Their selection of baked goods is greater than other Loblaws. They also have a Starbucks inside. Their prepared foods area is also a lot nicer looking than other locations. This Loblaws is huge. There's a big Joe Fresh clothing section. They have a good cheese section. Their floral section is also good, like they have lots of flowers, not just some wilted carnations like at some smaller locations. This location reminds me a lot of the present-day Loblaws on St. Clair Avenue West at Bathurst Street in Toronto. I say present-day because most of my memories of that Loblaws are from when I was a kid and they definitely did renovations since then, because it wasn't much to look at back then, but is super nice now, lol. There is a special place in my heart for the above Toronto Loblaws, so that may contribute to why I really like this Loblaws in Barrhaven. I'm rarely in Barrhaven, but the times that I've been to this Loblaws I've scored some great sales. They have lots of marked down items (50% off) either because they are short-dated or they are discontinued or they didn't sell well. Fortunately for me, I have weird tastes, lol, so I tend to like things that don't sell well, like that wacky chip flavour no one liked, bring it on! That crazy ice cream flavour? Yum yum! And short dated? No problem! I don't like to delay gratification when it comes to food, I mean sometimes packages barely make it to my car before they are opened and my mouth is full, haha. Anyway, I like this Loblaws. If it were closer to my house, I would be there all the time. Lots of free parking in the plaza.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Discount grocery store, but prices…read moreare only slightly lower than regular grocery stores, no huge discounts. Big, bright and clean though. The Long Version: The No Frills brand has a special place in my heart because growing up my mom regularly took me to No Frills and Valdi all the time (on Eglinton near Dufferin, in Toronto. The Valdi is long gone, but the No Frills is still there. Likely different ownership, but I'm not sure). Back then No Frills stores were a bit dark and dingy and really felt like a discount store, and their prices were quite lower than regular grocery stores, but these days most No Frills are big and bright, and their prices are just slightly less than regular grocery stores. They are still rather utilitarian looking so they are still true to their name of being without frills, but the discounts aren't really there as much as they were in the past. This specific location on Grant Carmen recently opened in 2024. It used to be a Your Independent Grocer. The location is a bit tucked away. There's lots of free parking but the layout is such that there are no parking spots close to the entrance, not even accessible parking. So something to keep in mind if you have mobility issues. This location is a bit hidden. It's technically in the same plaza as the Winners, Dollarama, Melanie Lyne and Value Village, but it's hidden around the back. Ottawa did not have a No Frills until 2024. Prior to 2024, the only No Frills around were in Orleans and Stittsville, and Arnprior, but then a few Your Independent Grocer locations converted to No Frills. So I'm happy to have a No Frills closer to home. Review #23 (2025)

So firstly, they only have 1 accessible gender neutral washroom and you have to go to customer service to ask for the key. As for the actual grocery store, it's similar to other stores under the Independent Grocers banner in layout and general feel. They didn't have lots of in-store sales or discounted products (beyond the sales advertised in the weekly flyer). I love looking for in-store specials and marked down items, so I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't much and they don't even have a clearance section, or at least I didn't see one. They also didn't have too many exotic products or things not available at other locations or not easily found at other grocery stores, except for some tortilla chips made from spent beer grains. It's a totally acceptable grocery store, but did not give off any "special vibes" for me, haha. This grocery store is located in a plaza. It's next to the Dollarama. Lots of free parking.

They might not have quite the variety of bigger stores, but when shopping for essentials, they are perfect. This particular location hold a place in my heart as it was my first official job: I would wake up at 3:30am on the weekends to head to work and bake bread! I would still enjoy some of my weekend with friends from high school, and I saved for University. The managers were really great about working the schedule to try and fit everyones needs. We were mostly students working in the bakery and each had our own extra curricular actives and requirements - somehow it all fit together quite nicely. A great place to shop, a nice place to work. Happy to live in the area close to this location!

It's also across the street from another plaza that has a Food Basics and a Shoppers Drug Mart, so if I'm really keen, I can do a massive errand run. Anyway, this location is just ok, imo. There's nothing too remarkable about it. Their discount/clearance section is really tucked away though, by the washrooms. I don't know why they put it there, because I'm sure most shoppers miss it. It's never been all that busy any time that I've been. Like even during the Covid-19 Pandemic when other Loblaws had huge lineups to get in, this one had less congestion. Staff tend to be a bit less friendly than at other nearby locations, at least that has been my observation. Lots of free parking.

One thing to keep in mind when going so late is that the aisles can get pretty packed with overnight crew and merchandise on pallets, so it is hard to navigate through some of the aisles. Another thing is that they had their speaker system so loud, and I understand they were using their speaker system as a way of communication with other overnight staff, but every couple of minutes you had workers yelling into the system.
