There are only two words to describe The Meatery on Mosque Junction in the Mid Levels, "Oh, yeah!"…read more As the name would suggest, they sell meat and lots of it. But this isn't the stuff you get in Park n Shop which seems to come from questionable farms in China. This is the finest organic meats, primarily from Oz and NZ. In terms of the raw meats selection, The Meatery have meat cuts, as well as sausages and burgers, hand-made in store. They are also a full service carvery, deli and bakery, so as well as the best in raw meats, you can get cooked meals like pies, stews and kebabs, breads, and wines, beers and ciders. A few other nice touches include their gift card options (I suppose for the man who already has everything), their "meatmaster" loyalty programme, and also their delivery options via Cuisine Courier. It is a bit pricey, but you are paying for absolute quality, in both the meats, the meals, and the advice dispensed by the extremely knowledgable staff. The location is a little out of the way up on Mosque Junction, but this is definitely the perfect place to come if you are planning BBQ.

The quality is uncompromising however and the staff can recommend the best way to cook it up if you are unsure. They will even hand make you burgers if you like and the results are delicious. The Meatery also sell ready to go meals ranging from hearty beef bourguignon to shepherds pie - comfort food is most definitely their forte! The meals are great for grabbing on the way home on the escalator and are probably the closest you'll come to a home cooked meal from the Mid Levels/Soho takeaway world but, again, the food doesn't come cheap! Expect to pay from $119 up for a portion for one - only marginally cheaper than dining in a restaurant. If you can afford it after your meat purchase, the Meatery also stocks wine, beer and a couple of lovely ciders. The staff are friendly and the shop front is an adorable and colourful addition to Mosque Street. If it weren't for the prices, I'd buy my meat here every time Frustratingly, the opening hours seem dependent on staff vacations so don't bet on being able to pick up your Sunday roast that day - I've happily shopped at The Meatery one Sunday only to find the place in darkness the following week. .

Tired of the meals that you cook every day? Fancy a little westernized dining experience? This is…read moreprobably the place for you to go. Boneless fish fillet, both frozen and airtight packed, frozen cuts of beef to make a casserole or grill up a piece of steak; this hidden gem in the industrial district of San Po Kong has a great variety of ingredients for you to rustle up a decent gourmet meal~ You know how it is difficult to get a piece of decent meat to make dishes as simple as grill steak in supermarkets; this joint has different cuts of meat, both fresh and frozen available for you to choose from. Diced cubes of beef tenderloin for barbecue; ox tail for soup. A quick search in the meat section and you can come up with hundreds of dishes to make. Have troubles finding the appropriate sauce or dressing to go with your choice of meat? The condiment section provides ready-made sauces such as teriyaki, barbecue or even sesame sauce; so basically you can have your dinner sorted out simply by visiting this shop, all you have to is to grab some greens and you are good to go. Other than the land animals (beef, pork and mutton), Delifans has also a section selling selected seafood such as frozen abalone, scallops, lobsters and Alaska king crab; the scallops are good enough to eat straight! So basically this little shop caters to both meat and seafood lover all in one go; if you wanna have a decent home cooked meal over the weekends or a fast but special dinner in a busy weeknight, Delifans would be your friend

Our palates have long been spoilt for choice and lately there has been a movement to really up the ante and cook this stuff at home. With the introduction of small ovens, bread makers and so on- there are now more and more shops that cater to this niche but growing market of people wanting quality foodstuff without the restaurant prices. Delifans is exactly the type of shop that are springing up all over town. Its not a huge supermarket as such but a modest store that sells everything: steaks, lamb shanks, seafood such as fresh oyster, lobsters, scallops and a freezer than contains everything you would see at a Michelin 3 star. Apart from these fresh produce, they also sell the condiments, cooking seasoning and some other items that just aren't generally available here in Hong Kong. You will see, for example, a lot of hotpot specials during the winter seasons and specific brands of udon are sold here. The prices, naturally, will be dearer than those you see in supermarkets but then again the quality of products is also much better. I'd like to think that given its obscure location (in the middle of an industrial section of San Po Kong) that they have already kept their prices down given the cheaper rent. To save yourself a trek you don't have to come here in person- you can fax your order, order by phone or even order online. They will do a free delivery with purchases over 1000 HKD but trust me that's not hard here. So treat yourself better, afterall, you are what you eat.

