I went out here worried based on some of the reviews but Mr. Lee was smiling at me even before I walked in the door. I was here to replace items that had been stolen so I needed a gi, a belt, and various sparring pads. Mr. Lee spent a great amount of time going over all his options and letting me figure out which versions I needed. This will be my go to spot for all of the other items that we need to replace but didn't want to buy now. The store is a great asset to the Martial Arts community. read more

Hey, I'm just a gal looking for some foam sparring foot pads, can ya help me out? The owner was really nice, got me a pair to try on, and held them at the counter for me while I fawned over the fake swords and escrima sticks like jewelry. The selection looks small, but it seems like the kind of place where there's always more stuff "in the back." For the space, they had a bit of everything: sparring equipment, heavy bags, weapons, books. It's the one martial arts supply place I know of in Oakland, so I'll be back, I'm sure. read more

After every belt test, I give myself an allowance, and let myself spend it at Young's. The gear is quality, and he'll help you figure out what's best for your budget (I started with the lower end gear, and now I'm slowly upgrading to the nicer stuff--totally worth the cash, but glad I waited till the student level stuff wore out). Last time I was in, I bought sparring gear, a nice thick gi (love it love it love it!), and some stuff for my kwoon. He was patient, and multi-tasked with other customers, answering all our questions, and finding the right fit for each of us. (He even talked story a little bit--old school training, no pads...sounds cool, but I'm glad for my sparring gear!) I love to browse stuff online, but I still buy stuff at Young's. It's great to support a local business, his prices are more often than not very fair, and if you don't see it, just ask, he might have it, or be able to order it. Just don't ask for pink. He's not big on pink. (But, hey! Nobody's perfect, and I've got much respect for the old school, you know?) read more

I've come here three times now over the years. Each time the owner has treated me like I was suspect or wasting his time. I have no idea why. I actually wanted to support the local martial arts supply store, seeing as how rare martial arts supply stores are. Last time I tried buying some kung fu shoes for a photoshoot. I ask him the price and he acts like I'm wasting his breath. Then he follows me. It was surreal cuz I never get that kind of treatment. Especially as non-threatening as I appear. Prices are decent. Supplies on display are kind of low compared to Brendan Lai's. Wish I could rate this better but I just can't in all honesty. read more

I really want to support small local businesses, so I was really hoping to come here for my martial arts supplies, but after giving it the benefit of the doubt twice (I have been at the store three times), I can really say that the owner can be unbelievably rude to anyone new who asks questions or needs guidance. On my first visit I asked to see a uniform to have a sense for quality, size, etc. I was totally new to martial arts and I had no clue about any of it, so I naturally wanted to see it. He didn't want to open the bag and I offered to fold it back, in case that was the issue. He accused me rudely of not buying... ?!! I said I had all intentions of buying but I needed to see. Since I was not convinced about the quality, size and whether the gi would be fine for the two disciplines that I wanted to practice, I ended up not buying the uniform, and the man was furious. I went a second time to get some sparring gloves. The owner was tending to a regular customer, and he was helpful and normal with him. When it was my turn, I made my purchase without any incidents. I decided to give the place another go, given the neutral experience when purchasing the gloves. A year after my first visit I needed a second uniform. This time I knew what type of gi and quality I wanted, but I still wanted to see it outside the bag, mainly to check the size. The owner himself first guessed I was a size 3 and then 4... When I asked to see the uniform he went on to a new series of seriously and unacceptably rude accusations. "You don't buy!" To which I replied that I wanted to, I had the full intention to buy. He again angrily repeated his accusations, at which point I told him that was no way to speak to a customer or to any person, he did not know -obviously- what intentions I had, and he was being very rude. I left and I will never go back or recommend the place. If you know what you need and don't ask to see it, you might be fine. If you need guidance, ask your friends, go online or shop somewhere else. I would hate for others to go through the same kind of gratuitous and ridiculously abusive experience. If you're familiar with Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi," you get the idea. Here is the little shop that can! Mr. Lee does it as best as he can, in what can only be defined as a "Specialty Shop". My family and I have been training in a martial art for a couple of years now, and this is where we go to get our goods. Excellent customer service Best EastBay location for all of your Martial Art supplies. If you don't see what you want ask, they will find whatever it is you are looking for. From what I can tell the same family has owned this business for years. I was buying equipment from them in the mid-eighties. I recently purchased sparring pants and escrima sticks, pants were heavy cotton, excellent quality at a great price. By golly the guy was super masterful and quick about my lack of ineptness! I recently bought a Tae Kwon Do uniform and he knew everything from my size, my waist and, amazingly, even my belt rank (not white!). Funny thing is that he was slightly dozing off by a share in front of the door and sensed my friend and I so he quickly got up and courteously ushered us in. Over all, job well done. It was easy-peasy, no drama and he went right to the point. The price wasn't all that bad too and we went on with our lives a little lighter and happier because of his attitude and gestures. The shop owner here is very friendly! I feel a little bad because I tested a glove out by (with his permission) punching my Sensei in the ribs with it and it really startled said shop owner, heh! I'm sorry! But he always will give a customer his attention and really endeavor to be helpful and help you find what you want. He is willing to order things if he does not have them in stock. He also carries some high quality stuff- I love the shinai I got here, and I also note that he is very good at judging sizes by eye- so far every estimation he has made has been accurate. This is a great little store, and it's also the only martial arts supply store with traditional stuff that I know of in the East Bay. read more

