After spending a day in Nuremberg, Bamberg was a breath of fresh air, and this restaurant was the pinnacle of that! Compared to the touristy places in Nuremberg, Zum Sternla far exceeds them. Upon walking in, the host couldn't speak English, which was the first sign we had found a good place. We got schnitzel which was pretty good, not the best, and their famous smoked beer which was very good! The waiters that could speak English were very helpful in navigating the menu. There is indoor seating, but the weather was nice so we ate outside on their very comfortable patio.

Awesome Rauchbier, loved the freedom of being able to hang outside drinking our street bier, what an awesome setting! Live Bamberg!

This is the oldest restaurant in Bamberg and dates back to 1380! A great place for authentic Bavarian and Franken food. I recommend the Schweinencrustenbaten - Belly of pork with crackling served with a Knodel (dumpling) and the best Sauerkraut I have ever had! Wash it down with a large glass of 'Keller Beer' or Dunkeles! Service is a bit slow and some of the dishes were off the menu by the time we arrived. This suggests that the chef does not quite have a handle on the numbers he can expect and how many ingredients he should get in each day. It is very reasonable in price with a nice Beer Garden at the rear. A nice place to while away a few hours drinking good beer and eating authentic no frills German Food. Full of flavor and calories! Did I mention the Sauerkraut is the best I have ever tasted!? Even better than my own efforts to make this dish. Don't bother with the cheese board on the menu. We were expecting a selection of local cheeses and all we got was some dodgy looking Camembert, Emmental and Cream Cheese from the supermarket up the road. Try the Bratwurst! Excellent!!

We had drinks here late at night - there is a cute little courtyard patio outside here.

While wandering the old town and it's very nice market (and enjoying abundent gluewhein mit flaming rum) we settled down for a nice lunch at Schlenkerla. Great choice! First, the smoked beer. Not my favorite, but hey, when in Bamberg ya gotta try it. The menu was not extensive but that's not a negative. I think too many restaurants offer too many choices with too little quality. Not a problem here. My friends ordered gulasche soup; a baked potato with salad combination plate (with two "small" baked potatoes drenched with what appeared to be fifteen pounds of butter); very tasty sausage with very, very tasty sauerkraut; and what I ordered: Bamberg style stuffed onion with mashed potatoes. I thought I was being virtuous. I must rethink my definition. The two very large onions were stuffed with a pork/bacon/bread/herb mix then roasted. Delicate taste that paired beautifully with mashed potatoes and smoked beer/beef stock sauce. Wunderbar! Look, I'm not a fan of tourist traps. Schlenkerla is certainly well-promoted to all of the tour operators, but most of the diners were obviously local. The menu was the same for all, as was the service. Excellent choice, and highly recommended.

We arrived with a 7pm reservation, no reservation no way to get a table, and there was a Stammtisch with local men at our table. They waved us over, and as a few had already left their group, there were 3 empty chairs, so we sat down and started chatting with them. They were a group of friends collected over the years from school, work and community. We three ordered our drinks and dinner and had a pleasant chat with the two who remained. They ordered another round and sat with us. Germany is one of those places where you are very likely to share a table with total strangers, but other than a polite " Guten Appetit", usually no conversations occur. Here we had a pleasant chat with two complete strangers about Bamberg, beer, beer gardens, Keesmann, toasting etiquette, tourists, locals, and life. At the end of our delicious meal, we ended up setting up a city tour with one of them who offered to show us the area from a local perspective. I ordered the Hirschgulasch, Elk goulash, with red cabbage and a potato ball. The goulash had cranberries in it and was sweet but not too sweet. However much I thot the red cabbage was good, it was a huge heavy meal, so I couldn't eat much of the cabbage or any of the potato ball. However, I loved the goulash and the cabbage was also warm and delicious. I had a .25liter glass of their dark beer, Sternla, and that was the perfect size. Great taste, not too heavy. My spouse had their Schweinekotelett which was humongous and fried and breaded, which he liked, but it looked like a heart attack about to happen. Our friend had the same as I and liked it as well. In the end, our meals were great, the server was very friendly, and the two men were pleasant company. My spouse and I even got the promised local tour of the surrounding Bamberg county with two small local breweries where he knew the people and the beer was good.
