It's now been a year since I started at YuBalance and I'm still on a steady 3x/week workout schedule. I have never, in my life, had a consistent exercise routine I was able to stick to for a year. More than that, I look forward to it and I often find myself with extra energy during the sessions. The coaches at YuBalance taught me a vocabulary of exercises, and every month they mix them up a bit so you don't get too used to anything. But there's a lot to appreciate when you know the moves. Yes, you may have done a forward or backward lunge many times, but how deep is your lunge? How heavy are the dumbbells you're using, how good is your balance? I love the fact that like Bikram, once you know the core moves, your workout can really focus on form and strength, rather than thinking, "am I doing this right?" When you know an exercise, you can scale it up to be challenging and the instructors will tell you how to do that. There are still two 30lb dumbbells I'm nowhere close to conquering (yet). I'm not the lightest I've ever been (that has a lot to do with nutrition), but I'm the strongest I've ever been, and I look better than I've ever looked. At 57, being fit is really important and the core strength I've gotten from YuBalance is a godsend. I'm counting on this to keep me independent as I age. Finally, the instructors have such a great attitude. They have a sense of humor, they introduce me to new music, and are all very encouraging of my progress. I absolutely LOVE YuBalance! I started a over year ago, with a Black Friday package that included 2 months of 1:1 training, and then transitioned to the group classes. I love the variety of the workouts and the music that really motivates you to push yourself. I love that I don't have to think about anything. I just show up and know that I've gotten a great work out (full-body, or whatever the focus was for that class). There is always a good mix of cardio that helps get your heart rate up. The windows are amazing for people watching (or keeping an eye on your bike locked out front!). The instructors are all really well trained and each bring a unique vibe. They also check in with you after class and see how you're doing. Jelani has the best workouts and the music matches so perfectly to all the exercises. Each time I am always impressed! Stefania has such great positive energy, and has often led all female classes which always feels very empowering! I can really tell the difference in my strength as a result of the past year (but even started feeling a difference in the first few months). Planks don't feel as challenging, and my toddlers feel lighter now when I pick them up (and no, they definitely did not lose weight!). Began coming here after taking a 1 year Covid hiatus from working out (yikes) - since for me, nothing replaces group fitness and in person in terms of accountability. Beautiful clean studio, feels very safe and they have built such a wonderful community around fitness. SO needed in the Sunset, very lucky to have this in the neighborhood. I really enjoy having classes only be 45 minutes it makes for a perfect break to the workday being able to run over during lunch etc. read more

**Ball Method with Sepano** I want to preface this review in that I've only taken one class with Yu Balance and I have previously taken other group fitness classes though that was maybe 5-8 years ago. And I've also worked out in a group setting outside a class (also 5-8 years ago) which thoroughly traumatized me and gave my self-esteem all new lows. I am most certainly a beginner especially since I have pretty poor endurance and in the last few years, I have mostly been at the gym on an elliptical and Stairmaster. I'm also not the type of person that gets any encouragement with people yelling at me (i.e. SoulCycle). So with all this being said, you can imagine that I was very trepidatious and a bundle of nerves heading into class. I also want to give a shout out to Evelyn who is in customer service who answered my very lengthy emails about Yu Balance and gave me a free pass to try any class. So...moving on to the actual class...everyone was really welcoming. It is a small class of 10 and in the Ball Method class, I think I was the only one who this was my first class but there were a few who had maybe 2-3 classes in. The Ball Method class was all floor exercises so you don't need to bring athletic shoes. You will definitely sweat during the class but it isn't so difficult that you can't keep up. Once the class starts, it is non-stop but you can do all the exercises at your own pace (i.e. if the person next to you does 10 push-ups, you can go slower and do maybe 5 if that is your pace within the timeframe of that particular set). Sepano went around the classroom correcting our form and providing us with feedback throughout the class. It was definitely very encouraging and at no time did I feel judged or rushed in anyway. There were definitely moments where I really wanted to stop but in a blink of an eye, the class was over. For all the beginners out there, I really do recommend the Ball Method class here at Yu Balance. Even for those that aren't beginners, I think it would be a good class to work on form and to find new things that work for you. It mostly will be a while before I can take another class here at YuBalance since I have to work around my schedule (ugh long commutes), but instead of trepidation, I will look forward to the next time I can make it. read more

