Beer culture is deeply entrenched in Germany, complete with a 500-year old beer purity law,…read moreReinheitsgebot, that strictly limits a beer's composition to only water, barley, and hops, beer's most basic ingredients. Its continuing legacy manifests as an astonishing German loyalty to their own beers, the scarcity of foreign beers, and the long shadow it casts on any domestic craft brewing. Still, if you look, microbrews exist and Tap House is a great place to find some. Modeled after American craft beer pubs, it captures the style in a dark wood look, with an impressively long bar alongside a row of bar-high tables with benches. The nearly two dozen taps heavily feature Camba Bavaria beers, a prolific domestic craft brewer that not only experiments with innovative and decidedly un-German styles, but also brews classic German styles consistent with Reinheitsgebot. Other taps and the extensive bottle list feature European microbrews, offering a wide range of styles, including sours. There's a good Belgian classics section, and a few Mikkeller's from neighboring Denmark. All served in appropriate glassware. Food and snacks are basic and unremarkable. The "tapas" platter is a bread/pretzel basket and six jars of accompaniments: prosciutto, pepperoni, slaw, diced tomatoes/onions, and two dips. Pizza was light, essentially thin flatbread. Peanuts, in a generous portion, came in a paper cone. Chips are a bag of chips, balsamic vinegar-flavored. Well worth visiting for a break from classic German beer styles to try some German microbrews, but aside from a snack, plan on eating elsewhere.

Hofbrauhaus is iconic, and overwhelming. Depending on the…read moretime of the day you go, and the size of your group, you will have different experience. Afterall, this is a beer hall, and it can get very busy, rowdy and loud. If that's the vibe you are looking for (I mean why else are you going here?) go with the right expectation. Basic Rules (purely based on my observations): - It's massive and tables are for sharing. Walk in and find yourself a seat. Be polite and ask the guests... the servers are not going to find seats for you. - Go through the menu, and figure out what you want. Be decisive and don't "hmm and haw" when the server is ready to take your order. Use google if you are not sure what a dish is. Of course you can ask the server, but don't be surprised if they are annoyed by too many questions during a busy time. Remember, language barriers can be frustrating for both guests and staff. - They do have Non-alcoholic beers, just make sure to specify. I was only in Munich for a couple days, and visited Hofbräuhaus twice (t was just the easier option in my case). First time: Walked in soon after opening on a Friday because I wanted to try Weisswurst (which is only served before 2pm). Place was nearly empty, so I found a whole table to myself (had others share the table after). Service was on the slower side, but I was able to order pretty quickly. It didn't take too long for the food to arrive. The place started to fill up slowly and the band started playing and it was a cool space. Second time: As I had more family join me and wanted to experience a classic Beerhall, so we went on Saturday around 1 pm with a group of 6. It was completely packed, and very loud. We found a table pretty quickly as people were leaving. It did take a while for the server to come to our table and took a while for the food to arrive. We shared and tried a bunch of dishes and everything was quite good and interesting. Disclaimer: I am not an expert on authentic Bavarian food, so I am not here to comment on that. Simply put - as first time visitors, we enjoyed our meal. Couple other things: Prices were quite reasonable. Although it's pure chaos, it's a fun environment. Staff members can be direct, and the tone may not translate well... which may be a bit frustrating for foreign visitors.

The ambience was cool, with tons of seating and I liked the polka band and the beer was pretty good, just the service was super terrible. My friend warned me of this, but I couldn't believe it was that bad. It was.

People are cool, just beware when sitting at the bar, sometimes the patrons take too much advantage of the all day happy hour Monday for €5.40 a cocktail . And the open buffet. Twice a Day Monday. In that case being the best relative to other options I would give them full marks. That said, in comparing it to traditional North American style Tex Mex it wasn't my favourite meal that I've ever had. Atmosphere and ambiance wise it was definitely a cool place to be, and very popular with the locals. The inside packs up early (especially as the weather gets colder) so arrive early or make reservations (if you can). The patio is huge and covered, it had heaters but they were turned off so we had to resort to using the complimentary blankets provided on the patio to keep warm. For my meal, I went with a Burrito and it was underwhelming overall. The flavours in by bad tex mex standards were really off. Hard to put my finger on it but it wasn't what I would have expected. To give you an example, I've never had zucchini in any Mexican food ever and low and behold one of the stir-fried veggies I found in my burrito (in abundance) was zucchini. It really ruined the flavour of the whole thing for me. Cool spot, good for what it was but next time I'm in Muncich I think I'll stick with traditional Bavarian Fare. Eatcrest Out

We walked in at 7pm on a Tuesday night and even without reservations we were seated immediately. Our table had comfy pillows for our backs and we had plenty of room to store our coats and bags. I must also mention the bathrooms in this review, they are in the basement and have a unique jungle decoration with animal sounds like mooing piped in. My husband said the men's bathroom was also uniquely designed and had two urinals facing each other through a red heart. Now, back to the food, we ordered off the daily specials menu and were happy to see that one side was in German and the other side was in English. The regular menu also had English translations, and both of our servers spoke fluent English. We ordered the potato and vegetable stew and the potato dumplings with bacon and mountain cheese and salad. The portions were huge and between two people we could not finish those two items. The quality of food was delicious with amazing seasoning. The salad has a tasty tangy dressing and we highly enjoyed our meal. I would love to try more items on their menu, I highly recommend this restaurant.
