Christmas is just around the corner, how are you gonna celebrate it? What about some Christmas log…read morecakes? @valeriepastry spreads its wings and makes some of the best log cakes in town, one of them is their Matcha log cake. Rolled in the matcha sponge cake, the matcha cream was extraordinarily good that we almost lick the plate! It was quite thick, rich, dense with a pronounced bitterness from the matcha, each slice of it gave a very intense kick of matcha. Flavoring was really nice but it would have been even better if the cream was lighter and more airy. Matcha flavor of the sponge was not as heavy as the cream. It was very moist that went almost a bit mushy, would have been better if it was softer, and more fluffier. Oh and have you noticed there were a chocolate ball on the top? There were also some matcha jello cubes inside! One cake is good, but two is even better! Other than matcha, Valérie also has their log cakes in chocolate. The Chocolate-All-In-One is perfect for chocolate lovers. Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate sponge cake, Chocolate brownie, Chocolate crisp, Chocolate crispy pearl, I'd call this chocolate overload. Valrhona chocolate mousse was dense, thick and a bit heavy. Good that it was neither too sweet nor sugary, making it a delightful dessert after the meal. It was also nice that there was a layer of passion fruit puree in between all those chocolates, balancing the sweetness. The sponge was kinda dry though, would have been better if it was moister and more airy. We like how there was layer of chocolate crisp in the cake, giving some crunchiness to the cake and making it more scrumptious!

I have to say that the last time I ordered from Pizza Box was when I was still studying at CUHK. As…read moresome of you may have known, I lived in the farthest hostel in the entire campus - International House. Going out for dinner and coming back can take quite a while and too much of a hassle. Therefore, my roommate and I often ordered from Pizza Box. Why Pizza Box but not Pizza H*t? First off, Pizza Box does not offer crazy choices, instead, they have my favorite - meat lovers; second, Pizza H*t does not deliver to secluded places like ours; third, it is much cheaper, and it has buy one get one free promotion. (Fun fact - I tried calling in Cantonese and the staff said they do not have that promotion; so try English if you want this - not sure if it still happens though) So around HKD$150 can get you 2 huge boxes of pizza in less than an hour. Where else can you find that? The delivery normally does not take too long and the food is super hot when they get served. The crust is crispy with melted cheese all covering the slices. You may try to order online but I prefer calling in person. Though I do not see myself a computer idiot, its online system fails me still - and I do not see the promotion online unfortunately. Therefore, give them a call, which is definitely much faster and more convenient. There are so many stores around Hong Kong and I can guarantee you they do delivery everywhere.

There is of course, the million dollar question of which is better: Pizza Hut or Pizza Box? Some would say Pizza Hut does a better all-round and that their pizzas are more interesting. Then you have the school of Pizza Box where the pizzas are done properly and to be honest nothing else much matters. For me- the Pizza is the main thing in the meal and I don't care if the pasta is a bit soggy and the soup tastes like PVA. You are ordering a pizza after all so that's what should be done properly. Pizza Box's menu has a traditional list of pizzas- nothing too fancy but enough to keep a pizza buff like me happy. I am not a fan of the pizza hut take on dumping every single known ingredient to mankind on the pizzas. The are 3 choices for the crust and I think that's the proper way of doing things- none of that nonsense with cheese and everything else. They deliver or you could choose to pick up a pizza from their shop; doing it the latter way would usually mean a 40% off or a concession to a similar degree. I always choose to go pick it up as its cheaper and quicker. Their service has always been top notch and I really cannot A Manhattan would do me quite well at this time- thank you very much.

In the past HK's licensing rules would allow "canteens" to serve specific companies/ buildings and this was rather prevalent in the Kwun Tong area. As Kwun Tong developed and shed its factory roots, many restaurants began serving outsiders and the variety changed from the usual sauce on a whole heap of rice to something a bit niche. Factory 99 would be impossible to find if you didn't know what you were looking for. They are not allowed to have a massive billboard and/or the usual signs showing that there's a restaurant inside; instead you go up a flight of stairs to the first floor where you will be greeted by a rather well decorated restaurant with a lot of US mock billboards from 1950s (you will know what I mean when you get there). The food itself changes everyday but the general offerings include baked rice of all sorts, burgers and steaks. You can say its trying to mimic a diner but I guess they are just trying to serve whatever they find to be popular. For the princely sum of 60 HKD you get a full set of soup (the usual red/white/ Chinese), the main course and a drink. The fact that its rather tasty is an absolute bonus; because in most cases expectations are rather low and I think this place has exceeded it by far. I wouldn't all the way for it, but if you are in the area then you should give it a try.
