One of the oldest pubs in Salzburg. We went twice because we liked it so much! It's not very big so sometimes finding a seat is tricky (especially during the Christmas markets and Krampus run). Wowowowowowow! So I came here to dinner more because I was looking to have a few beers but man am I glad I did. So I traditionally tend to order a wurst or a schnitzel but I decided to live it up a bit and order this Schweinsbraten mit Saurkraut und Semmelknodel and man was I pleased with my meal. The gravy on the pork was phenomenal! It had a fairly pronounced taste of Caraway seeds and I was in heaven. The Pork was delicious especially when you mopped up this heavenly sauce, and paired it with a bite of Sauerkraut. Oooo baby. I will say I was pretty meh about the Semmelknodel but who even cares when the other components of the meal are so fantastic. There were also good beer to be had and a nice and lively atmosphere. Stopped in here for a beer and something to warm us up after being in a rainy tour. The service was so great, our server couldn't have been better. They offered tap water which made our American free water drankin' hearts so happy. The food hit the spot, it was the perfect comfort food after being stuck in the rain. My friend got the potato soup which was not overly creamy or heavy and paired perfectly with a pretzel. I got the cheese dumplings, and I'm not sure what I was expecting but I essentially got what I'd consider to be some of those most delicious Mac and cheese ever + fries crispy onions on top. Although not actually Mac and cheese that's what it reminded me of, it was pure delicious comfort food. My meal also came with a side salad which was a nice addition. After the meal and chatting at the table a bit our server came to ask if we needed the check or if we needed schnapps or coffee. Ended up trying a type of schnapps that he couldn't quite translate into English but the man at the table next to us compared it to pine cone. Whatever it was, it was the perfect ending to a great meal. Can't say I usually have a shot of schnapps after a meal but according to the waiter "that's the Austrian way," (whether that's true or not I don't care because we had a delicious meal and a great time). read more

While located in a tourist area, I was pleasantly surprised by this Beerhouse. I sat at one of the sidewalk tables which was perfect for people watching and enjoying the square. The service was good, reasonable prices for the area and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The menu is a variety of Austrian food with a section of specials. Sausage plate was great, beer plate was out of this world, beer was great, service was great. What more can a man want?

We stopped in here because it was cold and raining. Plus, the hound was able to join us inside. Started with the potato soup, which was very good (especially since it was cold). Our meal was the assortment of wieners and the schnitzel with cranberry sauce. Both solid dishes! We finished with the Mozart Parfait. The dessert was our favorite part because it was different! Food came out way too fast to be freshly made. Apple strudel seemed to be reheated in microwave crust was soggy but flavor was good. The ambiance is good so stop by for a beer, but skip the food. I was trying to eat healthy so had a sesame encrusted salmon... it came out breded and fried. It's right in the middle of everything and had good reviews, so we decided to check it out and hope that it wasn't too touristy. This place is really great. Nice and cozy, friendly service, good beer, and delicious Austrian food -- and it even had a few locals. It's perfect for a lunch or dinner when you want some traditional local food, or just a good beer. Wolfgang, our server, was amazing. We had prompt and happy service, and he gave us great suggestions for both beer and food. I had the cheese dumplings with salad. The dumplings were plump and super cheesy but not too much, ensuring that you could taste the delicious vegetable filling. The salad was so good (lettuce, shredders carrot, tomato and a delicious dressing) that I could've eaten 2 salads and skipped my main! My friend had grosstle, fried potatoes with beef and pork and a fried egg on top served in a skillet. Everything was excellently flavoured, absolutely delicious and presented with a smile. read more

Not a whole lot to say. We were seated right away. The service was friendly and helpful. The drinks and the food came out fast. Very small menu. Which I feel is a good thing. Means they offer a limited menu, and they do it right. As an American, it was nice to see in their menu they had an English menu. They also have their menu in several languages. Which is very nice. The food came out hot and was quite flavorful. Pretty good food. The servings are of a pretty size portion too. Craft beers as well as desserts!! A lot of food. Not a whole lot more you can ask for, good food, good service, and a good ambiance. When I'm in this area again, we will probably come here. read more

The coziest of places, AND they let you smoke inside! As an American, its sort of a fun treat - even though I don't smoke. OK what's a tee-totaler doing in a "Bier" house? And what's a vegetarian doing in Salzburg? And why would a non-smoker push through a smoky restaurant in a building built in 1300? Because Bierhaus Zipfer has at least 14 non alcoholic beverages on their menu ( besides non-alcoholic beers) including their own "HOPS-Hopfenlimonade" a hops flavored citrus drink. Their menu has 4 vegetarian versions of their main dishes. The kaseknodel (a pasta like little dumpling with cheese)were excellent. Their carrot coconut ginger soup with ubiquitous pumpkin seeds was top class. Salads fresh. And you just take a deep breath as you pass the smokers in the front part of the restaurant, to get to the completely smoke free dining room in back. Not vegan but you can have a great dead animal free meal here with no smoke and a completely clear head. And for wonderful touristy Salzburg, very fair prices. I'm not sure if Mozart ate here but he should have. read more

Stopped in here because it was late and they were open until midnight. Had the potato and bacon soup....really good, the goulash was also good but not great. I liked the strudel. The beer was very good and the waiters were friendly and gave me good recommendations. Can't beat the location, the building was built in the 1500's and there is an old dried up water well in the middle of the hallway with a skeleton holding a beer stein! Nice spot to stop for a quick beer in between sight seeing old town. I liked the decor, enjoyed some beer, and also had a cold pretzel. I learned here that's how pretzels are served - cold, unlike in the US where they're served warm. People also seemed to be enjoying the food. I wouldn't mind trying the food here on another visit. read more

We stopped in here for a quick bite before a concert. We got an awesome "beer wreath" that allowed us to taste a wide variety of beer. I also had the best pumpkin soup of my entire life at the restaurant. The inside feels like a small beer hall and is very cozy. read more

Nice old school bierhaus on the Universitaatsplatz. On a nice day they have tables in the square and there's great people watching to go with the beer. The building was where Nannerl, Mozart's sister spent here last several years. The Zipfer bier came in a few varieties, all very tasty. The salad that came with the meal was amazing. Layers of tender lettuce with various pickled veggies tucked inside and potato salad underneath. I would come back just for that. read more

This place looked promising from the outside. Beer was good, food was good. But service was terrible. I understand that tourists can be annoying sometimes but the employees made us feel like second class citizens. They kept on staring at us and talking in their own language while talking smack behind our backs. It was clear that they were frustrated at us and did not want to serve us. After finishing our drinks and soups, they immediately handed us our bill as if to say you all need to leave. Definitely not suggesting this place to anyone. read more

Zipfer Bierhaus is a wonderful spot. I stumbled upon this spot on my walk through the square/town. The vegetarian pasta salad was delicious especially on a hot day. It came with huge blocks of feta cheese which I didn't particularly think was needed but you can eat around it no problem. The restaurant staff was really nice and funny. Waiter caused a scene and had to be shown the menu to refresh himself of his own establishment's policies.Paying over 30% with mandatory and extra service charges was excessive, the food was decent but not freshly prepared on order, I would go anywhere else, this practice seemed as dishonest as a strip club hustle. read more

Wonderful place! Great food fantastic service and just a great all around must-do! Open later than most with a warm feeling and happy environment. We have two pre-teenagers and they both loved it! The menu was in so many different languages and if you read the beginning of the menus you can see that and that this is a welcoming tavern to all! Very clean and historic building!
