I didn't even have time to finish reading my son his story. They were prepared with either a booster or to let me sit and hold my son, and we had to do the second option. Patrick very kindly supplied a cape for me as well. As far as the cut, Patrick did a great job moving fast and doing it well. He talked us through options - it never occurred to me my toddler could have a style instead of just shorter hair, haha, until we got there - and we went with one we liked but wouldn't have thought possible for a toddler. Patrick made sure we were happy and supplied us with a first haircut certificate. My son was nervous at points, but never actually got upset. Patrick has a great temperament for dealing with parents and kids, and it was an awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone. For reference, my son's cut was $22 before tip.

It's easy to miss Patsy's Barber Shop if you're weaving through the traffic of State and Pearl. You have to know to take the right onto Howard Street and go slowly enough not to miss the white neon tubing that brightens the shop and casts just enough of its glow onto the sidewalk to let you see the barbers ply their trade. Patsy's opened in 1930 at the cusp of the Great Depression, when a proper haircut was a man's resume and the newspaper on the empty seat was the employment office. It was a family business, like many that had dotted the downtown and further south to the neighborhoods that would eventually be sacrificed to Nelson Rockefeller's sense of grandeur. William "Tragedy" Yager now presides over the memories absorbed into the mirrors and the padded chairs. Since 2006, he's followed in the footsteps of his great grandfather, a man who likely opened up shop as he always did on the day Japanese planes set off for infamy. And anyone who's had a seat in one of his chairs and a hot towel on their face knows that Tragedy didn't just inherit a trade; he inherited a love and a duty to everyone that crosses the threshold. A large man with a long, thick beard and a tapestry of tattoos lining both temples, he wouldn't strike you as a man you would want to meet in a dark alley. But again, the seat, the hot towel, two minutes in conversation, and you'll realize that he's exactly the man you would want to meet in a dark alley if your car broke down, if you were cold, hungry and scared, if everybody passed you by. Because there are certain things you can expect from those possessed of the instinct of leadership. But what you may not expect is that sometimes, the places where matters are truly decided accept walk-ins. Headliners fits the bill when it comes to fun and friendly atmospheres, but most importantly the barbers who work there treat you like your a regular even when it's your first time in that chair. Since my first cut their roughly 2 years ago I have never so much as thought to go any where else. I genuinely enjoy my monthly cut and look forward to going in the shop. In fact if it were up to me and if my hair grew fast enough you'd see me in "Headliners" every week. I highly suggest seeing Jose Martinez for a guaranteed great overall experience. It's a pleasure to watch her work, and we've never had a bad cut from her. I particularly appreciate the ease with which she works with my younger child, who was previously nervous and very anxious about having his hair cut, but who has bonded with her in a way that puts him completely at ease. He's even *asked* to come get his hair cut, which is new. Her colleague cut my other kid's hair and did an outstanding job, clearly adjusting to his head and his personality as he went. Five stars to both of them. The new digs are in the old weird giftshop that was here, and having seen that, I appreciate how nicely it's been fixed up. It's simple, long bowling-alley style, small waiting area in front and the barber chairs down one side. They keep the TV on the DIY channels, which is excellent (I really dislike having news channels thrust upon me when at the barber's). Cash only, but they have lollipops!