Safe and clean! The trainers are so great. Have done in class workouts with Spencer, Mecca, and Shawn. They all were so inviting. Conscious of all Covid safe protocols. All members/staff are masked, socially distanced, air purifiers on, doors open, and doing temp checks before you walk in. As well as taking off shoes when you enter and sanitation at the end of workouts. I feel super safe... and honestly what working out does for the mind.. is SO essential in this crazy moment in time. read more

Small class sizes, super personable trainers who make sure you're doing okay (form, safety, support), and just a really, really nice place. It attracts all sorts of folks of varying fitness levels and leaves you feeling great and all nice and neighborhoody. Warning: It's kind of addictive. As a former trainer, it's tough to find a place to work out without cringing. (If you know, you know.) There are a lot of shitty fitness opportunities out there where instructors cue awfully and tell you to do ridiculous things without knowing the "why". YuBalance is not one of these places. I've trained with both Maike and Sepano. Awesome coaches. Trainers here know what they are doing. The workouts are tough, but functional. You have options. It's chill- but you can work as hard as you choose. It truly is like having a personal trainer in a class setting. Like Barry's for the highly sensitive. No crazy loud music, a smallllll group of people, individualized instruction/feedback and intentional workout planning makes this a total upgrade from that setting. I felt safe, but motivated. I'm sad I had to move away RIGHT when I found the perfect place to train. Highly recommend this studio/gym. It's clean, professional, no bullshit. If you're in SF, don't waste your time anywhere else. read more

All of the instructors add their personal flare to the class and make you feel welcome, no matter how large the class size is. During COVID, I've been taking their online classes and love them. LOVE YuBalance. A lot of places will say "we have small classes" and it ends up being 18 people. I think at max YuBalance take 10 people per class. They know you by name and really seem to care. You also might say this looks easy because the weights aren't crazy heavy, but trust me, you'll get a good workout in. I hesitate to write this because I don't want Yubalance to get super popular, but at the same time I really enjoy it, so I want to give credit where credit is due. Yubalance is a great studio for a range of fitness levels, is less expensive than some of the other neighborhood studios, and has actually made me enjoy working out. My fitness level was 0 when I decided I needed to lose a few pounds. I've never really felt comfortable at a gym and I hadn't worked out regularly in years. I started going to the Ball Method class a couple times a week and found it a good entry level class that's as gentle or as intense as you want it to be. Once I started gaining more confidence I started branching out to more classes. Each of them lets you choose a dumbbell or kettlebell weight that's comfortable for you, ranging from 5 to 30 pounds. I definitely started with the lightest weights in the beginning but have been working my way up. I enjoy the structure of the classes and always leave feeling pretty wiped (in a good way). Classes tend to be mixed gender and I've seen the instructors modify exercises to accommodate injuries and pregnancy. PROS: --Each instructor (Maike, Sepano, Joshua) has their own flavor, all are great. --You can choose your own intensity for all exercises. --Class are small enough for the instructors to check your form. They'll also remember you after you've been there a few times. --No judgment from anyone else. Everyone is focused on doing their own thing. CON: --This isn't really a studio where you can drop in. Some classes tend to fill up completely, and for better or for worse you have to schedule your workouts a week or two in advance. If there's one particular class you like, it can be challenging to find more than one time per week that works with your schedule. All in all, I'm a fan. YuBalance is an amazing addition to the Inner Sunset, where many classes uniquely focus on a circuit training model where you complete a set of exercises for a few rounds (think: weights + cardio + resistance). Clean studio, small classes, personalized attention during the workout, including learning your name and YOU! It's such a nice change to walk in and be more than a random person checking into an iPad though an app. Even during group classes, the instructors make sure to push you to try and have correct form + not giving up. Hours and class offerings are continuing to grow as YuBalance is established. Workouts are challenging enough to feel the burn after each day but not so taxing you can't go everyday! read more

