My friends and I went to Zoo to kick off a wild night of clubbing on the Malecon. Zoo was the first spot we went to and had a blast. We got to the club around 11pm. The place wasn't quite packed yet, but it was certainly picking up steam. Zoo really leaned in on the Zoo theme especially with their animal decor and "real" gorillas, who were employees in gorilla suits. Poor guys must feel so hot in them! The women's bathroom was clean, which was a plus, but it felt small and cramped in there. My sister reserved a VIP booth and bottle service for my bachelorette party. There were 8 of us, and we sat comfortably at one end of a row of VIP booths. Our particular booth looked out to the big "ZOO" sign and a towering dance stage that you have to climb a ladder to get to. It was great for people watching, might I add. Even I ended up climbing up that stage to be a spectacle thanks to the encouragement of a gorilla. The gorilla guy was really fun and friendly, by the way. He helped me up and down the ladder to make sure I didn't fall. Between the two clubs where we got VIP bottle service, we unanimously agreed that Zoo had the better deal. We got 2 bottles of 1942 Don Julio, which were reasonably priced, and they were cheaper than the prices you would get for them back in the US. I felt like the DJ did not read the crowd as well. People were dancing to hip hop and reggaeton but simmered when dance music came on. read more

I was literally shocked, when we went to leave the server dropped us our tab but that amount was incorrect. I looked at the bill and it had double the amount of shots after they had told us girls get a free shot when they enter. "It was not free" and the tip of the ice burg was when we were questioning why there was so many shot charges on the tab, he kept deflecting on the charges. THENNN ON TOP OF ALL THAT, we wanted to not tip him on the card we were paying with I had cash in my hand, and I said I'm going to do cash instead of on card. He then says no no no and moved the tip to 20% and then I grabbed the tablet and said you can't just tip yourself. He loved the tip amount to 20% 3 times! I have never had this happen to me before. I would advise any of the other clubs on the street and skip the Zoo. They lured us in with free shots for the ladies which never came. Then we ordered a round of shots and they gave us extra shots we didn't ask for and charged us for them. Then when we went to leave and pay the bill, they tried to auto tip themselves over 20% and charge us more expensively in the conversion. I said no and canceled it and he continued to refuse to let me put in my own tip. This repeated itself 4 times before I took the card reader and did it myself. I would skip this place and just go to any other bar/club in the area. We stopped by for a quick drink but all the drinks we received were weirdly sweet or didn't taste quite right. I ordered a margarita that was probably 98% mixer and 2% tequila. The time it took to order and get the drinks also took a while too considering there weren't too many people in there. BEWARE!!! Don't go here. They will STEAL YOUR MONEY! They 4x overcharged us and created a bill with drinks we never ordered. They added 30 beers to our bill, we don't even drink beer. We had 4 margaritas and 4 shots and that was it. They charges $600usd. We argued but they had already charged the card. Then after over charging us we tried to leave and they wanted even more money - thinking we were drunk and unaware. Which we weren't because we didn't drink much. They called the cops. I liked this place more than Mandala for the music, the layout, the staff and the drinks. We had some drinks before the night parties started so we came back later and the guy at the entrance recognized us so we didn't have to get a stamp or pay or anything (if there was any) and I loved that gesture especially because I wanted to leave Mandala and be in a different place where they don't smoke on your face all the time and they still have amazing lights and art. They also have much better music, at least that Saturday night they did. The crowd is mostly local. read more

Well comes to no surprise that these people take advantage of you. First off. I've stayed in PV 2x. This being my second time. We came here on a Tuesday first during the week just to see the night life. Seemed quiet. So we came back Saturday. That was the first BIG MISTAKE. Sadly as people are poor, and make little depending there job-title. these people who work there will STEAL ANYTHING YOU LEAVE OUT, on your table, LIKE YOUR PHONE!! We were there for less than an hour when all this happened. They are always watching you and find you as a target. Always keep everything in your purse and in your pockets and nothing ever left out on the table. I met a lady at the beach who recommended I always lock it up because children or thieves will steal it or drug attic's. Well it did happen and it wasn't a good feeling. So that's exactly what happened to us. The night before were leaving to go home. I'm mortified and the thought that someone like their own worker would steal our phone. Three weeks later since we couldn't file a police report it magically appeared. This person called me in regards to finding our phone!!! - long story short, saying that he worked at the zoo and that he found my fiancé's phone at McDonald's which is a lie. He was holding our phone for ransom for $300. He basically said that he is a young person and needs the money which is super unfortunate. When we got home we had to spend $1200 to buy a new phone and pay off that phone which sucks, like literally right off the plane we rush to Verizon to buy a new phone. Snd shut this one off. I shut this phone off in the meantime and it was completely disabled. I would highly recommend to always travel with find my iPhone turned on. In this case it was not and it was stolen right off of our table. The bouncers and staff turn the place upside down and if we only had the staff members checked we probably would've found it that night. They checked our VIP table right out in front we check the bushes and everything else. It was nowhere in sight. I wouldn't recommend this as one of the servers mention this happens almost every weekend. It is obviously a scam and they are getting away with all these people phone I'm sure they have a collection of them just sitting in the office or at this person's home. I have all the screen shots. And even one of the managers names, or the guy that dresses up in the monkey suit. Who knows, at this point we are safe back home, I would never returned back to this place for this specific reason everything comes full circle. read more