If you love oysters, fresh food then you should not miss this place…read more Ocean Three paved the way in Hong Kong in offering fresh seafood and fine meats at a discounted price- I mean discounted in the sense that you could pick up coffin bay oysters at 14 HKD each; not cheap by some countries standards but dirt cheap by how much restaurants and hotels charge you. Its innovative in the sense that you cannot dine in, even the shop itself is rather rudimentary- set in an industrial building you will not find it by just walking around. It is literally a warehouse location with a huge fridge and you just go there to pick up your orders. Apart from oysters, they offer sea urchin (a delicacy in these parts), prawns, scallops, crabs. Meat wise they offer fine angus beef steaks and lamb shanks. They do offer more but their menu is just too long to describe here; what I could say is that their prices are almost unbeatable though there are some new competition popping up around town in trying to share this growing market. The drawbacks of this place? well its not easy to find, if you don't drive then it is a bit of a trek to come pick things up, you have to shuck oysters yourself (NOT an easy task for the uninitiated) and more importantly; you have to order at least 2 days before so you have to plan ahead if you want to buy from them. I would say this though: for the price you pay and the quality they give you- its alright to plan ahead because they never let you down.

Order off the menu or walk to the butcher across the restaurant. There, select your meat, temperature, side, sauce. Provide a table number. My filet was among the best I've ever had. My companion's lamb burger was perfect. The wine selection is good and whoever put together the list selected some good options All that said, there was nobody to greet us at the door and empty tables had reserved placards. We looked lost and awkward and eventually asked to see a menu and for an explanation. That person then vanished. A possibly Persian man returned and asked if we wanted a table but then told us there was nowhere in the restaurant. There is no list -- or so we were told. Then the original person returned and without explanation we had a table. Why? Had he racially profiled us? Was he just rude? I have no idea, but he consistently gave the most cursory and minimal responses throughout the night. The Persian(?) took our menu order but when asked about the butcher just motioned across the restaurant and said "go ahead." He didn't provide a table number so -- yet again -- another waiter had to be asked. Service was slow and encounters with waitstaff were sporadic, at best. The guy next to us received a 10% discount without even asking because his service was so delayed. All staff speak perfect English. Prices are moderate for Hong Kong but reasonable for ROW (rest of world).

If you do not like nuts and peanuts in particular, or have nut allergies even by looking at this…read morestuff, then please avert your eyes and go look at sushi, ramen, sliders, buns, macarons, and froyo pictures instead! 其奧 (Kei O) came highly recommended to me by a friend residing in the USA who grew up in Yuen Long (New Territories, Hong Kong). Fortunately this was not too hard to find after spending some time walking from Yuen Long train station and wandering around. It was on a fairly busy section of a street closed to car traffic, where it can be considered as a short mini night market like strip. One look and you can tell this is a very old traditional business with a niche offering (and of course targeting a niche audience). Lots of very old school Cantonese classic dessert/snacks that are not sugared up the yin yang like a deep fried bacon beignet. They offer several samples, and I had the pleasure of trying several varieties, of which I instantly became a fan. Their signature peanut candy, is significantly tastier than the peanut brittle candy (e.g. See's Candies). Perhaps it is a result of using the Asian variety of peanut (likely by way of Indonesia) or a particular variety that has a more intense flavor than the ones grown in America (usually larger, less flavor even if you roast them). There is a nut candy plastered with black sesame seeds, that one is also quite a winner. The most interesting one has to be the candy made primarily with pumpkin seeds. It is hard to describe the texture but is unique in that I have never seen it before. It was an even a bigger pleasure to be able to see one of the employees taking a huge batch that was cooked, and laid out in one big giant goopy ball, and he was trying frantically to stir the mixture. My guess is that the next step, it has to be roasted, cooled then carefully divided up (and formed into bite sized cubes). Hard to beat fresh, hand made good chit. Labor intensive, but not expensive at all. There are no preservatives in the candies, so they will last at most two months according to the staff. Perfect gifts for families locally, or even abroad. Please keep supporting these traditional local businesses. If we do not do our part to keep them alive, they will start dropping like flies, and all we will be left with are high priced fusion or western trendy restaurants and bling shops. Don't keep chasing the next food trend, understand and appreciate food culture and history. And hopefully everything will not be lost.
