In addition to other guests, there was a group of 12 guys who were on a bachelor party. I'm mentioning this because they were very disruptive but that's not Jürgen's fault and he did his best with the situation. There is a brewing room that you walk through with explanations of the different stages of the beer brewing process. In the back is a tasting room and most of the tour took place there. We all sat around a table while the guide poured and explained the beers. There appears to be a slideshow and we looked at some of the slides that identified the three beers we tried but I think because the slides were in German, we didn't see the full presentation. The tour was a nice diversion and although I have been on many brewery tours, I still learned something from this one, particularly about German beer. After the tour, your hand stamp gets you a discount in the gift shop.

Whenever I visit places that claim to be specialists I like to be guided in my choice. This part can really make or break an experience. If not guided with professionalism and entusiasm I might as well go somewhere else. In Alles Elbe the entusiasm is contageous and the love of beer is undenieable. Even the tapas-like dishes were presented with a love for quality and taste - made us want to taste everything. And so we did. The smoked ham was more than delish, so was the 'syltz', but after all we came for the beer... The two beers I had were great. I especially enjoyed the Brewcifer 'Rhubarb wire', a saison beer with rhubarb and basil. Eminent taste and such personality. So tell the host or hostess what kind you like and be bold when guided - you might strike gold! Remember that tap beer can be tasted before decision is made. Lo and behold 16 is the age of consent when it comes to beer in Germany so we were looking for a place that had locally brewed (ie: authentic German) beer as well as a good menu so we could get him the requisite birthday dessert. We arrived a little after nine...it's a cavernous place with lots of places to sit inside and outside, and with no attention from anyone who worked there (with very few people in the restaurant) we found a couple of menus and a place to sit. The server came by and took away those menus and gave us a drinks-only menu as, apparently, they don't serve food after 9 (including desserts). Bummer to find this out as their website only listed their opening hours and didn't give any indication that we couldn't get anything we wanted if it was later in those hours. Okay, so we decided we'd have our beer and go somewhere else for dessert. I wanted to get the beer flight/sampler so my kid's first beer experience could be as rich as possible. They list a beer flight on their website menu, but for some reason, after 9pm, they no longer offer that. Okay, so no food, or dessert, and just beer...but what happened to the flight-sized glasses after 9pm? Are they hidden away with the food? Does the chef take them home? What reason can't they do a flight when they're only serving beer? Our server seemed especially annoyed that we were even in the restaurant at all. So in the end, although I enjoyed the 2 beers we got (Original 1909 Astra Urtyp [a basic ale]) and the "Night Shift" dark beer [nice and chocolatey] - we left feeling disappointed, unwelcome, and wishing we had chosen somewhere else to go have our son's first beer on his birthday.

The food is traditional German, hearty and satisfying. You can go for a full platter or build your own with à la carte plate with sides and mains. As my pic shows, I went with the homestyle meatloaf, bacon potato salad, and sauerkraut, and honestly? No notes. The potato salad in particular was amazing--savory, slightly tangy, with real texture and smoky bacon goodness. Gröninger feels like a dungeon-meets-microbrewery as reviewer Keith H. said, and that's not just a vibe; it's literal. You're in the actual basement where the beer is brewed, and the low lighting and stone archways give it a cool, cave-like atmosphere. Totally agree with other reviewers that it's got character for days. Service is different than you might expect if you're not used to German customs. Wave for attention rather than waiting for a server to drop by, and just walk up to the host stand to pay. The one downside on my visit was that I came alone and got seated in the front spillover section, even though there were open seats inside the main room. The host said they were reserved, but I later saw bigger groups walk in and get those spots. So: come early, come with friends, or be prepared to hang in the front area, which is still charming. You get a great view of the whole space if you need to head to the bathroom. Overall: tasty beer, solid food, very atmospheric, and worth a stop whether you're here for a drink or a full meal. I'd absolutely come back. // Beginnen wir mit dem Bier. Ausgezeichnet.

The bottom two floors are full service dining, while the terrace is more relaxed with servers that mill about. All have great views of the river, and for my visit I enjoyed the sun up on the terrace. I arrived around 3pm on a Sunday, looking for a late lunch after walking and sightseeing all morning. A polite man pointed me upstairs when I said I wanted to sit outside, and found that you seat yourself up there when I arrived. They have English versions of the menu available with a QR code, and free wifi so no worries about roaming data when trying to decide what you want to eat. Also, plenty of the staff speak English, so for tourist that might ease your worries. I had their seasonal beer, which was a light wheat for the summer. It was the small size, and plenty for me as beer isn't always my go-to drink. My meal consisted of the fried fish (local white fish) with cucumber potato salad. Everything was fresh, tasty, and my favorite part was that salad. It was so different than my normal "American" potato salad and I loved it. My only complaint would be that their prices are on the high side. There's plenty of other places with cheaper options and probably larger plates. But for the atmosphere, I'd say it was worth it. It's a great establishment, with great homemade beer (their vats are right in the dining room), and very close to many tourist areas. I highly recommend a visit!

When I went there last night, people were cool and laid back. No oom-pah band and locked arms, swaying, and singing (I'm being TOTALLY facetious here). Staff are hip too. About 45 people were in a group at tables getting a beer lecture/tasting. The hipness, the group tasting - - this illustrates the state of the craft beer movement in Germany today, and the beers reflect that as well: the beers are almost satisfying, almost good expressions of each style, almost worth drinking. I'm sure the 45 people getting the beer lecture/tasting found them curious, if not intriguing. (Reminds me of the state of the craft beer movement in the U.S. 15 or 20 years ago.) I've had a few of the Hopper before, but they are not something I buy to drink at my home in Hamburg. For someone from the States, who is used to picking up plenty GREAT expressions of the different styles they make, which you can get in many shades of excellence in the U.S., it's not worth committing 12 ounces of palate time and belly space to what are, basically, nice attempts. At the brewpub I had the "Salonsozialist" weizenbock - - it was almost worthwhile, but lacking when compared to such immaculate standards here as the Weihenstephaner Vitus, or Schneider Aventinus. It isn't worth the trek out here to have something not in the same league. And, overall, unless German craft brewers can start producing really stellar beers, and not just 'almosts', and flawed expressions, hip though it may be, the craft brew movement in Germany will be on shaky footing.