Glad to find a local martial arts supplies shop. As others have said, the owner is friendly and knowledgeable, and the store is nicely stocked. My only complaints are with the people who were there when the owner was not (they were incredibly rude and condescending) and with the sword prices---some swords were not full tang, yet still pricey (a full tang extends the full length of the grip-portion of a handle, versus a partial tang which does not). Went here to buy a gi for my daughter learning Jiu Jitsu. The price online says $38 for size 0-2. Then when I was going to pay, he raised his price to $45, saying that "his prices are subject to change without notice." I told him he should go by his prices on his website, or update the website to reflect his price. (Instead of taking advantage of a customer on the spot). That was simply unfair. He offered to not charge tax if I didn't ask for a receipt. So that he could just pocket all the profit? No sir! I'm not spending any money on him regardless!I didn't like his attitude or business practice, so I ended up not buying. I'll go spend my money on a more deserving business. read more

Wish I had come here before ordering my gi online. At the store you're able to make sure it fits before you buy. Many, many styles of gis and the store seems to have everything. The owner was very knowledgeable and helpful in a low-key kind of way. Planning to go back for a black gi and may also check out the escrima sticks. Prices seem very reasonable, too. read more

Great storew. One of a kind. Tip: diversify product and modernize store/website and a little marketing would help this business out. They carry thai Smai (modern thai). Good quality but a little old school. In the stire its miss marked as master line which is actually the company where the producted is distributed through. Thai smai is authentic muay thai gear. Um I'd really like to see this place not go under so atleast stop in and see if they have what you want first before ordering online. read more

I don't know why every one is giving such great reviews because that is not the experience my fiance and i had. My fiance hasn't practiced in a few yrs and decided to go back practicing tae kwon do. He has grown out of everything, so i decided to buy everything for him, meaning i was going to spend a few hundred. We walked in and started looking around and from the time we walked in he followed us like we were going to steal. I asked the guy if he could help my fiance with sizing because we didn't know his size. He says, "I know his size but is he going to buy." I look at him and explain that we needed to try on uniform and sparring gear so that we can purchase and he said again but is he going to buy here. I was annoyed because he only wanted to help if we are buying. Yes we were but he should help regardless. I then proceed to inquire about belts because his black belt is too small and he again begins with well if he is going to buy here then.....by that time I was pissed off and I walked out because he was extremely rude. Needless to say, I drove down to another city and made a purchase at a extremely helpful establishment and spent a few hundred dollars. I also made purchases online. read more

Felt incredibly disrespected by the owner when trying to buy an outfit for a Halloween costume. He wouldn't let me buy any size other than the one he deemed fit and wouldn't let me try anything on.
