Thankfully, after two visits (last one being in January), I found my way back to 低調 without Google maps. Good to know that it's location is permanently tattooed on my mind. Plus, back then, they didn't even have an English name. Master Low-key for the win! (and they have an English sign too!)
I couldn't contain my excitement when we turned into Keng Shan Lane. But with busy construction on one side and the lack of its signature line ahead, I freaked out and thought it was closed. I had forgotten it was a public holiday. "Nooo...we came all the way here!" I shouted out in despair. But I needed to see for myself. Upon closer arrival, it was thankfully open. Phew! *sigh of relief* There was a small crowd of people waiting in front, holding their receipts, which had numbers on it. As someone mentioned earlier, they upgraded to having a TV display list orders when they're ready. Excellent process flow! In the past, you had to stand in line, and after placing your order at the cashier, still wait in line for the finished goods. Past is history, and the present is a gift --- a gift from the egg waffle gods because this stuff is AMAZING. Gafawww. It is so so SO good.
Updated prices: HK$16 for one, HK$30 for two (you can mix and match)
When our order was ready, they kindly placed it in a bag to-go --- the gaak zai beng first at the bottom, followed by the gai dan zai. The GDZ we immediately took out and started eating, while it was still fresh and hot! My friend made a good point: it was very crispy (as I previously mentioned), but also very airy and not very pancake-y. After taking one bite, I also agreed. Another reason why my mom does not get the hype about GDZ. "Why would you pay to chew air?!" she would say to me whenever I was craving GDZ. So if you're looking for that pancake-y dense GDZ, I would recommend Mammy's Pancake instead.
After we demolished the GDZ, we took out the gaak zai beng (GZB), which was still very warm. And because it was left alone for about 5 mins in the bag, all the peanut butter sauce and condensed milk gooeyness was just absorbed by this egg waffle. One bite in and I just melted. My friends were rendered speechless. Total silence and the occasional "Mmm..." You know it's good when everyone's so focused on eating. (Insert Emma Stone's "This is the best!" GIF)
This place is such a gem! For now, at least... Because the gaak zai beng (格仔餅) is no joke and I can't stop raving about it. It won't be "low-key" anymore. Last month, a friend of mine visiting from California trekked out to SKW by himself (because I couldn't show him around HK that day) and tried the GZB and said it was super delicious.
