Love the decor - cosy yet funky and contemporary, but personally I've always found the food a bit lacklustre.

These guys have recently changed their menu and it is not nearly as good as it was - hopefully its just a temporary problem.

    Review Highlights - Zizzi

Although the food at Zizzis is expensive, I only tend to go there on a special occasion so once in a while doesn't damage your wallet!

Cucina - Melenzane involtini with polenta. Just yum!

The food was very expensive with tiny portions! Definitely Not as good as it used to be ! I was embarrassed to have recommended it! Plus they charged my Visa card twice which I found out when l later checked bank statement and after a long drawn out investigation they refunded me . No offer of compensation or apology given . I don't recommend it anymore ! Derby seems to suck the life out of places!

I was in town for business and in my previous visits to Derby had struggled to find anything particularity tasty or anywhere offering good value for money. When Cucina came on to my radar I decided to give it a shot. Although it's situated on what looks like a dodgy back street in the city centre, I would urge you to not let this put you off. The restaurant itself is contemporary, fresh and looks recently refurbished. We were hungry that evening so decided to go early. Despite the fact we were the first customers in the door we were warmly greeted and made to feel at home. I had a quick perusal of the menu and started salivating instantly. Cucina isn't your bog standard Italian restaurant, they have some really classy and rustic dishes on offer, and something different to your bog standard Spag Bol effort. I opted for the pasta e fagioli to start (an orzo pasta and canellini bean soup) followed by the aubergine parcels as a main. Everything just tasted incredible. Really authentic flavours, perfectly seasoned and cooked. I must say, my Italian granny would be struggling to compete with these guys. Incredibly again were the fantastic prices. We paid under £34 for two HUGE Peroni's, 2 starters and 2 mains. Astounding value! A true diamond in the rough and an essential place to dine if in Derby. Grazie!

    Carluccio’s - Open Kitchen

I decided to visit Carluccio's for the first time since two bad experiences at Manchester Spinningfields (Gave me gluten by mistake more than once) and London St Pancras (Poor quality, bland food), I didn't have very high expectations and I mainly only dined here to use the rest of an e-gift voucher sent by head office a while ago, which was given to be due to the Manchester Spinningfields branch feeding me gluten, of which I am allergic - I must state this voucher was not to write a review, it was just an attempt to restore my faith in the brand. The service was good, the staff seemed rather friendly and offered me a selection of tables, I decided to opt for a table in front of the open kitchen. He also helped me check the balance of my gift voucher before I dined, so I knew how much I had to spend. Much to my excitement and delight, they have brought back the pear juice which used to be one of my favourite fruit juices they offered until they removed it off the menu, it is a little pricey at £2.95 considering it isn't listed under their fresh juices but as very few places do fruit juice it is a little bit more reasonable, plus it is a restauraunt after all. For my food, I ordered the gluten-free Carbonara which is normally my favourite pasta dish, I was especially interested to see how they did with this due to it being so poor at the London St Pancras branch back in August 2019, however it was much better. In all, it was mostly seasoned well and the meat was crispy while the gluten-free pasta was just okay, they used rigatoni however I did find the pasta its-selves to be a little dry and bland and it did require a lot of sauce even though parts were seasoned well, the pasta just required a lot of chewing and just stayed dry in the mouth after eating and the big clumps of cheese, I'm guessing from the sauce and parmesan sprinkled on top to form a ball, made it worse. All in all, not a bad location, obviously it isn't the place you'd go-to for the best and most authentic Italian cuisine and it is a little overpriced compared to other Italian's but my meal was okay, obviously, it was ruined by parts of the pasta, but it was certainly far from the worst gluten-free pasta I've had. 3*