"The place lived up to its name... a ZOO" Three clubs by the boardwalk next to other competes for your attention as you decide how your night will turn out to be Mandala, the Zoo and the La Vaquita. Mandala with its boujee upscale ambiance thanks to strobe lights and chandeliers, the La vanquita with a swing that extends out the bar can really catch your attention. And then there's the Zoo. With it's jungle theme decor with zoo animals statues welcoming you and a massive foam dunking station. I really dont see the use for it as it just eats up a good chunk of the venue and occasionally getting the floor wet. Obviously we ended up at the Zoo mainly because my friend got talked into it. Quickly got seated and drinks came out quickly. I couldn't figure out the crowd as everyone acted differently. You get your typical foreign college drunks, a local and some older folks. Couldnt get the vibe of the place. Anyway, service was decent but when we stopped ordering drinks to let out body catch up, you can tell the waiter wanted us out probabaly to get a new set of patrons so he can get more tips. Didn't appreciate the "you need to pay now" comment after having to spend a decent amount on drinks and not even being seated more than an hour. Our waiter claimed our drinks had double shots and were apparently not on menu resulting in 3x charge. I have spent a huge part of my life living abroad through both state department and US corporate overseas assignments and this is your typical tourist trap. Where they try and take advantage of inexperienced and ill formed travelers. In this instance order at this establishment at your own risk. I cannot emphasize enough to avoid this place. I wish I could give ZERO stars. The location was cool BUT they were trying to charge us $1,500 US dollars (which we refused) for just my boyfriend & I to have a handful of drinks on my birthday. Thank you Zoo for showing my Bride to be a great time. The Zoo team took care of our group throughout the night we were there. We had bottle service and they gave the bachelorette a special drink to celebrate. We requested the Despacito song from Justin Bieber and they helped the girls dance on the middle stage with the go go dancer. I want to preface this review by saying we absolutely realized we made some serious mistakes, but TOURISTS BEWARE!! We had a great trip to Puerto Vallarta, and decided on our last night to hit up the night life. This club looks like a lot of fun, but the employees are very obviously watching you at all times and waiting until the perfect moment to rob you. We realize we were lulled into a false sense of security, which was definitely our fault. These people are watching you and waiting to find the perfect moment to distract you and steal your money. We payed for an "open bar" for a very reasonable price, and the more drinks we had the less we started paying attention. At the end of the night for us, an employee of this bar came up to my husband claiming I was so intoxicated that I knocked over a tray full of about five "very expensive shots" I was definitely letting loose and having fun but this absolutely never happened, and even if it did, we payed for an open bar so no big deal!! The employee started to tell my husband that no, they were very expensive shots so he had to pay for them. All of this was a distraction to have somebody pick pocket him and steal all of the cash out of his wallet. Unfortunately, we were drinking and not thinking about exactly what was going on, so to avoid any conflict he payed them. The employee then brought us some "water", which I took one sip of before my husband told me not too. They then ushered us into a cab and low and behold, we only had enough pesos to afford a cab ride to our hotel, and the cab driver literally told us "Normally it's 10, but for you 20" We are in Mexico and obviously do not want to start any issues, but im writing this all out right now because we realized exactly what happened and I really just want other tourists to know that even though it seems like a safe place, do not let your guard down and always be aware of your surrounding and that, absolutely, they are watching you and waiting to take advantage. read more

