We decided to stay local this Record Store Day, an event each year where artists release exclusive,…read morecollector vinyl that can only be purchased in local record shops. For this event, the store was open with extended hours starting at 8am. We arrived early to have a good spot in line with other record connoisseurs. Upon opening, the staff came out to welcome everyone who had waited hours for opening and thanked each of us. When we got inside, my dad and I were able to browse through the RSD collections in nicely alphabetized bins. The event was nicely organized and patrons were filed in calmly and quickly. We were able to get everything we had hoped to purchase for RSD-- and more. It was truly such a great time, and my dad and I enjoyed making memories at this event together. While inside, we had the honor of talking to Charlie behind the counter. He is truly the face of Variety Records making us feel welcome, sharing his knowledge for not only Vinyl but the ins-and-outs of Record Store Day, and managing to still converse with each customer during what I would assume to be their busiest day of the year. He was fabulous and even remembered us the next time we came in the shop. They have a wide variety of new, used, and new-vintage vinyl records and cds. We left with seven albums combined and both found things we were excited to listen to. We will be back soon!

I continued in and was met with the lovely smiles and happiness of the owners. They were just opening and doing some last minute arrangements for the FCBD (Free Comic Book Day.) They had albums and comics and more. And rarely priced at that. I picked up a couple albums that I had been looking for and a few comics as well. He even gave me info on an album that I had been searching for my brother and he pointed me in the right direction. I appreciate that. Going to make this spot my local comic and record shop. So this is a massive bookstore, music store, video store, toy store that specializes in buying used items and reselling them. So if you have an aversion to musty dirty used items, this is not your place. Which I happen to have. However, this is not McKay's fault. It is a great place to offload things you don't need and get a little cash on the side. I have a touch of sensory bias, which is why it's difficult for me to enjoy it. But I totally understand why others do. If you are planning on selling stuff, make sure you get there early. If not, when they open there will be a line not of people wanting to sell stuff just people wanting to get in there to check out anything new that came in the night before. It is always busy so do not expect to come and it not be packed. If that is an issue for you probably not your place. But a big plus is the parking lot is absolutely massive. You will find a parking spot regardless of how busy it is. And to that I give it five stars.

A few years ago they took over the old church in East Nashville where they house their collection of wonders. As you enter the front door to the right, you'll find the box sets, limited editions and record day specials, both in vinyl and cds. The middle is predominantly vinyl and the left are the cds, both new and used. At the far end of the building where the altar would have been is now a stage where they sometimes showcase mini concerts, cd release parties, and book signings. Downstairs you'll find a good selection of books concerning music, be it country, rock, blues, folk or jazz. There's biographies history and style, again both new or used. Against the side wall there's a huge variety of jazz and classical. They give you a very fair trade-in value on used books, cds, and vinyls. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. If you've never been there, you owe it to yourself to go and spend a couple hours!
