    5-star savoriness!

The Pie & Mash Pop-Up Shop at Zingerman's Cornman Farms finished up tonight with another huge culinary winner. For the past five Wednesdays in March, Owner and Executive Chef Kieron Hales has prepared and sold out 200 savory British pie dinners for takeout. Tonight's spectacular offering was built around the Devon Pie which originated in Chef Kieron's hometown of Devon, England. This hearty pie was filled with a tasty combo of russet potatoes, leeks, smoked bacon, garlic and topped with cheddar cheese. It was complimented with hearty mashed potatoes and a delicious Carrot & Swede Purée made with carrots, rutabagas, thyme and local honey. What a wonderfully sweet and creamy side dish! As always, the takeaway box also contained a serving of the traditional bright green British Parsley Liquor Sauce to compliment the pie. My wife and I both agreed that the Devon Pie was our favorite among the three different pies that we enjoyed during the Pie & Mash Pop-Up. As our British dinner drew to a close, we were thrilled to find, tucked away in our takeout bag, two small squares of delicious English Sea Salt Caramel Fudge. What a great 5-star finish to Cornman Farms' Pie & Mash Pop-Up!

My family has been to several different events at Cornman Farms and we are never disappointed! Most recently, we had dinner at their Fish & Chips Pop-Up Shop. As people who love to go out, but aren't really comfortable with the idea of dining at a restaurant yet, Cornman Farms provided the perfect opportunity for us. This event is very popular, so it's necessary to pre-order your dinners for a specific block of time. After arriving at the Farmhouse, you call or text to let the staff know you've arrived. They call or text you back when they have set your well-labeled bag on the nearby picnic table. After picking it up, you simply find a pretty place on their property to park and tuck into dinner. The food was absolutely delicious and they provided everything you could've needed (ketchup, malt vinegar, tartar sauce, curry sauce, plastic cutlery, napkins and wet-naps.) You could also take your food home, but we enjoyed it piping hot with the beautiful views all around the property. This event is scheduled for every Wednesday through August and there is no doubt we will be going back!

We did the "elopement" package in the farmhouse for 20 people, which was the cozy vibe we were going for.

We were lucky enough to have our wedding on a gorgeous day in June at the prairie barn, and we were completely spoiled with the attentiveness of the bartending, groundskeeping, and planning team. Guests absolutely loved our venue -- from the air-conditioned barn, stunning tent and table rentals, cocktail hour patio, fire pits, and luscious lawn that we got married on in front of a big oak tree! We had the property completely to ourselves from Friday-Sunday to set up, party, and clean up, which was an added bonus and stress-saver. I would recommend this venue to anybody looking to get married in a modern barn or farm venue. Since then, RHF has opened up the Nest, their kitchen & bar, which we also have loved frequently this past season!

We were seated at our table and given the cocktail menu. I ordered the rosemary greyhound. It was refreshing and had just the right amount of rosemary in it. They have a full bar and others at my table had mimosas or bourbon. The brunch menu had many choices, all looked amazing. At my table we had the short rib hash, the boursin cheese egg sandwich, the salmon egg scramble & the sausage, egg and pimento sandwich. Everything was excellent. The hash had amazing roasted potatoes, a nice amount of meat and two beautiful fried eggs on top. Actually, all the dishes came with a side of roasted potatoes that were wonderful. One of the things that I think would really elevate this restaurant is if their orange juice was fresh squeezed. However, it was quite good. We will be coming back soon to try the Italian grinder and the Nutella French toast. We are told that there is music on some nights and we did not review the dinner menu. However, if it's anything like the brunch menu, I can't wait to try it.

The main dinner took place in a large tent, which kept the light rain off us but still let us enjoy the cool evening breezes. Staff at the bar were very friendly and accommodating. After dinner the rain had stopped and some went up to the barn to dance, others went to chill in a small shed very comfortably appointed with cushy couches and chairs; we hit the boogie barn for another glass of wine, then strolled down to the campfire on the shore of the small pond. A waterside gazebo was nearby if you wanted some shelter. My main quibble came as we were walking out. There are no lights in the parking area and it was a little difficult to find the row we'd parked in. As well lit as the area around the buildings was, couldn't one light be put in the parking area? Still, a very pleasant night, and I'd be happy to return.

More important to you, it's nestled in a beautiful neighborhood about one mile to most elements of the U of M central campus. So you can walk, if you're so inclined, and five to ten minutes in a car gets you to any number of important or interesting places. Parking is on the street, which turned out to be no problem, as there always were plenty of spaces near the entry sidewalk. Perhaps it's helpful to say that the Stone Chalet campus is the site of a former Unitarian church. That's how I remember it, driving/jogging by during student years. Therese remembers it was the site of piano recitals. Anyway, the former "main building" has been converted to an event center (we didn't spend much time there) and the former parsonage converted to guest quarters. Our room was Alice-in-Wonderland themed, spacious and cozy for an autumn visit. Breakfast was ordered via an app, with many choices, including gluten-free options for Therese. If you want a good and even inspiring conversation, seek out the owner Vincent, who can share some fascinating stories about real estate and his efforts to purchase, maintain, and make profitable the Stone Chalet property. We enjoyed our time here, and wish Vincent, Daisy, family and staff, all the best. Thank you, Stone Chalet.
