This was the last stop on a Newtown mural and food tour, and it was a great end to a fun-filled afternoon. Young Henry's has good energy from jump with a hilarous House Rules poster that includes no d*cks - I giggled over that for far too long, lol. That said, I wasn't very impressed with the beer offerings (HUGE BEER SNOB HERE), but I really liked the space and enviroment. Young Henry's is covered in cool murals and tchotchkes, many of which are hilarious. If I was a Newtown resident, I'd be hanging out there all the time. Truly wish I'd been able to visit again before my Sydney trip was over. Hopefully there's a next time. Excellent visit. read more

Local craft beer! This place is FANTASTIC! I had such a great time here! Even if you're not a beer nerd, this is a wonderful beer hall to sample some local suds. They make the beer there on site, and use local grains, canning, kegging and distributing their beer from there behind the glass behind the bar. I was thirsty when I arrived, and was promptly met with several options for beers to try. Each one was more delicious than the last. They had about eight beers on tap. I even got to try the Foo Fighter's beer where they collaborated with David Grohl from the band to make a beer! I got to talk with the manager, who set up a special tour of the brewery, where I got to see the tanks and the equipment, got to ask a heap of questions, and sampled all their beers! It was amazing! I can't sing the praises high enough for their quality of beers, terrific service, and cool vibe in the tasting hall! They've got picnic table style bars lined up with chairs, and they serve up burgers outside! They have a variety of beers for every taste, from lighter lagers to full bodied porters! They even have a cider! Everyone was super friendly, and the beers were quite a great price! They are crafting up some incredible beers, and this is a must see for any Sydney beer lover. read more

The brewery is in the back streets of Newtown and is delightfully scuzzy in your-best-mate's-living-room sort of way. Affordable growlers, $5 beers on tap, plenty of seating... There are a lot of good reasons to take the journey down the shady alleyway and into the warehouse that is the Young Henry's brewery. I went with a girlfriend for the brewery tour, 2pm on Saturday, and was blown away. Our tour guide was one of the most knowledgable people I've heard talk about beer, but he spoke about it in a way that was interesting and engaging and relatable and not a lot of cook times and secret recipe Mumbo-jumbo. During the hour-long tour you get six (SIX!) beers, and since I only paid $40 I feel like that's a hell of a deal. You also have a chance to see where and how they brew everything, and taste some of the individual parts that make up the delicious golden beverage you are holding. If you aren't trying to do the tour, the tasting room is just as great. $5 beers, plenty of couches and tables to sit at and a food truck serving up Asian delights to boot. 10/10 would recommend. So, there is no denying that I have a thing for crafties. Oh yeah! Any opportunity my partner and I will hunt them down. Whether they be in the back alleys and behind a bunch of buildings. Which so happens to be were we found Young Henry's. Yup, in a little warehouse in Newtown. Our lil' Uber driver and ourselves got a little puzzled trying to find it. But alas, we caught our eye on a sign just off Enmore Road. Upon entry you will find a funky little set up with a shipping container and recycled timber tables. There is a good amount of space for groups! So, feel free to bring your mates if you are interested in having a beer sesh. Great atmosphere, music and cool art around you. Beer is cheap at $5. Love that! My fave of the brews was the Pale Ale. Quite easy to drink and flavoursome! I would have to say that Young Henry's beers are not too heavy on the hops, so if that is something you like, you will enjoy this beer. Last thing to mention is the brewers. Sydney needs more breweries. So it was with keen interest that I heard of Young Henry's, the new brewery in the backstreets of Newtown. These guys have been set up here for about 9 months, and they have cellar-door sales, and a space that looks rather like a bar. In fact, I think it is a bar, I think you can just hang out here and drink. There are sofas and bar stools and things like that. But I came here to buy beer in bulk. They sell a solid handful of specialty beers (brewed on site - you can see the vats and all that), and a cloudy cider. The emphasis is on the revival of old styles. You can buy big, beautiful 2L glass bottles (and smaller bottles too). You can bring the big bottles back to be refilled, and that gets you a $7 discount on your next 2L, or something like that. Some of the blokes working here are good publicists and get their beer involved with all sorts of hipster activities around Sydney. Others are just intensely interested in getting the craft of brewing just right, and they're fussy about it. The cider is full of apple flavour and not too sweet, and the Newtowner is a subtle summer ale - not overly fruity, but definitely has its own identity. read more

I'd tried Young Henry's beer from my local beer merchant, so had to stop in and see the brewery and tasting bar while in Sydney. Young Henry's are doing a few things right. Firstly, their beer is very tasty. They all had different distinct flavors and none were bad on the palate. Secondly, they have really decked the place out with street art to give the tasting bar a cool vibe. Tables are made from storage rack components and a large painted shipping container dominated the space in a cool way. Thirdly, the beers are well priced and have quirky names like "brew am I" and "newtowner", and can be bought take away in growlers or smaller bottles. One thing that was a bit disappointing was that we arrived an hour before closing time and were told that we couldn't get paddles (6 or so small tasting glasses of beer) because "we have stopped doing them today". I thought that was a tad lame as we drank the equivalent in regular glasses. No reason was given, so it seemed strange. Still, I will definitely go back and enjoy their scrumptious beers next time I'm in the big smoke. Cheers lads. read more

