I didn't even have time to finish reading my son his story. They were prepared with either a booster or to let me sit and hold my son, and we had to do the second option. Patrick very kindly supplied a cape for me as well. As far as the cut, Patrick did a great job moving fast and doing it well. He talked us through options - it never occurred to me my toddler could have a style instead of just shorter hair, haha, until we got there - and we went with one we liked but wouldn't have thought possible for a toddler. Patrick made sure we were happy and supplied us with a first haircut certificate. My son was nervous at points, but never actually got upset. Patrick has a great temperament for dealing with parents and kids, and it was an awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone. For reference, my son's cut was $22 before tip.

I took the kids back for a couple of post-peak-pandemic haircuts, after a long enforced absence, and on the two occasions, only one of three hair cutters was masked, and that one had it below his nose. One of the cutters can't stop making political remarks, which is the last thing I want to be subjected to while getting a cut. And the quality of the cuts is way down since Mario himself was in the first chair. I had one kid who asked for something stylish for the grades he was in, and the hair cutter had no idea what to give him. He proceeeded to give him a "standard" hair cut. The other kid came off the chair with a small bald patch on one side of the back of his head and what looked like a side rat tail on the other. There's been 100% turnover in cutters; we wish Mario, Luis, Geno, and Michelle were back. Mario was a great guy, I wish him well in retirement, but the quality control is non-existent here.

Because it's often the case that the biggest machine lives and dies not by its most imposing part, but by the smallest pin in its center. It's easy to miss Patsy's Barber Shop if you're weaving through the traffic of State and Pearl. You have to know to take the right onto Howard Street and go slowly enough not to miss the white neon tubing that brightens the shop and casts just enough of its glow onto the sidewalk to let you see the barbers ply their trade. Patsy's opened in 1930 at the cusp of the Great Depression, when a proper haircut was a man's resume and the newspaper on the empty seat was the employment office. It was a family business, like many that had dotted the downtown and further south to the neighborhoods that would eventually be sacrificed to Nelson Rockefeller's sense of grandeur. William "Tragedy" Yager now presides over the memories absorbed into the mirrors and the padded chairs. Since 2006, he's followed in the footsteps of his great grandfather, a man who likely opened up shop as he always did on the day Japanese planes set off for infamy. And anyone who's had a seat in one of his chairs and a hot towel on their face knows that Tragedy didn't just inherit a trade; he inherited a love and a duty to everyone that crosses the threshold. A large man with a long, thick beard and a tapestry of tattoos lining both temples, he wouldn't strike you as a man you would want to meet in a dark alley. But again, the seat, the hot towel, two minutes in conversation, and you'll realize that he's exactly the man you would want to meet in a dark alley if your car broke down, if you were cold, hungry and scared, if everybody passed you by. Because there are certain things you can expect from those possessed of the instinct of leadership. But what you may not expect is that sometimes, the places where matters are truly decided accept walk-ins. Patsy's Barber Shop has two locations, 3 Howard Street in downtown Albany and Room 126 on the Concourse Level. Call for an appointment and check for hours. But I am moderating it based on what I experienced in the past, while keeping an open mind for raising it in the future. Rosibel was my stylist for my haircut. She did a great job all around. My shampoo was relaxing, I could see her focused on getting my hair right while she did the actual cutting, and her blow dry styling was wonderful. Even my husband noticed, and he doesn't really pick up on that stuff. I was so happy with how my hair looked, it felt like a shame that I was just going home, haha. I wanted to show it off, and that is not my typical post-haircut mood.
