Freshco - Imported ice cream from Lithuania!

This grocery store has so many imported/exotic products! I saw frozen Pupusas from El Salvador,…read morefrozen Momos from India and ice cream from Lithuania! They also have items made in North America, but cater to ethnic communities. They have lots of ice cream in tropical flavours such as Soursop, Guava, etc. They have lots of Asian flavoured ice creams like red bean, matcha, etc. They have mochi and bubble tea ice cream bars too. I love browsing and looking at all their different imported items. As for regular mainstream North American groceries, their prices are cheaper than other chains like Loblaws and Metro. They are more in line with chains like No Frills and Food Basics. I would describe FreshCo as a discount grocery store. The produce isn't always fresh and it seems to be perpetually picked over. And sale items are often sold out. But other than that, it's pretty good. They have a points system, but it's a bit annoying. It's Scene+ and basically you don't get points on everything, just certain items for the week and Scene+ members can get discount prices for certain items for the week. It's all in their weekly flyer. Anyway, if you are interested in items imported from other countries, FreshCo has lots and from a variety of different countries. Free parking in the plaza parking lot.

This is not my favourite grocery store. It reminds me of a "No Frills" store (see…read morehttps://www.nofrills.ca/) where you put a quarter in your basket to get it off the chain of baskets, and the store inside is really really basic. The impression is that they are passing the discounts on to the customer. And let's face it, you can get good prices at these kinds of stores. But I don't like the experience of shopping at Freshco's. It's not warm and welcoming; it's not pretty. Maybe it's the lighting? It feels sort of industrial to me. As a result, when we see something advertised at this store at a deep dish discount (like the turkeys were, at 0.88 cents a lb), I go in, do what I need, and get the heck out. Maybe this is just me, but grocery shopping is a bit of a chore, and that might reflect on my feeling about this shop. Aside from that, this mall is in a good location, with businesses and housing surrounding it, so you'd think it would do well. But it seems to me that the shops in this strip mall change a lot. Oh well, that keeps things interesting, I guess.

However, their staff were very friendly and welcoming. The Long Version: This review is for their meat pies. I love Lebanese meat pies. Ever since my first meat pie at Aladdin's so many moons ago, I became addicted. I also introduced them to my husband and my entire family and they all love them too. So it might come as no surprise that my mission is to try all the places that sell Lebanese meat pies in Ottawa. So when I found Lebanese Food Centre and Bakery on Google Maps, I made a note to check them out when I was next in the neighbourhood. I got 2 meat pies ($3.50 each). I ate one right away in the car, lol, and brought the other one home for my husband. I found the meat pie ok. These ones didn't have that smokey flavour that I love. And I feel it could have benefited from some spice. I did like that the dough wasn't too thick or fluffy. It was thin and slightly crispy on the outside. The amount of meat was good but I feel I would have liked more tomatoey tang. It's just personal preference but I like my Lebanese meat pies a bit spicy, tangy from the tomatoes with a touch of smokey flavour (I'm guessing from smoked paprika) and the one here didn't have those elements. The man serving me was very friendly and welcoming and I appreciated that. They are a small grocery store but also have fresh meats, and prepared foods. They sell rotisserie chicken, grilled chicken and skewered meats. They have a charcoal grill. And they have some sweets too. I saw Kunafe and Shaabiyat. I would return to try their desserts and maybe a shish tawook wrap or something else from their grill. They have a few picnic tables out front to eat at. They are located in a small plaza. Free parking available in the plaza parking lot. Review #200 (2025)

This is the first out of two dates for the market, the next one being next Saturday, November 27th, from 10am to 2pm. As a mama with a stroller, it was difficult to maintain the 2 metres of social distancing, especially when lining up for specific vendors, but we tried to keep as much distance from people as possible, masks were mandatory, and everyone was very respectful. Try not to handle any of the goods unless you're going to buy them - the vendors are more than happy to give you your items. There are also squares for payment via credit or credit (tap and insert available, but tap is preferable to avoid less touching, though there's also hand sanitizer at all vendor stations). The layout is a big circle, so traffic just moves in one direction, counterclockwise. If you missed something or wanted to go back, rather than going backwards, you just keep going around the circle until you're back to where you started. I thought it would be a good idea to take one loop around to see what there was first before buying, and then come back for the stuff I wanted, but I did end up missing out on some things because they sold out so quickly. My friend and I went at around 12:45pm and left when it was starting to close around 2, and it was still busy, with people buying whatever was leftover. Note that you can pre-purchase or reserve from some vendors online or via e-mail so that it doesn't sell out on you (thanks, Nat's Bread!). Speaking of bread, I thought that's all I was coming for, but nope, BIG NOPE. A lot of awesome local food and a super sore shoulder later, I left with a giant haul. There were tons of gifts and specialty food as well, and even a little shop with crafts and coffee truck for hot beverages, but I ended up doing some groceries. I'm really excited to try everything I bought, from savoury pies, sausages, and beef ribs, to fresh bread, ice cream sandwiches, chipotle maple syrup, organic apple sauce, red potatoes, and nacho chips! I could've bought more, but my reusable bag (that they give you for free at the entrance) and my stroller could only hold so much. It was a little muddy and rocky with the stroller, but nothing we couldn't handle, and it wasn't too chilly, either. Try heading all the way in with your car because there was plenty of parking in the lot, but tons of people parked on the side of the road when it wasn't necessary. And it's a shorter distance to carry everything you bought from the market to the car ;)

He specifically starts to shout, "No! No! No! You're making a mess!!" My nephew spills some of the juice on the metal tray (due to the fact that the slushy were watered down and became very runny). That was what the manager was making such a HUGE commotion about. The manager still proceeds on saying how my nephew made a mess, even though he did not! What grown man thinks it is okay to yell at a child? Oh and I totally forgot to mention! Prior to this incident, the manager was staring at us like a hawk during the whole duration of our visit. My nephew told me how the manager kept staring and grilling at him. It made him feel very uncomfortable. I cannot believe somebody like that is capable of being a manager. The manager displays such horrible customer service. I will never bring my family to this store again!
