This review is for the Zapien's Salon at Lake Oconee. I assume the Zapien's in Atlanta is substantially the same. What is Zapien's like? On the one hand, it is like coming to see friends. On the other hand, it is like stepping through a door and into a fashion show, complete with models, excited chatter, and glamor. In short, it has a terrific ambiance. When I enter, I check in at the desk. They remember my name. They bring me coffee and remember how I like it. There is not much waiting; Norman, who is both my stylist and the owner, comes up front to get me within a couple of minutes after I arrive. A Zapien's stylist doesn't begin with coloring or cutting. Instead, the stylist looks the client over like Michelangelo examining a new model. The stylist determines features that need emphasizing or de-emphasizing, the optimal shape and length for the hair, and (if the customer wants color, as I do), the optimal color. Then, the stylist discusses his or her impressions with the client. The stylist and client agree, and then the artistry begins. There's no need to go into the details of a cut and color. Suffice it to say that many people (the stylist, the color assistant, the wash assistant, the scheduler, and so on) have a role in helping the client, every one of them knows what they are doing, and every one of them executes to perfection. Zapien's is about more than hair: it is about making the client look and feel great. As one example, I have always had a ruddy complexion. I asked Norman whether he had any suggestions for hiding the redness. He looked me over (Michelangelo again) and gave me a suggestion I had never thought of. It was a Godsend: it worked perfectly. I will sum my experiences up like this: How good is Zapien's? So good that I start looking forward to my appointment three days before it is scheduled. I highly recommend. read more

Amanda at zapiens is amazing. I'm new to the area so I tried her out with the Groupon and i am so happy i did. She had amazing reviews and it's no wonder why. I really did my research before choosing her and I can't be more thankful to have had her as my stylist. Amanda cares about what you want done to your hair and listens. I first visited Zapien's when I was still living in Atlanta. I wanted to add some highlights to my dark Asian hair and wanted to try out a new place. I found Zapien's while perusing Groupon and gave Amanda a shot. She is WONDERFUL. Talk about skills in dealing with dark, dye resistant hair. She was able to add dimensions to my hair without damaging it. Even though I now live a state away, I made time to go back to her to get my hair done when I wanted another change to my hair. Norman first cut my hair when I was 15. When I was 21, he suggested I'd make a good redhead, and mixed up a henna, which gave me the perfect auburn mop of curls. I've been a redhead ever since. I live in NYC, and just found him again when I was in town - and now, that's it: only Norman is cutting my hair. I missed my last appointment because I was helping my Mom move- and so it's way overdue for a cut - and it STILL looks amazing. I have never seen anyone who can cut curly hair like he can. I am so grateful to Groupon for introducing me to this gem of a salon in Buckhead. You know you're in for a great experience when you walk in and your stylist tells you that they are offering free manicures courtesy of the nail salon next door in honor of Valentine's day... The space is bright and very open with the styling chairs situated around the room in a semi circle, and walls of mirrors lining the walls. Eric is absolutely fabulous. He has so much hair wisdom, he's as pleasant as can be, and he made me love my hair again (after a not-so-nice perm experience at a salon in Maryland a few months back). I explained to him exactly what I didn't like about my hair (too frizzy, difficult to straighten, weak), and he offered some great tips about how to treat it and make it better. He did a moisturizing treatment and partial foil highlight, and he made my hair look much healthier than when I walked in. Although the regular services are a bit pricey, I feel like it will definitely be worth it to go back and see Eric! read more

