Yes, you'll find products by Lee, Bonds, Hard Yakka and there'll be a suit sale too, but I'm referring to the sheer quantity of stuff. The racks are completely rammed, chock full of stock. The shelves are piled high, and there doesn't appear to be a space that the owner hasn't used for merchandise. The first half of the shop is girls' stuff - vest tops, t-shirts, little fleecy shorts, pink polo tops, and jeans. In the next room is the change rooms and stuff for guys. I came here with my man and he found some good trackie pants and shorts. Not exactly cheap but not too pricey either, and infinitely more interesting than shopping at KMart. I believe they also offer tailoring services, but I don't really know anything about that.

Enter Formal Wear of Melbourne. They were a pleasure to deal with. They had everything tailored and ready to go within a few days. That's a big feat when there a groom, six (yes six!) groomsmen, a page boy and two fathers to dress. I couldn't be more positive about our experience, and would definitely recommend them.

If you've ever been through the process of getting a suit sorted out for a wedding, you'll know that it can be a really boring experience, as it can take a long time for each individual to get fitted and that sort of thing. Sometimes I've been treated rather rudely, too. I'm a portly gentleman, for sure, but I don't need snide comments from the fitter about my physique, thank you very much sir. Anyway, long story short, this place was very efficient in getting us all fitted out, making sure that everything looked like it should, and generally did their best to make sure the groom and his posse of groomsmen looked the part. I recommend these guys completely.

We ordered a bedroom collection and 3 months later when it finally arrived they had sent the wrong furniture! It took a month before anyone could even tell us when we would be receiving the correct furniture. Finally the owner contacted us and was beyond rude and patronizing, had zero empathy, and could care less that we were sent the wrong furniture. So now we have to wait another 3 months to receive the correct furniture and they have already charged us for it. What started as a positive experience at first because the people who work in the showroom were helpful, ended up being the absolute biggest nightmare. Save your money and sanity and go somewhere else.

On the other, the stuff that comes out of these shops are cheap, shitty, and awful, being about 95% corkboard and 5% miscellaneous crap to hold it together. To be fair, I'm saying three stars because from both points of view, it's probably fair. If you need to get yourself a houseload of furniture and you don't have much cash, this place is it. If you can afford it, you'll shop elsewhere. The service is pretty damn good, though. Staff are cheerful and helpful, and if you just want to be left the hell alone in your private shame of considering a $200 bed, then they're not offended if you tell them that you'll call on them if you need help. I've gotten a few things here. Many of them are still in one piece.

Beautiful pieces of furniture in such good nick can demand a high price and they do. Knowing I can't afford much on this floor, I usually cast a quick glance over the goods just as a treat to my eyes, and then head up the stairs to the vintage clothes. I'm always pleasantly surprised by the prices here. For this location on Smith Street, the stall holders could really ask for more for their vintage finds, but they don't, and I for one, am not only grateful, but feel vindicated for being annoyed at retailers for upping the price tag just because they can. This is how it should be done. Beautiful store filled with earthly delights for all the enjoy (and possess).

Beautiful tables, sleek chairs and intricate sideboards are scattered throughout the enormous store. There are also some fantastic lamps, tea sets and vases, that look as thought they belong in your grandparents houses in the 1950s and 1940s. Up towards the back is a modest clothing section that has a great range of shoes, bags and accessories too (90s backpacks are back in people!). They also have an impressive range of costume jewellery. It isn't surprising that the Smith Street Bazaar always has some devoted retro fans or artists crawling through and marveling at the woodwork or kitsch posters. Last week I was very tempted by a slick wooden chair that was low, sexy, and remarkably modern, but with a price of $700 (quite reasonable for a quality piece but a mere dream to a student), I unfortunately had to kiss that beautiful piece of work goodbye. One day when I have an income and a house, I'll buy some furniture from the Smith Street Bazaar. But until then, it's always a pleasure to just look.
