The dog area at Halvorson Park has more features to play with your dogs. Still, with the beach, a chance for some good birding and pleasant walking makes the Paws and Play Park worthy of a visit. The main attraction here is the lake, and the people you will meet.

The bathrooms are open when the weather relents. The star of the park is the dog areas. There are two of these. One for dogs under 35 pounds and an area for dogs bigger than that. While I was there two very friendly dogs came to the fence and snurfed at me. Their owner was happily seated a bit away. This dog park was installed in 2019. It is brand new with adequate fencing and sturdy secure gates. You go in the outer gate and then through an inner gate for extra security. There are various training structures, such as ramps and tunnels. There is one large area that is undesignated for open activities. Other than playing ball or picnicking, the dog park is the star of the show here. If you have an energetic dog or dogs that need to run off some steam it would behoove you to bring them to this park. It's a safe park in a safe city...enjoy

From the city's web-site…read more This 3.72 acre park was originally known as the North Side Park It was renamed Union Park in recognition of the 2,467 men who served on active duty during the Civil War. Marches and drills for volunteer Union soldiers were held at the park beginning in April of 1861. On September 20, 1939, a Civil War cannon was donated by W.R.C. It was unveiled by Jane Kress whose mother gave a hand-sewn flag to departing Civil War soldiers. The Manitowoc County Historical Society raised funds to erect a historical marker commemorating the site of the training grounds for the volunteers who left for the Civil War in Manitowoc County. This marker was dedicated on June 17, 1997 during a ceremony which included a pie and ice cream social. Restroom facilities for the park were completed in December of 1992. A nice little park with open areas with large trees. Dogs are allowed. There is a small playground and a large open area for volleyball, croquet and other field games. Very neat and trim, not wild at all.

He's snoring his head off right now after running around like a madman in the small stuff area with his new BFF Charlie the Corgi! He also had fun in the big dog area with Dozer who really wanted to play! It was nice to be around people who were attentive to their fur babies vs walking trails with headphones on ignoring dogs that run wild in wooded off leash parks. I recently had a bad encounter with dogs jumping on me and dashing at my smaller dog. He is my service dog because I have a neurological disorder that causes me to lose my balance and fall. It's really irritating when people let their big dogs dash, run, and jump throughout a park and they are nowhere near to correct the dog. In this park, that can't happen because the area is more of an exercise area. It's enclosed but large enough for the dogs to really have fun chasing, tumbling, and running. The large dog area has a few challenge obstacles inside but nothing to obstruct ball tossing or free play. Within the play area, there are no trees for sugar to hide and dash at the unsuspecting passersby. Every parent can't see his/her baby and hold them accountable for good behavior! Outside the enclosures, there are many trails for those who want 1:1 encounters with their fur babies and nature. I walked the trail first with my dog. We love walking along trails. I give him plenty of time to sniff everything and I let him direct the adventure. Then, we went to the fenced area for some socializing (a.k.a. play). He had a great time and so did I. There are signs up that indicate there are fees to use this park. I'm not sure if that's still the case. So check it out before you go. The gates were up and open when I arrived but if there's a fee, I would say it's well worth it! This park was clean and attractive. It would be a great place for families, couples, singles, disabled, and dogs!!! We felt centered and calm when we left and can't wait to visit again!

We hike the many trails that run through the park, one of which has a good view of the limestone escarpment that High Cliff is named for. The observation tower offers a panoramic view of Lake Winnebago. We come here enough that it is worth getting a season park pass.
