I've worked both in emergency ambulance services, as well as the hospital side of things. I'm giving this a 3-star review for lack of a better opinion. I come to HK multiple times a year for business and this time I happened to get sick with a lung infection, and suddenly in the middle of the night I lost my ability to speak and started coughing vehemently. Looked up emergency services and this was one of the closest. It's a huge hospital and the facilities are pretty clean. But the emergency department nurse told me there's a wait time of AT LEAST 8 hours. That's really the longest I've seen someone have to wait. I understand an emergency department needs to triage, and yes, of course there were cases that were more critical than me. But I also expect a public hospital to be staffed well enough to not have patients waiting for over an hour or two. The nurse suggested that I try a private hospital, which I did, not wanting to wait (at least) 8 hours and miss my next day's business meetings. So I took her advise, and waited about 10 minutes at a private hospital close by, got examined for less than 5 minutes from the on-duty physician, and was on my way out of there with medicine in hand (antibiotics, cough medicine, and masks to avoid getting others sick) in under 1hr. I'm sure having a couple additional on-duty physicians to take care of cases that are quick and simple will go a long way to quickly solve this issue.

You can tell that they're a very structured organization and everyone working here are well trained. Doctors and nurses are professional and polite. The nurses I have dealt with are so nice I actually wrote them a card to say thank you. The hospital took the past few years to revamp the entire place and I could see them upgrading section by section, and I like this place more and more. I'd like to make a special mention of the food there - the canteen has really good food, with a nice casual setting overlooking the race course. Clay pot rice is really famous but there's a wait for it. Not that I want to come here all the time, but if anyone reading this is concerned about the quality of doc or the place, there's nothing for you to worry about. If you have a good medical insurance, just go for it!

Got antibiotics and pain Med with instructions to return the next day. Had to pay my bill. I returned the next day and had to be admitted due to finger not any better. I was seen by an orthopedic surgeon . He did surgery that same day! I had to stay two nights for IV antibiotics! Great vegetarian meals! I was released And had to pay my bill. I continued taking oral antibiotics and pain Med with instructions to clean and change dressing daily. Went back for a follow up and my finger was healing! Dr Lam and hospital staff are caring, friendly and wonderful. Good skilled nurses. I was in a three bed room and I think it's wonderful that they let significant others stay with their loved ones through the night.

A personal experience recently has further confirmed this. Delivering a baby is stressful business, being a first time parent further adds to the anxiety with so many questions clouding your mind as to what you are doing right (usually none) and what you are doing wrong (everything). Booking your wife into the hospital is more akin to booking yourself in for an unknown experience; what will happen, when will it happen and how much will it cost- these are all the things that you really don't know. St Teresa's really took concerns off my mind in a couple of ways- staff members were friendly and they were always supportive right from the word go to when I left. At no point in time did I feel that I was left to fend for myself and nurses were always on hand if we needed anything (with the exception on one nurse in the new born viewing room who felt the need to tell everyone off for calling their new born child too often). Doctors (not necessarily associated with the hospital but nonetheless) were also friendly with us and they, having done thousands of deliveries, knew what we were concerned about. The wards were clean and airy and the preparation courses for new parents were all very helpful and informative. This was all further enhanced when the bill came and it was pretty clear how everything came to the amount and all was as expected. I don't know how other hospitals fare but given my only experience so far I would say this is pretty good by my standards. Two things though: Don't park for too long at the hospital- it will cost ya. And don't buy anything from the shop downstairs unless you have to because its a rip-off.

I won't go into detail but you're welcome to Google it for those history fanatics. Basically, 'ol Matilda has been around since 1907... Dang! She isn't old...she's beyond ancient but with a lot of "cosmetic surgery" ehh, sorry renovations! She's looking spiffy! Yes this hospital, a private one, is one of the nicest hospitals I've EVER been to! Not that I'm a collector of hospitals, in my former life, I had done some clinical rotations, worked in one, and not to forget being the almighty patient! Now that hubby and I have been here 3x in the last few months, I still do not mind coming here. Why? Because it's like you're going to a luxury hotel! The staff is superb. Smartly dressed in dark coordinating uniforms, it's seriously like the four seasons. They will escort you to the proper floor, acknowledge you immediately upon waking in, call for cabs, all at the front desk. Heck, even offer you coffee or tea will you wait! Overall, the hospital looks much smaller than it appears but everything in HK is built upward. It's only 5 Floors and the inside is much smaller than a normal US hospital but I think being that it's private, it is top notch and staff gives excellent care because it's small (and let's not sugar coat it...well funded of course.. lol) Inpatient or Outpatient, everything has been very efficient here. The staff( nurse, doc, aides) are all English speaking. Some even have a British accent! And everyone speaks to you like a human being! You're not just a number! (An exception with a few of the nurses who are a little short in Kong-lish, but mean no harm, it's all in efficiency!) The hospital is well updated with nice technology... iPads(food menu, reading material, etc) and flat screen tvs. The Food also has been pretty good too! If you're an Inpatient, you will receive a toiletry kit and slippers. As an outpatient, depending upon the procedure, a nice knit gown, and waffle weave robe! Highly impressive compared to the usual thin paper, freezing gowns! Now the only...Rough part...is...getting there! Why? Why? A hospital so far away?!? It's about a 20 minute cab ride up to the Peak from Central! (Less time on the way down, they usually drive faster!) The views are great once you arrive, just don't get car sick on your way (up or down) the roads very narrow and twisty like a slow rollercoaster! Yeehaw...