What a Zoo! This place lives up to its name. We've actually been here twice, once on st Patrick's day this past weekend and once about 3 years ago last time we stayed in PV It's a riot! Vast age range but a lot of college kids this last time on spring break. And they were sloppy as hell! Such hilarious people watching. There's a few elevated dance stages and cages, drunk white girls love to get in a birdcage and shake their booties! So funny. Drinks were weak, I had 5 vodka sodas and should have been in a birdcage or passed out if they were full strength. They were not. Boyfriend plays it smart and drinks beer because u can't water down beer! No cover that night. There's also a giant swing that you can swing out over the Malecon- seems dangerous if you're wasted! SCAM!! Do NOT go here unless you want to be ripped off. Overpriced drinks- they added more items to our bill and refused to remove them. We ordered 5 drinks and total was $60 USD. Then the waiter demanded us to pay 15% tip although he served us for only one round of drinks, and we were in there for literally 15 mins. I told him to eff off and we walked out. To put this into perspective- Bar Oceano (couple doors down) only charges 17 pesos ($1 USD) for margaritas during the day and 55 pesos during evening hrs. Hard liquor you will pay around 75 pesos & up during evenings. Btw- I live here now and have been coming to PV for years, so I am very familiar with how these establishments try to scam tourists. If you want to have a fun night with great music, service and decent drink prices, I highly recommend going to Morelos one block up, or Mandela few doors down. Came to this club a few nights as it is right on the strip with a bunch of bars and clubs. I was there for my Bro's bach and we hit up every spot we could in a weeks time. The Zoo staff was friendly and tried to keep us entertained. They had staff dressed up as animals and dancers in cages all over the place. It's a pretty big space and they kept it lit. You probably can get anything you need here so if you got pesos to burn hit them up. read more

Love the layout, this is what Clubs should strive for and for crowd movement. Bathrooms were kept clean constantly and music selection was very good. But why 2 stars, that's because all the drinks here are extremely watered down. Don't bother for the "50 peso shot and show" from the girls with the whistle it's basically watered down juice and tequila. Also ordered many drinks throughout the night without getting the slightest buzz. Probably came out sober honestly. I repeat kept ordering a different type of drink every time and they are extremely watered down. Don't come here trying to get drunk. Extremely disappointed. I'm not a club person. I'm in my mid thirties, and got all my partying out of me in my twenties. However, this place was super entertaining. I kinda balked at the waiters as they passed by and would attempt a move on the strip pole my party was sitting in front of, but they were all really engaged with their jobs as entertainers, not just servers, and I really had a good time. My friends and family had a super fun time on the little cage dancing apparatus, which I didn't partake in, but looked like fun! THOUGHT LONG AND HARD ABOUT THE 2 STARS.. My friend & I were trying to scope out a place to go out for the night (worth attending for the last few hours of my birthday) when we passed by 2 places: Mandala & Zoo. Mandala wasn't open yet nor did they have anything going on at 4pm, but Zoo actually had a guy dressed in a monkey (very small, skinny gorilla perhaps?) costume outside posing for pictures. They were also open as a restaurant. We were drawn in by the reggaeton music they had playing & decided to order a drink. I regret not catching the name of our server, but he was amazing! He made sure to check in on us every so often & even compted us 2 tequila shots to start the night, or evening lol he basically made the impression this was THE place to be at. At the end of our drinks, he gave us 2 pink wristbands stating it was also ladies night since it was Thursday & certain drinks were free (SOLD!) Well what could've caused such a terrible experience later? For starters our original server wasn't there, which wasn't a big deal. However to make a long story short, our service was not great at all come 11pm. We ordered 2 Don Julio Blanco shots, which we learned were not part of the promo. We weren't worried, however our server turned out to be the judgemental kind. It's not like here in the states where you walk up to the bar, they seat & serve you. Once other tourists began arriving, he would pass us by & I know he didn't forget about us since he would make eye contact. My friend also didn't wanna wave him down, that to us is rude all around. I'm pretty sure he thought he would make better money tending to other tables, well we were ready to enjoy the night. He did that enough times to where we decided we wanted out. From what my friend told me, he told her tip was not included, like it was mandatory. When we got the bill, she paid & hadn't added tip just yet, WHEN HE BROUGHT HIS MANAGER OVER. I'm not exact on the conversation they had but the manager didn't sound happy nor did she. She left him a decent tip in the end for our 2 shots, one soda & one Redbull stating "since I'm not an @×× hole" but we definitely weren't pleased Had it been any other time I feel like it wouldn't have been such a big deal. This is the worst place where we ate in Puerto Vallarta. The reason is because they use tricky tactics to suck all the money that they can out of you. For example, to entice us to come in, they offered buy one, get one margaritas. We each (2) got one, then they said, oh, that means BOGO per person. Then they charge 5.00 US for two bottles of water. Then, when we received the hand written check, they failed to write in that they already added the tip. (I assuming to hope to get a double tip). Then, when they returned with our change, they SHORT changed us. When I got my order of Fajitas, it was mostly peppers. Hardly any meat. What had happened was that 2 local girls from Puerto Vallarta were arguing with our servers that they were charging us more. What the servers were trying to do is say we had to pay a service fee which was their tip but they were trying to take advantage and get 1,200 ish pesos out of us when we were offering them pesos already. The servers said it wasn't enough and that they have to split it. So after they kept pushing about tip I just put 10% on the card and took the pesos we were gonna give them. I don't think they were charging us more just trying to skimp tip out of us making it seem like the service fee was mandatory to be honest but the local girls were insistent and that's why the manager came up to me and offered me a Mexican candy shot to try to be "nice" and make us "happy".
