The schnitzel with fries was always my favorite, and I seem to recall that it was reasonably priced. For gourmet food and upscale ambiance, you'd want to go elsewhere. But if you want some place that has sort of that neighborhood feel (although it's basically in downtown Mannheim), I can recommend Zentrale.

We went inside at around 7:15 pm on a Tuesday night and asked for a table and the lady said straight on my face "we don't have any tables and kitchen closes at 9". So, just FYI, if you ever wanted to give this restaurant a try do your damn reservation. I am a globetrotter and I understand reservations are preferred but when you travel it is impossible to do reservations unless it is a super fancy restaurant and you planned it way ahead of time. I do not normally get that attitude and restaurants are generally open to making space for new customers or tourists but not this one, anyways lesson learnt!!!