I went to Amanda to get silvery blonde/very light lavender hair (my hair is naturally thick and dark brown). She is the only stylist who was able to blend both my natural color and this new bright color with highlights, plus it isn't brassy in the slightest (which always happens with my hair). She ended up making a mastermind cocktail of hair dye and lavender toner to take out the brassy undertones! Followed the amazing Charles Farlow to this salon and was delighted on my first visit. The salon is bright, cheerful and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Charles treated my hair with the George Michael Deep Conditioning Protein treatment for my 3rd time and my hair is loving it! I have become a walking billboard for Charles since I get compliments on my hair all the time now. I've even had friends tell me "what are you doing to your hair? It looks fabulous!". If you want long healthy hair, the George Michael Conditioning treatment every 3 months with Charles is a must! I did buy the Groupon, but I was also referred by a friend who sees Melissa regularly. I was able to get an appointment in a reasonable amount of time (~1 week), the salon has ample parking, easy to find, the staff was really nice when I scheduled, etc. Melissa was great! She talked to me for a good 10 minutes before she even washed my hair to make sure she new what I was expecting and she told me what she thought would work and what wouldn't. We made a "game plan" for my hair over the next few months, because I'm trying to grow out a previous, bad haircut. Overall, I was really impressed with Melissa and the salon. I met the owner, Norman, as well. He was very nice! He let me know they're open late during the week, offered me coffee, and was even sweeping the floor! I will definitely be back! read more

I found an ad on Half Off Depot for services with Melissa Purvis so I contacted her. I mentioned the Half Off deal to schedule an appointment. The first time she said she was busy and said she'd call back, but never did. So I called back later and it went to voicemail. She never called back. I understand that you may be busy, but that is horrible customer service, before your customer even sets foot into the salon. A customer should never have to chase the provider. There are plenty of other salons in Atlanta. I guess your business is doing well and you don't need more clients. Nonetheless, your actions are a bad reflection on your business ethics and consideration of future customers. I would never go here. Don't bother calling Melissa Purvis because she will cut you off and never call you back. read more

I had hoped that the color wasn't as bad as I thought it was, but after getting my friends' opinions, I ended up getting color correction at another salon. Also, the cut wasn't great either. It didn't seem as bad at first, but it didn't grow out well, and whatever the stylist did to "add texture" to the layers seems to have damaged the hair. read more

If I could I would give a negative one review for this salon! If you have any sense you will not purchase this Groupon (please save your money) b/c they will give you HORRIBLE customer service. I purchased the Groupon and was treated inferior by the receptionist. After booking a color and cut with no problem and being asked, I said I have a Groupon then got the "oh" please hold! He came back on the line and somehow the colorist AND stylist I had just booked with wasn't available for my set appointment. I was given a horrible time mid week. I explained I worked and was unable to come in at that time, I was then booked for a colorist and stylist on on my original date different time, 3:00pm. On Sat I get a call an hour and 15 minutes before my appointment saying I they couldn't take me today, no options on seeing someone b/c I wasn't a regular client. HORRIBLE customer service, HORRIBLE! Trust me you will only be disappointed by them calling an hour and 1/2 before the appointment the day of saying they can't take you unless you are a regular! I called the salon back 3 times that day and received no answer, I am wondering if they have caller ID. read more

WOW WOW WOW. I have been struggling to find a great colorist for years. My image is my job and hair color and cut is very important. Deanna Stanfeild at Zapiens was the first person who actually got it right THE FIRST TIME. We had a quick consultation and that is all she needed. On top of that, everyone that works there makes you feel immediately at home. The owner always remembers me and makes it a point to come and say hello. This is the best salon in Atlanta in my opinion and I would recommend it to EVERYONE. These hair stylist really are artists. read more

I just went to this salon after purchasing a groupon deal for a $29 haircut. I read the fine print in which it stated there would be an additional fee for hair longer than shoulder length for COLOR. Nowhere did it mention an additional fee for cut. The stylist Melissa flatly said it applied for cut too once I was there and seated. Both she and the other male stylist working there were so snooty and uninterested in apologizing for the misunderstanding even after I specifically pulled up the fine print and showed her myself. If You're going to make such a ridiculous rule about adding an extra $25 for cutting hair that's only an inch or two past your shoulders, at least make sure your perfectly clear about it in your precious "fine print." I would definetly recommend Alexandar or Olivia Todd salons over this one, they were always so warm and welcoming there. read more

I've been going to Conrad Heller for my cut and color for over a year now and could not be happier. My Mom has also been seeing him for the same services at the Greensboro location. I highly recommend his work. We both always get compliments on our hair and its all due to his skills! I am also notorious for needing a last minute appointment and she always finds somewhere to accommodate me, she has even stayed late for me before.