However, in Hong Kong, our private health care can in some cases allow us to choose which hospital to go to. If you manage to get in at the Matilda, you have done well (and I wish you a speedy recovery). The Matilda is right up on the Peak, which makes it a bit of a beast to get to, especially if you have nausea as the ride up there is winding. There is a mini buss, but I have only ever taken a taxi up and back, as it's hard to find the mini bus start point. However, being far away means that you really do feel like you have left HK and are in the Swiss Alps. This feeling of being out of the city alone should make you feel better! As you would hope, the staff at the hospital are very pleasant, and of course highly skilled. With their behaviour, and the general ambience of the hospital, it does feel a lot like a big hotel (just with doctors). I suspect this is what celebrity rehab is like? If you are are covered or can afford it, there are a number of private rooms, which I basically hotel rooms. There is room service, TVs, en suites, mini bar (not stocked!). The only give away is the hospital bed. On the subject of room service, the food at the Matilda is great. If you are a visiting guest and decide to save a few bucks and visit the staff canteen, it is awful local food. Really, the worst fish ball soup you can imagine. I would recommend you shell out for the patients menu and get a proper meal. Personally, I can't stand hospitals. I find them morbid places full of suffering and pain. Yes I get they are also places of healing, but what can I say, it's just how I feel. However, if you do have to have medical treatment, or have a loved on who does, I would recommend the Matilda. It does exude more warmth than most hospitals.

I didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the labor and delivery areas. My 3-day stay in the semi-private room (2 beds in one room) included a bathroom ensuite, but no television, unfortunately. The nurses were very attentive to me (especially during my labor- they cheered me on to push and get that baby out!) They also took great care of me in the 24 hours after I gave birth, when I was at my weakest. There were also nurses that stopped by and taught me breastfeeding basics. If you have a chance to work with Kristina (Christina? sp?) you'll be lucky- she's very patient, gentle, and has a good sense of humor. There are one or two nurses who are a bit brusque and not as nurturing, but I'm thinking that's typical of any hospital in Hong Kong. Food-wise, there's nothing to shout out about; just typical bland hospital food. They'll give you a form to fill out in the morning that will allow you to choose breakfast, lunch, tea time, and dinner for the next day. You get a choice of Chinese or western options, and the menu is different every day. My favourite dishes turned out to be their lasagna and the minced pork with eggplant. Overall, great experience at this hospital; would recommend if you're looking for a private hospital to deliver that's close to Central and Midlevels.

Unfortunately for me, I have been suffering from back/shoulder pain for a couple of days and I thought it was time to get myself down to a doctor. Canossa has a 24 hour out-patient department. It was super. The nurses very friendly, the doctor spoke perfect English. We bantered and joked about how I looked like an old lady as I tried to stand. Then the best bit. They gave me drugs. Like actual drugs that stopped my shoulder from hurting - well maybe that was the injection of muscle relaxant (which may I say, I did not feel, and I am such a wuss when it comes to injections). I highly rate Canossa out patient department. I walked in off the street, registered and was seen within 20 minutes. The plus side, seeing the doctor was under $400!

I've had two recent visits to the Tai Wai Union Hospital lately. The first was inpatient care - my…read moresister gave birth to a healthy, baby boy! The second was outpatient care with a general practitioner. Long post but hopefully helpful to all those Yelper mamas-to-be! Union is one of the cheaper private hospitals in Hong Kong, Australian accredited, and there is a very convenient online price list that you can refer to. My sister did the package deal for a natural birth, but noticed that if you opt for a private room, the doctor's fee also goes up. This doesn't really make much sense to me, but it applies to most other hospitals. For inpatient care, the private room provided for my sister was spacious (despite being the smallest choice, it comfortably fit around 10 of her friends and family). The toilet had a shower with amenities from Kiehl's Natural Skin Care collection. Another good point about Union is that they deal with the placenta and cord blood collection very well. Our doula informed us that this wasn't always the case in other hospitals. Union hospital was very professional about this and took care of my sister's placenta until the doula could take it the following day. As for the labour, there were a few issues: the first is that the maternity ward on the 3rd floor is very bureaucratic, so my sister had to undergo her contractions in another room with 6 other women in labour while she waited for her file to be sorted out. She was also not allowed to walk around, stand up, or sit on the exercise ball we had brought along - which she felt made her contractions worse. When she was given the epidural, she was put in her own room which meant she could finally rest. When the baby was born, the nursing staff on the 11th floor (private rooms) were very good with after-care, providing us with some baby goodies and teaching us how to swaddle, hold the baby, feed etc. The only incident was when they told us that the baby was not allowed to stay in the private room on the first night unless there was a mid-wife from an agency present. The outpatient care/ER procedure at Union is similar to other hospitals: sign-up with your ID card, fill out a quick form with your address and next of kin. You are swiftly transported to the triage section, where they take your temperature, blood pressure, and ask what the problem is. Your ticket is put in one of three bands, depending on the urgency of your medical issue. My issue wasn't very urgent - I had sebborheic dermatitis that had spread from my scalp to my face and ears, horribly irritating but not life-threatening. So I waited for about 4 hours before I managed to see a GP. He spoke English well, and a nurse was present to help observe the physical symptoms. He answered all my questions, and didn't prescribe anything that wasn't necessary. Some clinics just overload you with antibiotics and pills that sometimes end up making you worse off than before! If you can, though, I would suggest just getting the prescribed medicines elsewhere, as the internal pharmacy is more expensive.
