What a find! I completely dropped my bundle when I stumbled upon Geoffrey Hatty Warehouse along…read morethis derelict section of Johnston Street. Of course I knew about Geoffrey Hatty Applied Arts in Prahran, but as someone who doesn't have a spare $20k to drop on a 1930's French armchair every few weeks, I don't go there often. The warehouse has 'other' 20th century pieces that have been hand picked and shipped from Europe (mostly France and Italy), but that have not been deemed worthy of the flashy Applied Arts showroom. I could not believe how incredible this stuff is - there's a massive pink velvet quilted bedhead, huge industrial brass ceiling lights, ultra-sleek modernist lounge suites and a sideboard that is big enough to hide over ten corpses in. Or, you know, a lot of crockery. The building itself is pretty cool too - it really looks like an old school warehouse, the type you'd want to convert into a home and fill with this furniture if you had a spare couple of mill. The warehouse is open by appointment, or on Saturdays from 10 til 4. Well worth a visit for lovers of antiques.

A lot of the furniture has a vaguely art deco, modernist vibe to it, and anyone who loves white furniture is might see something that they like. The prices seem pretty standard for your long term furniture investments. Most of the couches I tried were fairly comfortable, but they all seemed to be on slightly to obtuse an angle for my particular taste, so slouchers will probably enjoy them more than people who like to sit relatively upright. When we got up to do some comparisons, the woman was quick to race over to replump the cushions and then hurried off before we could get her attention. Which ordinarily would have been our cue to leave, but unfortunately we did really want the couch. We finally got some help to purchase the couch and are in the process of waiting the 8-9 weeks for it to be built as it's made to order. The transaction was pretty painless...mostly because this woman wanted so little to do with us that she didn't bother with too much up sell. So in all, definitely recommended for a local furniture option. But no stars for service, that's for sure.

Once you choose a design, you then go into size specifics and choose a tint for the Tasmanian Oak tables which are made and designed right here in Melbourne. The same goes for their Melbourne-made sofas and dining chairs. Choose a design then go into the fabric or leather specifics. Remember to ask about leather and fabric protection. Did I mention all made in Melbourne furniture comes with a 10-year warranty? Just keep in mind when shopping that all furniture made in Australia take 6-10 weeks to get made up, specially for you so don't put your furniture shopping trip off or you might have to sit on the floor in your new home.
