Came for a friends birthday because she loves the frozen margs. The machine ended up being down. Kinda bummed but things happen. Ordered a round of drinks, and mine didn't come. Waited and waited and waited for the server, and almost ten minutes later saw him and asked about my drink ( mind you, we were one of 2 tables in the whole place). He apologizes and after almost another 10 min, my drink comes. Wanted a second drink so decided it would be easier to just go to the bar. The server saw me go to the bar to get my drink and didn't even question why his table was walking to the bar to get their own drinks. I ended up going twice. The bill comes, and i notice that on our check my drink is $7.50, but the two i ordered from the bar she charged me 12$. I walk to the bar with the check and asked her why she charged me different than the server and she responds " oh i don't know I'm new and probably pressed the wrong button" . That's it. Just a yea i overcharged you but it is what it is I'm new. I was blown away. My friend who was celebrating her birthday also received stone cold food and when it was brought to the servers attention, he said sorry , offered no way to fix it, and was not seen back at the table for a very long time, so she just ate cold food . Z'Tejas was once one of a few go-to restaurants that we could depend on for decent take out food. My wife is disabled and it is easier to bring the food home to her. Tonight I heard her place an order for our favorite foods there. She asked for her chicken to be cooked well done as it always had been in the past. She also told them that she wanted everything as stated on the menu which meant in addition to the chicken the following: the bun, lettuce, tomato, avocado, red onion and the mayo and fresca on the side in containers. When she opened the container there was no lettuce, no tomatoes or red onion. The chicken was tough and barely cooked it. It was tasteless according to her. The last few times I brought home bags with missing parts of meals or else we were over charged for our food. We learned that Z'Tejas was bought by another company which explains why service is so bad and the food is so different. I eat where ever my wife does and tonight she said she wished that she had read the Yelp feedback before ordering. This will now be the very last time we order from here. This is no longer the same place as your parents Z'Tejas. read more

It was my first time visiting Phoenix and I knew that before I left that I needed to see what the hype was about AZ Mexican food! I came here for lunch with a group of coworkers and it was the perfect place to come for a big group. They have a large menu, which includes a section with healthier items. We started with the corn bread, which was some of the best I've ever had. Great starter and would highly recommend. I had the hardest time picking my main meal, but I heard great reviews about the enchiladas. They were the perfect lunch size, but they were just alright. It's a fun place to come to so I would still probably come back but just for drinks and apps. read more

Went there last night - I loved meeting Robert the COO that comes to visit this location out of Texas. He is really working hard to ensure great customer service. The entrance way is lovely! Right as you walk in the host greets you. The food is good and the drinks were awesome. Guac & chips and the cornbread is delicious. We had burgers (sliders) that were so well seasoned bursting with multiple flavors which I was pleasantly surprised. I had no idea that they did brunch so I am looking forward to trying this out on Saturday. The servers, bartenders, and chefs are all so humble and appreciative. Love this place! read more

Been here twice food is good.The cat fish is delish. I would never order this so was glad my partner did. Ceveiche is one of the best. Chips are best I have ever had. I hate to write this because Z Tejas has always been one of my favorite restaurants. We stopped there early February with my brother and wife who were visiting. I was surprised to see the renovations which were very nice. We waited for several minutes to be seated, and even longer to be waited on. The menus were scaled down and didn't have my favorite salad or my husband's favorite Ancho Rubbed Pork Tenderloin. Also, he said the Chambord Margaritas were not as good. Once we got our food, it was good, but I had to apologize to my brother and wife for bringing them there. We will probably not go back. read more

