Our family is in love with this dojo. We have had our son studying karate here for almost 3 years now. Sensei Kirk is an amazing instructor. He teaches the kids classes. Not only is Sensei Kirk a strong example for discipline and demonstrating Shaolin Kenpo techniques, but he is so wonderful with children and understands how to incorporate fun in all of his classes. There are more instructors here that are so awesome! Sensei Hannah is my son's private lesson coach. He sees her once a week for 30 mins of one on one training. She is so lovely, fierce, thorough and clear with techniques. He adores Sensei Hannah! There are many children and adults who have been committed to this dojo for many years. Z-Ultimate has become a family for all of us because we see each other 3-4 times a week for years. My son has grown into a confident and strong boy since studying karate. The sole purpose of his time spent studying this art will help shape his future. read more

My daughter has been attending this dojo since she was 5 years old. She is now 8 and a blue belt. Time flies. My daughter's lessons are usually with Sensei Devon and he's really patient, kind, and is able to explain the techniques to her in a way she can understand. Master Bryan is also great with her as well. During the height of covid and currently, I'm grateful how they made ways for my daughter to stay safe and still get lessons and test for the next belt due to covid concerns. read more

I needed a few months and maybe covid-19 to finally come around and give a review of this specific location. Firstly I'd like to say that I started with trial lessons, and I have 2 children age 5yrs old and 4yrs old at the time that were very enthusiastic to attend their lessons. The experience is phenomenal and very motivating for any parent to see their children do something new and work hard. The second thing I need to make note of is that my eldest is special needs on the autism Spectrum Disorder as well as ADHD. During our trial, the instructors truly invested their time and knowledge to understand each of my children and access their abilities to learn the martial arts. The feedback was very detailed. Sensei Hannah at the time was very patient and Sensei Devon was very thorough with details and techniques. My daughter was assessed to gain the most benefits with private lessons understandably, while my son at the time although young was assessed to be ready to start Kung Fu and even join the group classes. These are fair decisions. So in short I signed my son for the monthly fee and lessons, while I opted out for my daughter as her level of maturity is still underdeveloped. Now the real test is how the school adjusts during the lock down and what they offered. Although we did not have group classes, we maintained an hr of private lessons which more or less made up for the group lessons through quality of lessons. They were weekly on zoom and they are intensive and everything you'd expect from a regular class. Sensei Devon is very kind, discipline and understanding of my child's individual needs. The most important part is that he was willing to accommodate during rescheduling and that alone gives this school a 5 stars. Everyone hates to miss out on lessons and feel their money is wasted, but at this school so far we do our best to be respectful and attend and the Sensei's do their best to deliver their time as well. In other words you will not be lost or even feel lost in a school when you have this student to teacher private lessons. One private lesson can make up for 3 group lessons if done right. Finally Sensei Devon is very good, he's a good instructor and someone you will want your child to learn from. I have also met Sensei/Master Bryan on rare occasions and he is also very pleasant to interact with. I also want to make a note that during their promotions he was readily available to discuss the flexible start times of our contract and what worked for our family. It's good to have open communication with the top man and the best way to establish a long term business relationship. The location of the school as well as their back parking is ample so it's also very convenient. If you send your child here for an hr you can go grocery shopping or next door for a 1hr foot massage or shopping at Daiso or Sally's beauty. Thank god for the best location possible for a kungfu school could possibly be! And there's Starbucks and Arby's too! read more

Our kids (1 on the spectrum) have been training here for close to 2 years. Their instructors have been a great source of help to both of them; not only in karate instruction but with school and life in general. We appreciate all of the discipline and instruction provided to them. I've trained just a few times now myself (30 day FREE trial) and I love it! If you want an amazing workout, look no further - no gym needed. The semi annual tournaments are AWESOME! This is a family style environment... it's worth it! read more

Z-Ultimate Self Defense Studios - Self-defense Classes Near Me - Lakewood, California

I've been training at Z-Ultimate for almost 6 years now. It has kept me in great shape, boosted my confidence, and given me a great outlet for my stress. The instructors are awesome and they take their time with every student. read more

I enrolled in this martial arts studio as a tool to develop my self defense skills, not necessarily to obtain any given belt. I would definitely give the school a 5 star rating. The staff are consummate professionals and very polite. This is not some studio to just make a bunch of bullies or street fighters. Their senior instructor Brian is a very nice person and very patient. He is obviously an expert in his field and takes the art very seriously. He and his staff create a comfortable and family like environment. They all are serious into the martial art. They accommodate people with physical handicaps and of all age groups. I would recommend this studio if you are looking for serious self protection skills for adults. read more

When I passed by the dojo and saw they had a 30 day trial , I decided to sign my son and his friend up. They attend attended a total of two private lessons and 3 group classes. When I spoke to the Instructor Kirk Holguin, he told me there was no obligation or pressure to sign up. I wanted to try the 30 days to see if the boys would make a commitment, if we were going to invest in signing them both up. So I was curious and the day of their private lesson I asked Mr. Holguin, which was Tuesday, July 4th what was the cost to sign the boys. He told me $395 registration fee and $225 a month. I mentioned I would let him know next class time. He told me to come in the next day which was yesterday Wednesday, July 5th and I agreed. So yesterday we get there and the boys are excited to attend class and eager to start the program. They were looking forward to class. We arrived 10 minutes earlier and I attempted to say hello to the instructor but I noticed he was busy with a private lesson which should end at 5 since the class starts at that time. Kids started arriving and entering the dojo, I told the boys to go and follow since they were still under the 30 day trial and it was group class. I noticed he didn't acknowledge the boys (he didn't acknowledge me either the whole time we were there either) but a few minutes later tells them to exit out of the dojo. They seemed confused! I was confused as they were!!?? Parents arrive with their kids and the instructor acknowledges all the parents, kids and starts conversations and asked them about their 4th of July, how it went. But Not once did he attempted to talk to my boys or even me for that matter. He even playfully flirted with one the parents, and kept complementing how beautiful she looked and how he liked the dress but thought black was not the right choice, since it was too hot out! I believe as a professional instructor that is not acceptable behavior or conversation to be had in front of the parents or the kids. That Being said, the kids start lining up and class begins and he still hasn't called them to class. I was in shocked. They tell me, "they feel awkward and are asking why did the instructor dismissed them and ignored them!?!?" So I decided to give him a couple of more minutes to see if he would call the boys and as soon as it 5:14 we left the dojo. In addition when we get in the car the boys start talking and tell each other how funny it was that the instructor had the Hots for one of the mom's!!! If I noticed the manner the instructor was acting in front of this parent and even my kids noticed it. Proves to me that it was such unprofessional behavior and conversation to be had at that time. I am disappointed, upset and even waited a day to write review but as I ponder upon which transpired. It still makes me feel a uncomfortable and vexed. That is the reason I'm writing this review. To warn other parents how deceptive the 30 day trial is and it's a great offer but as soon as you ask about the program and if you don't jump to sign them up right away, they treat you with disregard and disrespect. I am glad I didn't commit to the 12 month program he recommended. I will take my business elsewhere. read more