I hippity hopped my way into this microbrewery wide eyed and bushy tailed and floated out on a cloud of IPA fuzz. I have a thing for warehouses so this place with its high industrial ceilings, grey slab walls, concrete flooring, scaffolding platform tables, mismatched bar stools and lamps made out of Young Henry's growler bottles had me swooning (and I hadn't even tried the beer yet). But the most important thing is the beer. They brew it here and have the hipster beards and coppa hats to prove it god damn it! Rock up to the bar and start a conversation. Beer guys love to talk beer and they are more than happy to run you through and give you tastings of the beers on tap for the afternoon (it ain't quite a tasting flight but it left me feeling good). These guys clearly like to get experimental in the kitchen (and who knows where else) because the beers I tried were like no other. I tried the simple Real Pale and their Peachy Nectar, which is 7.8% and tastes like the juice from the garden of Eden. I even tried the apple cider that had me sucking at my cheeks it was so lovely and dry. But their ain't no doubt about it, for the love of god have their Few Of My Favourite Things beer. It is supposed to have elements of bacon and truffle infused into and I couldn't taste any of that because I am no beer aficionado but it was hands down the best IPA I've ever had. They keep it simple, serve only to Newtown and the Inner Sydney district (so good luck trying to find their beer in the rest of Aus), provide refills into big Growler bottles for regulars to take home for their garden parties and BBQ's and just basically love sharing their love of beer with people like me who have no clue, but love trying something different. read more

I am often in Newtown but didn't even know Young Henrys existed until our friends visiting from Colorado suggested going there as they had read about it. It's $5 for a smallish glass of tap beer. They give you unlimited free tastings before you make your selection so you can nab a little extra beer for nothing :) I tried the Newtowner and it was everything a beer should be - refreshing and with just the right amount of fizz and hopiness. I also tried my friends cider and it was also good. It tasted like cloudy apple juice which could be dangerous on a hot summers day when you lose track of the time and how much you have poured down your throat. The venue pulls of industrial chic particularly well. My group was divided over the brewery smell that wafted into the bar area - two of us thought the beer mash smelt nice and the other two thought it smelt like soggy dog food! read more

Wandered into this back alleyway this arvo for some beer tasting. You will think you're going the wrong way, but it's just to the right through the fence. The beer was pretty delicious. I am especially a fan of the Newtowner, which was made in celebration of Newtown's birthday! Would definitely recommend if you want a good beer without all the fuss. The venue & ambiance is better than the brews. It's pretty out of the way and down an alley you would never think to go down, which adds to the allure. Cool hipster/grungy place to hang out, but - as a dark beer fan - really disappointed in the 3 beers I tried: lager, stout (tastes too thin), & summer ale. Heard the cider was good, but I was pretty over it after my 3rd drink. Take time to walk around the block to enjoy the graffiti. They hire a food truck to bring in food - great idea. read more

I ended up here with a group of friends on a crawl. I thought we were headed down a residential street by accident, and all of a sudden there's a brewery. It's a fun, very hipster brewery to visit - reminded me of some Pacific Northwest US breweries I've visited. There are quite a few microbrews to try at reasonable prices, and they sell growlers. The ambiance is casual, and when we were there there was a food truck and a record truck (I didn't even know those existed) right at the entrance. Young Henry's beers are brilliant, and so when I was visiting Sydney from Adelaide I knew I needed to make a trip to Newtown and get my brew on. The brewery is a cool setup in the backstreets not far from the Enmore theatre and the interior reflects the gritty nature of the streets. Street art covers the walls, behind the bar the brewery looms, it's a brilliant atmosphere. On top of this, beers are $5 and they are all top notch. Each appealing to a different beer loving palette. Growlers and longnecks are available for takeaway too. I would have loved to spend a lazy arvo here , eaten some goodies from the food truck and perused the record stall outside. But the day was far too hot and with no aircon and few fans it was just not a pleasant place to be for an extended period. But that being said I'll definitely pop back next time I'm in town. I must confess we only came to Newtown to visit Young Henrys ... as a fairly new beer drinker (and craft beer is the only beer I will drink!), Young Henrys keep coming up again and again. Even Billy Kwong had the Young Henrys Lager! So down a side street we found the Young Henrys warehouse - what a great vibe! We came here on a Tuesday afternoon, so it was pretty quiet. The staff were very friendly, and happy to chat about beer to a couple of Adelaide girls. Only problem was they were in-between releases, so there weren't enough varieties for a tasting paddle ... but they made up for that by having their amazing Newtowner brew - oh my goodness, absolutely amazing!! Luckily Dan Murphy's in SA are stocking this amazing beer, so we can stock up at home. We also tried the Lager and Cider, both of which were delicious. Another place that we are itching to come back to next time we are in Sydney! read more

I like it here. Despite it taking me ages to actually find it - and that was only by accident, I like it. It's reminiscent of Batch brewery, with just as good a beer. No food onsite, but you can bring food in - which to be honest I've never experienced before so that's kind of cool. I've tried a variety of their beers off site and they are pretty good (from a non-professional beer drinker), so its worth stepping in and taking a look around. I didn't know about the cellar sales - might be worth going back and picking up some more. I did try one only on site, the IPA, and it was nice, via the pull tap rather than the one that's automated, so not as cold, but don't let that stop you - it's a quaint way to pull beers that I haven't seen before in Australia. read more