This place has gone completely downhill. The spicy diablo shrimp was replaced with chicken because they had none. The fajitas don't come with sour cream;the steak was overcooked and tough. Our water glasses were never refilled. The remodeled inside reminded us of a cafeteria. The fist sign should have been that 80% of the tables were empty, at 6:30 on a Saturday. It's been a year or more since our last visit but a group of four of us dined her last week. The ambiance was ok, but less than desirable (the location has gone downhill in the last year). The service was good and friendly. The food was not very good. All four of us agreed the food quality was lacking. We actually spoke that it appears they must have new owners. Do not listen to anyone who doesn't rate Z Tejas 5 stars, I've never been more impressed with a chain restaurant. The food was phenomenal. Free cornbread and sweet butter!? What's not to love. Can't eat Mexican without free chips and salsa? Don't worry they have that too! My girl had a skinny marg x2 and I stuck with a Diet Pepsi because I was crushing cornbread. My fish tacos were cooked to perfection, her smothered burrito had incredible flavor and I must say the portions were right on as well. Not too much but left feeling full. The service is what really puts them over the top, our server was Derek, and he was spectacular. Very attentive and was genuinely happy to help and focused on us. The manager even came by and didn't just check on us but offered suggestions, and was happy to refill our drinks as well. Every one there was happy you came in and it came through in every aspect. Came here for a friend's birthday dinner. There were 12 of us and our waiter took great care of us in spite of the group size. We asked for separate checks and he didn't show any signs of an attitude at all. At the end, when our checks came some of us realized he had forgotten to charge us for our sodas. When we pointed it out to him, he brushed it off and said, "If it's not on the bill, it won't be there at all. Don't worry about it!" Now if only all our waiters can forget about charging us for alcoholic beverages... As for the food, my favorite was the free corn bread. Fresh from the oven, piping hot, sweet, with whole kernels of corn baked in and served in a mini baking pan. I could have eaten an entire pan of it and called it a night. In hindsight, that's what I should have done. The birthday girl suggested I try the Grilled Miso Salmon since she knows I LOVE seafood, adding that it was "pretty decent salmon considering we're in the middle of the desert." I'll also admit I'm not a big fan of Mexican food. Well, let's just say I'm sure there can be better salmon found in the middle of the desert than at Z'Tejas. The salmon was overcooked even though I asked for medium rare. The mashed potato cake on the side was just a lump of dry mashed potato that tasted like it was leftover and sitting in the fridge since last Thanksgiving. I went here yesterday for lunch. I had no idea what to expect from this place. We ordered the chips and salsa. I also ordered the smoked duck tacos. The server was nice and attentive to us. When we arrived, it was around 2pm so it was pretty empty. Since this is a mexican restaurant, I was expecting different items on the menu. Well, it is a chain so it seems more of Mexican fusion than real Mexican food. The chips and salsa came with three different types of salsa (one green one that had some avocado and two red ones [one was spicy and one was mild]). The salsa was good but nothing exceptionally. The chips were nicely crispy and they came in two colors. The cornbread is buttery and filling. It is soft and I can taste little bits of corn in it. It comes with a side of butter but I didn't add butter to it because I felt like it had enough flavor. The cornbread comes out hot and fresh. My smoked duck tacos were good. I like the side of slaw with it, it gave a fresh crisp to it. The marinade for the duck tacos were a little overpowering. They definitely did give a lot of duck sauce. The plating was nice, it was on a long rectangular plate. It was a little difficult to eat on such a skinny plate. The tortilla was nicely crisp and not too soft so it made it easier to eat. The sauce seems like a mayo-based sauce on top. It was good. I did wish they gave us more slaw on the side though. I like the duck meat although they had lots of sauce on it. OK...so it's been 5 years. I don't come here often, obviously! We had a company lunch on this occasion. The place was pretty full, and very loud. Surprising how loud. I ordered the steak burrito. When it arrived it wasn't very hot. Our orders were called in ahead of time, and we arrived punctually. There were probably 15 of us, and they had the orders ready almost instantly. Given the temperature I would say they cooked it well ahead. My burrito must have been sitting around for (I would guess) 30 minutes to get that not-warm. So how did it taste? The flavor was not bad. Pretty good, really. The rice that came with it was seasoned very well, I thought. But the steak in the burrito was a bit fatty and gristle-y. I expect better quality meat at Chipotle or Cafe Rio, and I certainly expect better here! All I can say is I'm glad I didn't pay the $13.50 for that burrito. Yes, that's how much the lunch menu steak burrito cost! If it was $7 I probably would bump to three stars. Flavor was good, and temperature would probably have been fine if it wasn't a pre-order for a large group. So I'll give them those. Well, at least the benefit of the doubt on the temperature. But the fat and gristle, plus the portion size (which was small) do not warrant a $13.50 price tag! At that price the value just isn't there for what you get. Service was good, especially considering the size of our group. If there ever is a next time I will have to try something completely different. For a burrito I could get one at Chipotle for $9 that is twice the size and almost as flavorful. read more

This restaurant is doing itself a huge dis-service by keeping the rude older male bartender on staff. I was sitting at the bar with my friend, and watching him interact with everyone. No eye contact, yelling across the bar to the sweet young server who brought a drink back. We didn't need to hear or see that? After asking for a recommendation on whether the chicken or beef is better on the tacos, without looking up, said " depends on who you ask" my friend said im asking you, nicely. Rudely he said I don't eat either, rudely, no eye contact. Then he asked what I was having, my response was "at this point I'm not ordering anything " as I was shocked at his complete lack of " give a damn" I couldn't wait to get out of there Upon running her credit card, which took way longer than it should have, he came back and said it was declined. She called her bank, and they said it was the error of swiping the card, instead of using the chip reader. Un needed embarrassment. Of course, after dropping off the bill, he was suddenly nice ( it was tip time!". Fyi, I've worked in the restaurant business myself for over 2 decades. Not acceptable. This southwestern themed restaurant has its appeals. So I expected Mexican food with an American twist. Most places that serve bread when your meal. But Z'Tejas goes above and beyound and delivers cornbread. I would have to say this is the best part of my meal. There are even corn pieces in the piping hot bread in the cute iron pan. It's fluffy and warm and the perfect way to start of the meal. I almost got full just by eating the cornbread before my food came out. I went during lunchtime and ordered the shrimp papaya enchiladas. Shrimp, papaya, celery, onion and spices are wrapped in soft corn tortillas. A black bean sauce covered the enchilada. The meal also came with a corn rice and salad. I barely tasted the papaya, but the shrimp turned out very well. It was soft, but not chewy. The black bean sauce was a bit dry and hardened the enchilada. There were vegetables added on top of the enchildas, but the bell peppers seemed too soggy and bland. I believe the additional vegetables were superfluous and didn't add to the value of the dish. The salad was not special, but adding corn to the rice was a unique way to serve it. It blended well with the cornbread that was served throughout the meal. They do have a variety of food selections on the Happy Hour menu. I think I'll go back and try some of the other dishes. And mainly I would go back just for the cornbread alone. :-) Overall, the food is average, what I typically expect from a chain restaurant. read more

