A year ago there were no Polish shops in Chorlton. Now there are two, and numerous other shops which stock Polish produce. There has been a definite increase in men walking down my road with a Tyskie in hand at 10am. The Poles are here, and they need feeding!
Zabka, the second Polish shop to open, is tucked away between greengrocers and chemists in Chorlton Place. It is run by Poles predominantly for Poles. The interior looks distinctly Polish (akin to an English corner shop in the 1970s), and unlike the other Polish shop Wisla, this one is not licensed. Don't let this put you off. What this shop does better than no other is pierogi.
The shop's window advert (handwritten on paper with a marker pen) translates pierogi as dumplings, but for those who aren't familiar with this Polish staple, they are little folded pockets of dough (which look a bit like ravioli) stuffed with goodies such as meat, cheese, onions, spinach, mushrooms and even strawberry or cherry. They are really quick and simple to cook, and therefore I would recommend Zabka to Poles, and Brits who would like a break from Indian and Chinese cuisine (although I can't imagine that many Polish restaurants will crop up in Manchester!). read more
