An unexpected little Japanese place with high ambition…read more The staff here was lovely, took care of our jackets at the door and the host came over to chat with us for a bit to make us feel welcome. We came for dinner on a Monday and concluded this might be a better place for drinks at the end of a week? The bar looked like the better place to hang with it sunk down seating and leafy drinks, than the glass 90s cafe-style tables. Two areas in the restaurant had kneeling style seating and yes- there is a samurai statue. The interior here is impossible to photograph with a cellphone - red carpet and mirrors top to bottom! Everywhere - Even the bathroom :) now this might sound like a bad idea but it does manage to make the space unique. So to the food. The prix fixe menus are steep: 500-1200 per head. Wine is at 350-500. And unfortunately, although filling, not very exciting. Somehow the food reminded me more of Chinese than Japanese? More fat that crisp flavor and texture: Edamame in butter, tempura shrimp drenched in mayo and so on. The salmon sushi got the highest and only praise of the total 12 dishes we tried. Oh, a last note- don't miss out on the all mirror bathroom and bathtub sized waterfall basin - you will leave wishing you had a better camera and flash on you phone!

On paper Hai must be considered one of the most promising Japanese restaurants in Malmö. The large…read moremenu offers a great variety and selection of dishes that look appealing, exciting and interesting however the way the kitchen executes the dishes is such a let down. In our chase for the best sushi in Malmö we came across Hai. A place that looked to have all the elements necessary to be among the main contenders but surprisingly as well as sadly came up very short. What is perfect and promising here is the ambiance, the settings, the area, the menu and the creativity. What make is a let down is the kitchen under-performing in terms of quality control and "know how" as well as the inattentive service staff. At the time of our visit the fish was not as fresh as it should have been, nor had it the right temperature. Regardless of how hot it is outside the fish, in this case uneven cuts of it, should not be hotter than a normal room temperature! The rice was overcooked and bland meaning not enough vinegared. The Unagi nigiri was chewy and somewhat rough meaning either it was not lightly seared or as fresh as it should have been. We all tend to agree it was not lightly seared due the fact that the seared tuna nigiri also looked more blackened than seared. In order to get some water to the table as well as ordering a coke we had to call upon the staff 3 times and the beverages were not even served to the table at the same time. Sadly the overall experience became even worse considering the prices Hai asks its costumers to pay.

This is a great place to eat sushi in Malmö. I can be very untrusting of sushi places abroad so it…read morewas a pleasant find. Hai serves up great traditional sushi offerings with a few specialties. Good environment, indoor and outdoor seating, parking area in front, and near the famous walking strip mall area in Malmö. Take a look at the Red Dragon roll.

When In Sweden, when in Lund and most importantly when in raw-fish abstinent the best place to get…read moreyou fixed is at Zen Sushi & Tea! This is where you want to go for the best as well as affordable & reliable SH#@ or fix! I'll only recommend two sushi joints in Lund! One appeals to the green and environmentally-correct personality of mine, needless to say aside from great taste, value and quality! The other, Zen Sushi & Tea is where I go to silence the cravings that might not be so attuned to the red fish list! Occasionally I can't help myself wanting to enjoy species such as tuna and prawns! Also I might add that the black & white design is charming as well as sober and suiting! Now to why this place is a (guilty) pleasure of mine; Nigiri pillows that will not fall apart, go ahead laugh but remember this is Sweden we do frequently mess up with the rice. The rice pillows are well-seasoned and in good sweet contra sour- harmony. Fresh fish slices that are cut perfectly thick or thin depending on whether your pleasure happens to be Sashimi or Nigiri! The usual Cali or salmon rolls are spot on, but they do offer Makis with twists and I do urge you to order such. I for one love the shake garlic roll that is made with garlic marinated salmon as well as spring onion which adds a great texture to the roll. Another roll to love, depending on how one might feel about Saffron, is the Golden Gate Roll. The ironic taste of the Saffron adds another dimension to the sweetness of prawns and avocado! I do also love the spicy tuna roll which get its zing from the Kimchi-mayo (chili & garlic) and especially when upgraded to the inferno version which is grilled and even hotter. If you, much like me, think highly of lemon, be sure to try the Lemon Suprise Roll where you get lemon marinated prawns as well as lemon zest, the fusion in between the citrus and nutishness from the sesame seeds is exciting! To be honest the biggest problem I have with Zen is the lack of tofu and leek in the ever so too zingy or chili-spicy Miso soup. I love Zens innovation abilities but one this one they gone a little too far. The saltiness together with the smokey flavor accompanied with this much chili doesn't add or improve the soup. It becomes ratter an unpleasant roller coaster ride on the taste buds! Also Zen offers only 3 hot dishes and they nowhere near the sushi served in terms of quality, authenticity and value. The Yakiniku beef neither is tender nor offers the required depth. Furthermore the reason behind added Kimchi-mayo to the dish is a mystery to me! I would also have liked Zen even more if the fish selection wasn't this limited and predictable. Nevertheless as long as you are at Zen to get help with your raw fish cravings you wont find many other words best to describe it than; bravo, bravo and bravo!
