Then the land opens up, the Columbia River stretches wide like it's catching its breath and boom you arrive at The Dalles Lock and Dam Visitor Center. This is where you stop, step out, and really take it in. The dam itself The Dalles Dam was built between 1952 and 1957 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, costing about $243 million at the time. It stretches over 3,000 feet across the river, holding back a force that doesn't negotiate. And right here at the visitor center, you get one of the best vantage points to witness it all. The visitor center is the kind of place that sneaks up on you in a good way. Clean, well-kept, and loaded with surprisingly interesting exhibits. You'll find displays breaking down how the locks work (yes, real ships get lifted and lowered like something out of a mechanical dream), plus the history of the river, trade routes, and the raw power behind hydroelectric generation. It's educational without feeling like homework. Step outside though that's the real show. You stand there watching the water churn, hearing that low, constant thunder, and it hits you: this isn't just scenery. It's controlled chaos. And like any place where man wrestles nature into submission, there's a weight to it. You can't help but think about the lives, the risks, the cost beyond dollars. These places are as much graveyards as they are achievements quietly demanding respect. Five stars, easy. It's beautiful. It's a little eerie if you let your imagination wander. And it's one of those stops that turns a road trip into something more than just miles on pavement. Next stop. John Day then Baker City And I swear these dams just keep getting dammier.

The camp hosts are friendly. Peach Beach RV Park is located on the Columbia River and also a bike ride away from Maryville Stonehenge. See photos. The camp hosts are very welcoming with some peaches when you check in. Easy walking access to Maryhill State Park and their beach. Even though the beach access at this park is not too shabby. The little fruit stand is within walking distance with a nice variety of produce, canned and otherwise. I will mention about the trains and autos being a little noisy, but the whole Columbia gorge is like that. Hopefully will be back soon!!

It's one of the few parks along the Columbia that stays open year round. The individual spots are a nice size and pretty level. There were only a handful of spots taken that night, and all the others were staying along the water. We chose to stay by ourselves nearer the track side...although honestly the rail noise isn't bad at this park. The whole park is very well-maintained and clean. Gorgeous trees abound providing lots of shade throughout. There's a good amount of space to roam around, as well as other things available during peak season...a horseshoe court, fish cleaning station, and plenty of picnic tables. I'm allergic to burning wood so I don't get to stay at campgrounds often. Maryhill has a peaceful and idyllic location...wish they had a non-burning section so I could stay even when they are busy.

Absolutely frustrating as could be of a situation and the park rangers and staff never once apologized. Not only did they not apologize but they also didn't compensate us whatsoever when a bunch of our belongings were destroyed due to their sprinkler system. Moral of the story is avoid staying here because the staff isn't considerate even when they ruin your trip. I have seen other reviews of this park that have experienced the same thing, again not sure why they have sprinklers running at 9pm inside your campsite.

This is the CLEANEST hotel/motel/resort I've ever stayed in. Period. That includes 5 star Vegas locations. The couple who runs it are nice, accommodating, and do a great job. There were NO VACANCIES at ANY hotel/motel from Gresham/Portland to Rufus. They didn't have any vacancies at the Tyee either but Charlotte made it happen. She had one room that someone had just moved out of. This was about 10:00 p.m. and Charlottle rented me the room and cleaned the room just to accomodate us because she knew how tired we were. Charlotte's husband was grilling hamburgers and offered to make us dinner. Charlotte gave us sodas and chips for the girls. I will come back and stay here again. We had a good night sleep and the hospitality was GREAT!
