Given that I have an endoscopy at Christmas time to evaluate whether or not I am going to be able to get gluten free food on prescription, I need to eat from gluten from now until then. Despite being apprehensive about all the tummy troubles I may encounter, I have to admit that I am also looking forward to eat a few of my old favourites, and try some of the local cuisine which would have previously been off limits. So, first thing I eat with gluten turns out to be a croissant. The second thing-cookies. I was walking through Grenoble, tired and low on sugar, when I spotted this cute little shop which specialises in cookies, but also sells a few scones and brownies. I really love places which specialise in a certain product, it usually means that the quality is very good. So I went in, felt a little overwhelmed by the choice of cookies available, and eventually settled for: One dark chocolate and ginger, one white chocolate and citron, one salted caramel. The cookies are disappointingly small if you consider the price, each little mouthful costing 1.10 euros. That's the kind of money I would expect to pay for a refined little macaroon with pistachio cream, not a rustic cookie. Nevertheless, I bought it. Surely it's worth a try? I bought the cookies home, had the white chocolate as an afternoon snack, the other two as a pudding after dinner... I must say, I was disappointed by the stodgy consistency, lack of chocolate and mild flavour. I expected a real bite in the dark chocolate and ginger, but it was surprisingly dry and quite lacking. The white chocolate tasted strongly of citron, but I couldn't taste the white chocolate. The salted caramel was quite nice, still stodgy, but okay really. Not worth the price though. I doubt I will be returning to Adélaide cookies, not when there are so many other lovely places in town which serve up gourmet patisseries, cookies which are loaded with chocolate and satisfying crepes. If you want the best cookies in the world, I would recommend going elsewhere...

There is a place to taste tea towards the back of the shop, and the oak table and rustic chairs give the sensation that one is going "back to their roots". I started to look down the tea menu, and was overwhelmed. There were prodominantly teas from China and Japan, black, white and green teas at the centre stage. You pay for the tea in grams, and the the price per 100g is displayed to the right of each tea. Some of the teas were almost as expensive as gold, at up to 110 euros. Though tea purists will find some very good and rare tea varieties here, day-to-day teas like earl grey can be purchased for 4.90 euros per 100g. The likelihood is though that it will be the best earl grey available. After much consideration I went for a 50g serving of Chinese Sencha Shokai and a 25g serving of Genmaicha 1. Though I haven't yet tried Genmaicha 1, the fragrance which leaked from the box was sweet and refined. I have been drinking a small cup of the Sencha at breakfast for the last few days, and it has been a pleasure to drink: not in the slightest bit bitter, a clear light green colour, transparent, an implaceable sweetness and delicateness. I will be back to sample more green and white teas, and perhaps the "tchai".

What a fantastic find!…read more I was starting to think that Grenoble was awful for sushi options after a trip to ayako at Caserme de Bonne, where food was expensive and of poor quality. Ozenya is a non-assuming little place which could easily be overlooked when working around the centre. Not noticing this little Japanese deli/café would be very sad though... You first enter a little shop which sells everything from matcha chocolate and pocky to ramen noodles and take away bento boxes. You go through into a little cute room and find yourself in a cosy little room with Japanese books and tables with flowery table cloths. The waitress was bright, bubbly and incredibly beautiful. I spoke to her after, and it turns out that she speaks Italian, French, English and Japanese (mother tongue), so is also a real polyglot. She handed me and my Japanese friend some menus, telling us that the 8 euro plat du jour was a noodle dish. There were limited choices, which personally I think is usually a good thing as it means that products are made lovingly and with fresh ingredients. There were two onigari options, one with salmon and the other with konbu. There were a few varieties of sushi, including inari (sweet deep fried tofu) pouches which are vegetarian. Then there were some side dishes like miso soup, steamed rice and wakame salad. There were also plenty of teas on offer. Being two students on a budget, we both went for the inari sushi (3.50 euros) and the wakame salad (3.50 euros), and asked for some tap water. We got two quite big inari on each little plate and a good amount of salad. The salad was very tasty and seasoned well with sesame seeds and oil. The inari was excellent, very fresh and the rice was very fresh and tasty. The presentation was perfect and everything on my plate looked very good. Everything also tasted good. If I had had more money I would have happily gone for one of the specialty Japanese sweets, they looked divine. I will be back for tea, cakes, and that Japanese veggie curry dish of the day which the waitress mentioned they sometimes make!
