TL;DR/The Short Version: Discount grocery store, but prices…read moreare only slightly lower than regular grocery stores, no huge discounts. Big, bright and clean though. The Long Version: The No Frills brand has a special place in my heart because growing up my mom regularly took me to No Frills and Valdi all the time (on Eglinton near Dufferin, in Toronto. The Valdi is long gone, but the No Frills is still there. Likely different ownership, but I'm not sure). Back then No Frills stores were a bit dark and dingy and really felt like a discount store, and their prices were quite lower than regular grocery stores, but these days most No Frills are big and bright, and their prices are just slightly less than regular grocery stores. They are still rather utilitarian looking so they are still true to their name of being without frills, but the discounts aren't really there as much as they were in the past. This specific location on Grant Carmen recently opened in 2024. It used to be a Your Independent Grocer. The location is a bit tucked away. There's lots of free parking but the layout is such that there are no parking spots close to the entrance, not even accessible parking. So something to keep in mind if you have mobility issues. This location is a bit hidden. It's technically in the same plaza as the Winners, Dollarama, Melanie Lyne and Value Village, but it's hidden around the back. Ottawa did not have a No Frills until 2024. Prior to 2024, the only No Frills around were in Orleans and Stittsville, and Arnprior, but then a few Your Independent Grocer locations converted to No Frills. So I'm happy to have a No Frills closer to home. Review #23 (2025)

With the brand new location for this No Frills, we now have a very nice grocery store within a…read moreshort distance to go to shop. This store has a huge selection of fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and many types of meat. The varieties of canned goods, packages goods, and cold/frozen groceries are numerous. There is very little that this store does not have on hand except a sundry counter that would include lottery tickets, etc.

Place is way to expensive. $5 something for a loaf of wonder…read morebread? 17 for 2 chicken breads? Didn't even look at the fish prices. Walked by the pastry shop. They have lost their minds. They aren't even trying to be thoughtful for it's customers. Nope they won't get my money anymore.

After many many many years of them closing down a pretty run down, pretty ghetto Metro on RIdeau,…read moreit's finally re-opened! They opened the last week of August and I heard there were giveaways for the first 100 shoppers. I unfortunately had meetings or would have dropped by to check it out. The place looks like it's in pristine condition. Security out front, gates when you come in and immediately into the produce section. They have a pretty good selection of produce here. It's larger than what's in New Edinburgh and seems pretty fresh. WAY nicer than what was here at the previous Metro. After the produce section, there's a hot bar on the left I believe. I saw pizza and flatbreads there and a few other goodies. There's a nice prepared and packaged foods in the area as well. Lots of options. Once you get past that, there's a bakery with lots of breads and baked goods. I mean take a look at all those cakes! Unfortunately I've never tried any of these so I really can't comment on the quality. The butcher has some decent quality meats and a decent selection here as well. That's followed up with a seafood section. I don't think there's any fresh seafood but there's a nice selection here. As you walk throughout the store, there's rows of pantry items, snacks, drinks and did I mention snacks?! This Metro feels like it has a nicer selection than the old one. I think it'll have a lot of the things that you need. The staff have been friendly and helpful the few times I've been already. I hope this keeps up. I haven't. The prices are a bit higher than some of the budget grocery spots but I think a bit cheaper than Loblaws. Also if you're on the Loblaws boycott, this is the spot for you. It's great for residents of the area. It saves a trip to Loblaws or Farmboy.

I only discovered Farm Boy when I moved to Ottawa, but now I'm a huge fan…read more Farm Boy is a grocery store, and focuses on actual food, like produce, meats, dairy products, baked goods, etc. They have frozen foods and shelf-stable foods as well, but they are not like the big chain Loblaws or Superstores that sell a myriad of other things (like cosmetics, cleaning products, haircare, etc.). So Farm Boy is not a one stop shop, but good for actual food products. They have a great selection of prepared foods. As for their bakery, one word: Cruffins! Lol. They are essentially Cronuts! I guess they call them Cruffins because Croissant/Muffin sounds healthier than Croissant/Donut, haha. Whatever you want to call them, they are delicious! They have store-brand products that are pretty good too, like the Farm Boy salad dressings. Their kombucha is also mild and great for kombucha novices, lol. This location is smallish, but they do have the signature stuffed monkey swinging over the bananas in the produce section. Most Farm Boy stores have this, but there are a few that don't. Since it's small, this location tends to be crowded. It's not my favourite location, but I'll stop by whenever I'm in the plaza shopping at the health food store next door. Free parking in the plaza parking lot, which is a bit of a zoo when it's busy, so I always try to go off peak times.
