My son had his first haircut here at around 21 months. I didn't even have time to finish reading my son his story. They were prepared with either a booster or to let me sit and hold my son, and we had to do the second option. Patrick very kindly supplied a cape for me as well. As far as the cut, Patrick did a great job moving fast and doing it well. He talked us through options - it never occurred to me my toddler could have a style instead of just shorter hair, haha, until we got there - and we went with one we liked but wouldn't have thought possible for a toddler. Patrick made sure we were happy and supplied us with a first haircut certificate. My son was nervous at points, but never actually got upset. Patrick has a great temperament for dealing with parents and kids, and it was an awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone. For reference, my son's cut was $22 before tip.

It's easy to miss Patsy's Barber Shop if you're weaving through the traffic of State and Pearl. You have to know to take the right onto Howard Street and go slowly enough not to miss the white neon tubing that brightens the shop and casts just enough of its glow onto the sidewalk to let you see the barbers ply their trade. Patsy's opened in 1930 at the cusp of the Great Depression, when a proper haircut was a man's resume and the newspaper on the empty seat was the employment office. It was a family business, like many that had dotted the downtown and further south to the neighborhoods that would eventually be sacrificed to Nelson Rockefeller's sense of grandeur. William "Tragedy" Yager now presides over the memories absorbed into the mirrors and the padded chairs. Since 2006, he's followed in the footsteps of his great grandfather, a man who likely opened up shop as he always did on the day Japanese planes set off for infamy. And anyone who's had a seat in one of his chairs and a hot towel on their face knows that Tragedy didn't just inherit a trade; he inherited a love and a duty to everyone that crosses the threshold. A large man with a long, thick beard and a tapestry of tattoos lining both temples, he wouldn't strike you as a man you would want to meet in a dark alley. But again, the seat, the hot towel, two minutes in conversation, and you'll realize that he's exactly the man you would want to meet in a dark alley if your car broke down, if you were cold, hungry and scared, if everybody passed you by. Because there are certain things you can expect from those possessed of the instinct of leadership. But what you may not expect is that sometimes, the places where matters are truly decided accept walk-ins. Best barber I've seen in the capital district. Friendly, professional, and talented. I stopped in here for a beard trim to get my new beard off to a good start....and Jorge worked his magic to make it look great... Stopped back in again, the beard was getting shaggy, and the second time he did even better.. When I told him I was trying to grow out my hair and didn't want a cut now, he suggested that he just do the outline over my ears....and he did that as part of the beard trim. Third time I went there was just before Easter and I was expecting the place to be packed...but they were working on the street out front. Jorge was not there, but Sue was. She did what I asked and I had the best looking haircut I have gotten in years. Thank you Sue! The only drawback to this place is finding a nearby parking spot. I wouldn't even try to find one on Van Vranken, but I would try the cross streets on either side , especially the one between the meat market and the barbershop. Having to walk a little is a small price to pay for a great haircut! Don't come here if you are looking for an expensive, bad haircut. I don't think either Jorge or Sue could give a bad haircut if they tried. read more

Best barber shop in town. Sue and Jorge both do a fantastic job in delivering the haircut you want which for me is a high fade with a 2, 1, 0. I just moved to Scotia 9 months ago and Jorge was the first person I went to and stuck with him since. Previously when I lived elsewhere, I had a barber who cut my hair for 14 years. I was VERY happy and impressed of how similar Jorge cut my hair compared to my original barber and wound up looking much better than what I am used to. It's a relief as I am self conscious with my haircuts and if you are then you have no worries coming to Schenectady Barber Shop. Sue is great too. I let her cut my hair for her apprenticeship and she nailed it as well. It's awesome knowing that either barbers, Sue and Jorge, can cut your hair the way you want it. They are also very nice people and represent Schenectady quite well...even though i barely know them. Pleasant to talk to while getting your haircut. read more

This review is long overdue but defiently deserved. Jorge will provide you with an experience rather than just a great haircut. He is the first and only person I have ever really trusted with my hair and surely one of the most unique and positive characters you will ever encounter. I'm not one to recommend often and I have to tell you I only signed up for yelp to do just that. This place is amazing, I moved here about a year ago on military orders and tried a lot of barber shops over the first few months. Once I found this place About 9 months Ago, that was it. I bring my 4 years old son there for every single haircut, the owner truly cares about everyone and he truly cares about his community. I also get my haircuts there. If you do not check this place out you are doing yourself a big injustice. read more