Had brunch here yesterday they have an excellent happy hour. It's Monday through Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. can't beat that. They give you a couple of dollars off of their Margaritas drinks and everything including $3 off of her famous appetizers the table guac is excellent make sure you add your extra salt cuz they don't do it for you the shrimp empanadas with the guacamole and are good and we had two chicken quesadillas which are awesome you have to come and check them out of course we love happy hour Z'Tejas is great for happy hour Monday through Sunday read more

Went to Zetjas yesterday and the dinning room had nats flying every where. We were batting nats left and right. The only thing they could tell us is it's hot out they come in during the hot temps, we are sitting by the bar that draws them to that area. So the manager suggest moving us to another table away from the bar. All our meal plates, our appetizers, our drinks, utensils etc. We switch tables in the dinning room and encounter the same problem left and right nats. So bad I can feel them hitting my hand every time I bat them away. All they did was offer their apologies, nice but at that point no one said anything to us about discounting our meal. Or come and try us again when we are not infested with nats! Funny you can't even go on their website for customer service feed back. Either way it's sad to think I even finished my meal and paid, full well knowing that there are other restaurants that do not have that problem and it's the same temp for them as it is for Zejtas. Not sure if I just visited at a bad time but the service we received was nothing like I'd expect from Z'Tejas and the food wasn't as good as it used to be. Visited on a Friday afternoon, they weren't busy AND we had a reservation. Somehow we still waited over 30 minutes for our table to ready. Not sure what would have happened if we hadn't said anything but they eventually sat use once we pointed out how long we'd been waiting, the fact that we had a reservation, and that there were plenty of open tables... Our waiter had a bit of a smart mouth but at least our food came pretty quickly. Just wish it was as good as it was when I used to visit this location. Just updating this because I reached out to the Director of Operations as I was advised to do below. It has been over a week and I still have not received a response. Disappointing. Well, to start I had to wear a mask as I walked to my table. I could take mask off as I was seated. As you went to the restroom you did not have to wear a mask. As you left, you did not have to wear a mask. Really? Who thought of this and what science is this based off of? So Stupid! Then we order drinks, they brought us our bread with PLASTIC utensils. Cheap plastic utensils that broke as I buttered bread. Not sure of the science behind that. I did want to order steak but I did not have a steak knife in my pocket. So tacos it was. I have been to a lot of restraunts since Phoenix opened back up. This was the first place I had to wear a mask to be seated. I don't understand the logic at all! What is the reason for plastic? I would go to Wendy's if I wanted to eat using plastic. The food was OK but I will not go back. I understand wearing a mask due to Covid19 but to wear it to walk 500 feet to my table was insane! Plastic, No Thank You. I am an adult. I can eat with real silver! I really wanted to leave after the mask but it was getting late and we had not had dinner yet. I will Never go back to this place. Our waiter, although polite, seemed like she was impatient for drink and food selections, and I found it odd that we had to ask for the complimentary appetizer, better if the Resto asked diners if they want it or not, otherwise seems a bit deceptive. (Cornbread was just ok in the end). I ordered the cilantro pesto ruby trout, was a bit over cooked and not enough mango/avocado to accompany it. Hubby had the mushroom enchilada which he LOVED. Another diner had the fish tacos, which she liked. All in all, a bit of a mixed bag. If the service had seemed less rushed, prob would have earned the extra star. Great staff. The first time I visited a Z'Tejas, it was at the location in Phoenix for brunch. I didn't even know there was a location in Chandler. At night this location has a "grown and sexy" like vibe with the dim lighting. We went to celebrate a friend's birthday. Love that they have a whole veggie section on the menu, it made choosing my meal so simple. I had the wild mushroom enchiladas, my friends had the salmon. The Food was good but the portions are a bit small. My friends enjoyed their cocktails and the Ancho Fudge Pie was Yum! Staff is really kind and accommodating. Love the cornbread! read more

Our table was dirty, bread plate was dirty and no one showed up to place a drink order for almost 10 minutes. So, we walked out. I mentioned what happened to the hostess and the manager, Chris walked out after us. We told him what happened. He apologized and asked if we would come back in. We were set at a clean table and offered drinks right away. And, of course their amazing cornbread! Next came queso and dip that we didn't order. Our food was brought our right away and was delicious. My husband had the smothered burrito which he loved. I had An enchilada that was outstanding. Chris would not let us pay our bill and was so apologetic. We definitely never expected to be comp'd. Being in a service industry myself, i appreciate that sometimes things happen.