Yubalance has changed my life. Instead of going to the gym to do the same ol' lifting routines and run endless cycles on the treadmill, I now have fun, hard, and varied workouts every week. I also love how Yubalance is *not* valid with Classpass. This keeps the classes small and frees up the teachers to help with your form and make sure you get a great workout in. I've had the pleasure to go to 4 different class types thus far, and am big fans of all of them. I met Rory at two of the classes, and he's a great guy & trainer. One of the unique things about YuBalance is that they usually make time for stretching / foam rolling in class. This is huge for me as I usually don't end up doing enough maintenance after classes. Here are my thoughts on the classes I've tried so far: 1) YuSweat - This one is non-stop four-minute intervals of two exercises each. It lives up to its name, giving you a good amount of strength training while making you sweat & leaving time for foam rolling at the end. 2) YuStretch - Never been to a class like this, but loved going through 45 minutes of taking care of my body with the foam roller & lacrosse ball. 3) Body Sculpt - This is one of the better ones for beginners. There are 4 stations, and we do each one four times before switching to a new set of four exercises. 4) YuPower - Similar to YuSweat, this one was pretty fast-paced, and definitely got a great leg & ab workout. Overall, I'm thrilled that YuBalance opened up so close to me. I can't wait as they extend their class schedule, and add in things like bootcamp for runners. read more

I've been a 'casual' runner most of my adult life and worked out in a regular gym on and off for the past few years. I never really enjoyed it and it was always just a way to stay relatively fit. 2.5 months ago, I decided I was in a fitness rut and needed to find something I'd enjoy and yelp lead me to YuBalance. I LOVE YuBalance!!!! I'd never worked out in a class setting before but this is so much better than that because most classes max out at 10 and a few of the new classes at 5. The trainers correct your form as you go and there's never any pressure to keep up or overexert yourself. The pace is manageable and each class is a full body workout. The routines and the music change every month so there's no chance of ever getting bored, and because each trainer brings their own 'flavor' to each class, it's never monotonous. I started with the Ball Method and Body Sculpt classes, and recently started trying out the YuSweat, YuPower and YuFit classes. They're a bit more intense, but definitely still doable. I also love the new Self Defence class - still a great workout, just with a self-defence twist. All the trainers here are AWESOME! It feels like I'm working out with a much fitter friend who's very encouraging and wants to see me get better. 2.5 months in and I know I'm stronger and leaner. I love having such an amazing gym in my own neighborhood. Tiny class sizes and great trainers make all the difference. I am always super happy after attending a class. It starts out of convenience because of the location, but I quickly grew to love the workouts and the energy and the personalities of the trainers. I love trying classes at different fitness studios, but YuBalance sets itself apart in several ways. It's a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and its class style truly makes it accesible to all levels of fitness. The classes max out at 10, so this small group atmosphere is welcoming, client-focused, and allows for more access to the instructor. The workouts can be adjusted by modifications, different weights, or the amount of reps you do in a given time. The instructors give individual attention and go out of their way to meet each person taking a class. Rory, the owner, is so friendly and intentional about providing a great client experience. I highly recommend YuBalance for its variety of fun and challenging classes in a clean and comfortable atmosphere. Love the small class size. Instructors are super enthusiastic. That said, also want to give a shout out to customer service. I was having trouble booking a class and reached out for help. Turns out that I was the one making a mistake, not the system (didn't notice expiration date) but instead of pointing out the error, they made an adjustment on the back end so I could register for this class. I'll definitely be re-upping, and this just sealed the deal. First class operation. read more
