I discovered Previewmod after attending a Yelp event that was held a few doors down. As soon as I came in I was greeted a friendly hello. I loved exploring the small but carefully curated store. They had so many interesting furniture pieces, art, home decor, and even clothing and jewelry. My favorite piece was a marshmallow sofa by Herman Miller in bright red from 1956. It was selling for $3,895 which seems quite expensive but mid century modern is very popular today. Like in all things it is always best to do your research before buying. I did like that they had a lot of things I had never seen before anywhere else and would be very much at home on the set of I Love Lucy. As a fan of history and architecture, this store was a fun discovery.

It's a furniture design I love and know a little bit about, but being only slightly knowledgeable about such things is akin to have no knowledge at all, since it is so unique, somewhat specialized and only attracts a small but avid following. Since Previewmod is in the process of remodeling, I'm hesitant to rate it but some of the pieces they had on display were real gems but, of course, at gem prices such as a Charles Eames (circa mid 1960's) chair. Though listed at a price of $4,200 which one might at first blush consider high, it along with the condition of it actually represents a price I would consider to be somewhere around $600 below the prevailing retail market; hence, a pretty good deal. Beyond their store front, Previewmod also has one of the better such web sites I've seen. If you're really into furnishings of this type, and really only if you're into them, it's a pretty good store in comparison to other stores I've visited that specialize in similar such furnishings.

There is a small parking lot on the side of the building. Unfortunately I had a very disappointing visit to Barber Jo Collectibles which started at the front door where I was told I had to put a mask on even though every other business in Florida stopped requiring masks for many months now. Once inside it looks like this business belongs to a hoarder. You can barely navigate the aisles crammed from floor to ceiling. There were interesting things but nothing was priced. I inquired about a mineral oil lamp I was curious about but couldn't get any indication of a price. I doubt it could have been reached anyway. The best thing I got out of this visit was the sales person telling me to go to the Cooper City Antique Mall which I did and was actually able to buy a few things. This place seems more like a museum for the items belonging to Barbee Jo. If you want to just look and you are able bodied then by all means come for a look but remember a mask. My experience was that they did not give off the feeling of actually wanting to sell anything.

I finally had a few hours off from school one day and I noticed as I drove by that there were some signs out and bingo I finally hit them while they were open. Once you park just look for the purple door which is the entrance to the shop. The thrift store is part of the Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church and School which has a long history in the North Ft. Lauderdale area. The church opened in the early 1960's, and now they have a thriving church, K-8 school and an early childhood center. Their mission "is to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our local community by providing opportunities for individuals to Learn about God's Love and in turn Live out that Love." Proceeds from the thrift store help to fund the church ministries. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the sweetest ladies. They were having a sale and anything that was priced over $1 was half off. Everything in the store was inexpensive anyway and with the additional sale they were practically giving it away. The thrift store is one room but they had it packed with a little bit of everything including books, clothes, games, collectibles, dishes, shoes, accessories, lamps, linens, baskets and more. There was even a wedding dress. There was a beautiful set of green dishes complete with glasses. It was a bit of a treasure hunt to try and see everything they had. With the inexpensive prices this thrift store is ideal for anyone starting out or starting over. Or maybe you will luck out and find that certain something you have been missing. However, there is a sign out front on the street saying "thrift". There's a salon and a convenience store in the same building. Located on the east side of the road, there are a few parking spaces right out front. Inside, there are racks of clothing --mainly -- and one small bookcase with books, a shelf of similar blue and white statues, a few pieces of jewelry and some accessories. Along one wall is a display of various style and color hats. The lady running the store was very nice. I was hoping to find something I could buy just to be supportive. If you like "vintage" (old) clothes, etc. and you love digging through thrift stores, add this new place to your list -- but only if you're on the area.
