I've tried many of the alternatives out there, from old fashioned barber shops to gimmick shops with sports themes to other types of salons. This is the only place I've felt welcomed and cared for rather than just a head of hair and a wallet. Relaxing AND a great cut each time! The availability of late in the day appointments has also been a major plus because I haven't had to take time off from work in order to get a haircut. read more

Have been going to this salon for quite sometime- and am never unhappy. Always offered something to drink from the friendly staff, and the atmosphere is beautiful- always changing with season/holiday- all of this says, they care. Yes, there are some bold colors that come out of this salon, and I am not a fan personally for me- however, the color that I do receive is always right on the money- never had damaged hair. They always ask what I am looking for, and give me the pros and cons for my hair type, and I come out super satisfied. The reviews I've read on here are disheartening- and I'm sure things are taken out of context. This salon is professional, and has a friendly atmosphere- and a great convenient location. read more

The new Zen location is amazing!!! Feels like I am in some high-end spa. The stylist really listened to what I wanted. I overheard her with another client explaining he process. UPDATE: I received a message that the owner believes my review was a personal attack on her, due to my inclusion of what I felt was conversation she should not have had in front of customers, using the excuse that her son has high functioning autism and she felt I was belittling her and her difficulties. Sorry you feel that way, but as the mother of 2 boys with autism, one high functioning and one moderate to severe, I am more than perfectly aware of how difficult it is to raise children on the spectrum. I am sure you are personally a nice woman who cares for your family and others very much, however my comment was simply to say you should watch what you vent to customers who do not know you, esp when you are stepping in because another stylist literally destroyed my hair! Your words can come across very poorly, and in my case with children on the spectrum, downright insulting! My hair was literally fried and I needed to see a dr for the burns and as I am trying not to cry you are complaining about your husband being mad you had to stay to fix it! You think that by including that piece of horrible customer service skills and insensitivity to what happened in your salon that I am attacking you personally?! Please. Take it as corrective criticism to change your behavior when in a situation similar to my experience, not to use some poor excuse to avoid owning up to poor customer service. Pro tip: unless you know the client personally-no politics, no religion, no derogatory personal conversation about your personal life. read more

I was shocked after getting my hair cut and colored by Heather, as the reviews of this salon were 4.5/5. This was not representative of the way I looked walking out. Heather made my hair look horribly streaky and unnatural, and used thinning shears that I had specifically asked her NOT to use. I looked a mess. Bottom Line Up Front: ZEN IS THE WORST HAIR SALON I'VE EVER BEEN TO! They screwed up my hair twice within 1 week and then refused to give me any refund. My experience is posted below, but the bottom line is that you should find a different salon! I have been getting my hair done for 10 years and I've never had such bad experiences with a salon/hairdresser. I went to Zen for the first time a couple of weeks ago because I wanted a salon that was closer to my house. During the consultation, Marissa (the hairdresser) asked me what I wanted done. I told her that I wanted a dramatic change to my hair color. I asked her for suggestions--the only stipulations were: a) I don't want any unnatural colors (blue, pink, etc.), and b) I want to keep some red in my hair, and c) I want a DRASTIC change that will be very noticeable. I asked her for some suggestions, and she had none to give me. This has never happened to me before. Hairdressers should be able to provide ideas/suggestions. Her response was that I should look through some magazines and point out what I would want. I flipped through the magazines, and came up with a few different ideas of what I would like. Again, I didn't care as long as it met my 3 criteria. Each picture I showed her, she made a face and said that I would have to go through a "double process" to get my hair like that. I have hair that is healthy and easy to color. I have gone from dark to light and light to dark countless times, and I've never had to go through a "double process." I was so sick of wasting time sitting there arguing with her, so I just said, "fine, do the double process." Over 3 hours later, the final product looked almost identical to the hair I walked in with. I spent $130 for this. I went home thinking it may look different in the light that I'm used to seeing it in. It wasn't. I called the owner, Leah, the next day, who had been in the salon when I was there. I told her that I was very unhappy because I asked for a "drastic" and "dramatic" change, and my hair looked exactly the same. I asked to have it fixed. She seemed put off and asked that I come in the next day with some pictures of what I want so that they can see what could be done. At this point, it became clear to me that these people are incapable coloring hair unless you show them EXACTLY what you want. I dug up an old picture of me when I had a whole head of blonde highlights and brought it in. Leah tried to put the blame on me and implied that I wanted one thing on Wednesday and want something completely different on Friday. In truth, I just wanted what I originally asked for. She made an appointment for me on Monday with Marissa again. Monday, Leah and Marissa sat me down and told me that doing highlights would damage my hair and they recommend just doing a clarifying treatment to "brighten up the color." Obviously they were just trying to get out of fixing what Marissa screwed up. I told them to do the highlights. I paid $130, so I deserve what I want. Marissa did the highlights and then Leah talked me into a "eratin treatment, which would minimize the damage of all the coloring. During that time, every hairdresser there came over to me and made comments like "is this the one you were telling me about?," or, "are you the one who got her hair done last week and now wants to go blonde?" It was as if I was an exhibit in a freak show! I was at the salon for over 3.5 hours, so I wouldn't even let them blow dry my hair. I just wanted to get out of there. The color was acceptable. It looked nothing like the picture I had showed them, but it looked fine. I tipped Marissa for her time and bought a deep conditioner at her recommendation. I ended up spending $70. When I got home, I blow-dried my own hair. When I looked in the mirror I wanted to scream. There was about half an inch or more between my scalp and where the highlights started. My roots were so noticeable. When I went back, I asked the first hairdresser I saw if she would look at my hair and judge by the roots how long it had been since I had the highlights done. She said "at least a month." I told her that I had them done there last week and I want a refund. She said Leah would call me. 2 days later, I got a call from the owner. I told her how bad the roots are and how angry I am that I was the recipient of such careless work. She defended Marissa and made dumb excuses like "sometimes the heat from your head causes the highlights to retract." She said things like "we did two services for you ffor you for the price of one," and, "nobody can make you happy." She ultimately offered to touch-up my roots. I told her that I would not allow anyone at her salon to touch my hair again since she thinks that it's acceptable for people to leave with enormous roots. I just wanted a partial refund--not even the whole thing. I spent $200 and 7 hours there within 1 week. She told me that their policy is that they do NOT give refunds. Love it here! All the stylists are so nice and friendly. I've seen a couple different girls and was pleased Every-Time. Front desk girls are very kind. Prices are about the same as everywhere else in the area. Overall I was very happy there and would recommend to a friend. read more

I do not recommend this place, because I saw my hairdresser named Tamara, she fried and damaged my hair while she laughed and saw other clients. I absolutely would never recommend this hairdresser. I think her license should be taken away. It took me more than a few years to get the damage out. I am a lifelong resident of Clifton Park and I know other people had also bad experiences with TAMARA, if only they spoke to me first. read more
