We found this place close to us, AND very economical (compared to the other Michelin Star Restaurants) and ordered the "Black Canapes", the "PICI with Bread Crumbs" and "Tagliata with Rucola" which was essentially steak frites. The starter, "Black Canapes" was crostinis with the local specialty of chicken liver pate. The texture was unlike anything we tasted as unlike most pates, it wasn't smooth, and instead had small chunks of liver. While I really liked the texture, the taste was a little to different than what we're used to. The wife ordered PICI with bread crumbs, which essentially was a type of pasta similar to spaghetti, but with much thicker noodles. She didn't like the al dante texture but I would say it's the best plate of pasta in all of Italy during our trip. The little bits of bread crumbs made a huge impact to the texture, which was different than pasta in north america as the al dante in Italy was very very chewy. Highly recommended. The Tagliata was good, but didn't blow my mind as it was essentially steak frites. The flavoring of the olive oil mixture sauce was really good, but I think there was some misunderstanding between me and the waitress as I thought I ordered medium rare, but she probably thought I thought just medium...which resulted in an overcooked steak. Still delicious but would've been much better if it was a bit more raw.

We were here during truffle season and it did not disappoint. My husband got the truffle pasta and I got the risotto and both were spectacular. Very generous truffle portion. This was probably our most expensive meal in Italy. The wine was nearly double what we paid in the countryside or in Genoa, and most items felt overpriced compared with other areas of Tuscany. That said, this is a heavy tourist area, so that was not entirely surprising. The steak was good, and the pasta carbonara was really good. Overall, I enjoyed the meal, but I personally preferred dining in the countryside or in less touristy areas, where the atmosphere felt more relaxed and the value was better.

As we entered and were taken to a table, my wife mentioned that we were return visitors from over a decade ago. The waiter we had back then was very friendly and the food fantastic. My wife said we should have left when the waiter started treating us with disdain as we asked for olive oil for the stale bread that came to our table in a bag. She could hear the employees complaining about Americans in the other room, definitely referring to us. The Dutch guy looked down a street and said there was a place that looked brightly lighted: La Vecchia Taverna. We were invited with opened arms, outside seating only available, which was fine with us. We were hungry and it had been at least an hour since our last glass of wine. The wine we selected (Caeles) at the recommendation of our server (Luciano) was delicious, as was the second bottle. The mixed salad was fresh and delicious, the bruschetta astonishing. For a main course I had the boar bolognese and my wife and the Dutch guy both had the cacio e Pepe (salt & pepper) pasta. Both dishes were perfecto and I would highly recommend both to any travelers.
