It looked like the reviews were good from both tourists and locals alike, so I figured we should check it out. My German half-brother-in-law and I both ordered the Schnitzel, and he actually said it was very well done and one of the best ones he's ever had, which I think says a lot!! My husband got the pork knuckle which was really just way too much food, but he enjoyed it thoroughly. The servers were very kind and helpful, and although we sat outside because the weather was nice and there was no air-conditioning indoors, I got to walk through the restaurant to access the salad bar and was surprised to see how nicely decorated it was inside. I definitely considered coming back for a second day in a row and definitely would have if we had stayed for longer!

There were five of us and we all got something different. We shared among the group and there were no disappointments. Great schnitzel, delicious currywurst, a very interesting and yummy German meatloaf and the best spaetzl I've ever had. We enjoyed it enough we went back the next night. Our waitresses were great! My tasty German soda did have a hidden message for me.

This was probably the worst restaurant experience I've had in Bremen. My husband and I came in…read morearound noon on a Thursday with our toddler, and helped ourselves to a table. The place was pretty much empty. There were 2 other occupied tables. After sitting for about 5 minutes and no one offering us a menu, my husband walked to the bartender to ask him for one, and he pointed to where he can get one himself. At this point we had a bad feeling, but we were hungry and had an appointment in an hour, so didn't have time to drive anywhere else. The waiter finally finds his way over to us, takes the order of a couple that was waiting even longer than us, then started walking away. My husband calls out to him to take our order, he apologizes and said he thought his colleague had our table. So, the prices are pretty outrageous... 25 Euro for Spargel and Schnitzel, 17 Euro for what turns out to be a mixed green salad with salty chicken pieces. So, the food comes and is totally flavorless, and I'm pretty sure they forgot to use dressing on my salad, so I asked for some. So, since the food was lousy we assumed that maybe this place is really more about dessert and coffee. We were determined to have something go right in that meal, so we ordered 2 delicious looking pieces of cake from their display window. We promptly received our cake while the dirty dishes and glasses were still on our table. The waiter never brought the coffees we ordered, so my husband again, had to go to the bartender to ask for them. He kindly made them and brought them to our table. While we were finishing our just OK tasting cakes, we saw the waiter bring a different table a piece of cake with a mountain of whipped cream. We didn't get any whipped cream. All in all, a nice looking restaurant, with terrible, overpriced food, an unprofessional wait staff who made us feel unwelcome, and I will never return.

The good news is, quality control is now ridiculously easy. The oxcheek ragout, the char, the herring buttermilk aspic were enjoyable. So, some excellent food is coming out. Anything on the plate was meant to be there. On that note, know your audience. The paper placemats with restaurant name printed, boiled beef amuse-bouche, and the popcorn added to the flank steak main are well and good for Bremen. But, in larger markets around the EU, it might get you stabbed, I mean, on the receiving end of some harsh language. I'll still go back. 2021 08 25. M0. G&M 15.

The service was very nice; our waiter was telling us about the dishes and making our visit pleasant in general with his attitude. The food: OMFG... The head chef has a way to put together unexpected details on the menu, for examples sweetbread and scallop, truffles with lobster tail and fish, and fois de gras in ravioli, and he/she pulls it of gallantly. We had the 5 dish gourmet menu with a few, very good wines from the list to it. There was often silence between me and my co-eater in order to fully enjoy the beautiful taste combinations. Very pleasant indeed.

My Bremen family (via husband) have been coming to this local speciality restaurant since the 90's…read more The setting is in an idyllic farm location outside of Bremen; Lilienthal, which clearly hasn't changed in years, if not decades. The menu is seasonal; if not 'Taglich' (daily). The Chef prides himself in cooking everything for all of his guests, for every meal. This particular occasion was a celebration that my Father-in-law arranged for his survival of a recent stroke. My usual preparation to a restaurant visit, old and new, is to read recent reviews. In previous visits to Zur Schleuse, I recall enjoying 'healthified' versions of the menu offerings. Perhaps this was a previous trend? Our respective selections (photos) attached, were much more heavy. In reading reviews, menu guests have experienced the same. I'm wondering if the Chef (or sous-Chef) can consider a 'healthified' menu; where the fish is prepared in simple cooking techniques (poached, grilled, roasted) without so much oil. Also, the menu seems inflexible to any dietary restrictions and allergies (please correct me otherwise). But the fish was clearly fresh and tasty. My husband ordered an extraordinary plum dessert that still remains on my palate. The rustic setting, homestyle atmosphere, welcoming service, made up for any of the above critique. It was (yet another) memorable family meal.
