Driving along the spectacular southern Galicia country road from Viana to Ourense, when our in the…read moresticks, opposite an 18th century working church, we stopped at Bar Irene in Larouco for the best country lunch and the warmest welcome from the proprietor, a large smiling Galician woman. There was no menu, she just sat us down along with the locals, and served us fish & bean soup with bread. We thought that hearty dish might be all of it until we noticed she'd also set down, by the soup spoon, a fork and knife. So wisely, we left room for another course, and sure enough, fish and bean soup was whisked away and out came a delicious beef stew with roasted potatoes. After that, there was a voice of cake or ice cream, which came as a tri-flavored chocolate vanilla nata slice of heaven. After that, a tiny but intense expression. For the whopping sum of 9 Euros, or about $12!! Stop here if you can, it is well worth it, not just the food, but the welcome, the view, the bonhomie!
