I was never one of those people who would look at fashion magazines or pay attention to fashion trends to be familiar enough with clothing to know what would look good on me. I envied my peers who seemed to always look put together and that had a seemingly endless wardrobe. I don't dislike shopping but with the advent of online shopping and the thousands upon thousands of choices we now have, it's gotten pretty overwhelming--especially because I'm one of those people who like to look at EVERYTHING a store offers before making my choice. You can imagine how much time this has cost me. As someone who absolutely hates wasting time, I've started to outsource a lot of the aspects of my life to actual experts (like a physical trainer, for example) who have spent years studying their area of expertise. I don't think the few hours I've spent looking on Pinterest really mean that I'm an expert at picking clothes for myself, so that's what spurred my decision to look for a wardrobe consultant. I chatted with a few other consultants before deciding to choose Leah both because of her stellar reviews as well as her focus on working with women. Working with Leah was super comfortable, and I never felt any pressure to purchase anything that I didn't feel amazing in. I felt as if I were shopping with a friend, but a friend who will very honestly tell you if something looks good or not. She also gave me a good tip for figuring out if I actually like something or not (watch your body language in it!). I honestly was a little skeptical of how many items I would actually end up liking as I feel like I'm quite picky, but I was pleasantly surprised to leave the session with over fifteen new pieces, each at fairly reasonable prices (she's good at finding things on sale!). It would have taken me years to find all the clothes that Leah found for me in one session, and the time savings was probably the most valuable thing for me (on top of all the new clothes that I'll probably wear for much longer than anything I've chosen for myself). If you think of this as an investment into your future wardrobe and you want the money you spend on your clothes to go much much further (AND save hours of shopping), this is totally worth it. Leah is incredibly good at helping make a person look like --and maybe even become-- the best version of themselves. My theory is that it is some kind of magic. The first neat trick Leah has is that she's able to make hard truths easy to hear. My guess is this is done through some combination of a genuine love for her fellow humans, a design-centric mind that can see a path beyond whatever mess is presented, and a true Southern charm that is dependent on the previous qualities mentioned. When I showed Leah my 15+ identical, well-worn dresses in different colors that I bought at a store called REI that you might be familiar with for their sporting equipment, she did not say, "Oh, honey." She said something more like, "REI is a great store, and they are great at a lot of things...but your day-to-day wardrobe? I just think you deserve nicer things." "I just think you deserve nicer things." And I'm paraphrasing that, but how devastatingly beautiful are those words, in this context? Well, the truth is that Leah was right: I deserved better than most of the clothes I owned...I just hadn't known that before she showed me how to be kinder to myself. We tossed out all the clothes that I bought two sizes too big to try to hide in, along with all 15+ of those identical, well-worn REI dresses. And then...there was nothing left in my closet.. So the next neat trick was: it's not just that Leah was right, but I managed to believe that she was right. I *did* deserve nicer things! And I couldn't wear those other things ever again, now that I knew that they weren't being very kind to me. And so, right there on the spot, perhaps emboldened, I managed to ask her to do a nice thing for me. "Leah, thank you so much for helping me with my closet, but there's not much left. Is there any way you could make the time to help me this afternoon?" And with that, she showed me that she thought I did deserve nice things through her actions in a pretty extreme way, by rearranging her whole day and helping me in my time of need. So all of that was very nice for my internal self, feelings blah blah blah, but for those of you looking for the other kind of magic, the kind you can see with your eyes -- some Cirque de Soleil meets Houdini visual trickery happened in that (well-curated, calm) dressing room. It was the best experience I've ever had in a store, and I don't even understand how she did it. But somehow, Leah curated a dressing room with a ton of clothes that fit me just right. From jeans to sweaters, all of these clothes that I didn't know how to wear with my (oh, have I not mentioned this yet? possibly slightly not-model proportioned) physique pretty much all looked great. I bought a lot of stuff, and it made me feel great. Even more magical? The receipts were cheaper than shopping my old ways, per item. The grand finale though is all about the audience. My husband loves everything, though I still have to admit that I think he's better than I could ever deserve. My coworkers are a tougher crowd, always trying to fix everything, it is the nature of our work, but even they were impressed: "You've lost weight. I can tell. Good job." (Hint: I did not actually lose weight.) "I love that dress, you're totally channeling Victoria Beckham." "Did you go shopping? You've looked so great this whole week!" "You look great today!" "Love your boots!" "Did you get taller?" Anyways, it is past my bedtime, but I wanted to share the details of my lovely, very nice experience...if you are reading this and feeling bummed whenever you look at your closet...you probably also deserve something a little bit nicer. I have to admit, I was "nudged" into working with YLSF by a friend, and I'm so glad. My closet used to be filled with clothes that I didn't like but would wear because they were easy to launder, which always results in great fashion choices. First, we went through my closet and "laid to rest" at least 50% of my clothes. (After this purge, I found out that the BF and some good friends had always hated my J. Crew cardigans, which I had in every color!) During this process, Leah also showed me new ways to wear my existing wardrobe, which involved (...gulp...) sometimes tucking shirts into pants or skirts and wearing these things called accessories. Next, Leah helped me identify the gaps in my wardrobe and we set a shopping date. When I arrived at the store (on a Friends and Family Sale day, of course), there were two solid racks of clothes to try on. There were some major hits on those racks, many of which I would not have picked out for myself but looked great on. Also, can I mention bargains? I think I walked away paying less than 50% of the total MSRP of these clothes. What's also nice about Leah is that she charges by the hour instead of as a percent of the clothes she sources for you (as some style consultants do), so you never feel like you are being pushed into that full price pair of Jimmy Choo's. Now, I do spend maybe an extra 5 minutes in the morning actually thinking about what to wear and how to accessorize it, but I cannot tell you how many compliments I get on my clothes from coworkers of both sexes. Subsequent to my main shopping event, I have utilized Leah's talents to help me find the dreaded swimsuit (I walked away with 5! because I loved them all - this does not happen to me by the way) as well as a pants-search. I have also literally texted Leah from a dressing room with a picture of a prospective dress purchase and received instant feedback! I now feel like I have a much greater level of competence when shopping for clothes, but I think I will soon need another session about how to wear some of the new items I've purchased since the last time Leah's been in my closet. I just wrapped up a second engagement of YLSF and could not be happier. This time I enlisted Leah's "Events" services. I asked her to help me with some outfits for a destination beach wedding. It was March, I was a bit pasty and the idea of pulling together a beach wardrobe was, well, a bit daunting. Again, the process was FUN! First she asked me to gather some pictures of styles I liked so she could get a feel for the overall look I was after. From there we set up a time to meet. When I showed up for our appointment she had already pulled a rack of clothes for me. From there we walked around and identified more pieces to try. Being in my early thirties and stuck with my baby weight for 2 years, I have wasted so much time and money trying to cover myself in larger sized workout clothes, hoping one day I will loose weight and start buying nice cloths again. Miracle just didn't happen. I found Leah when I was desperately trying to get my coming trip together, she is indeed a game-changer. I can definitely recommend Leah's services to anyone who wants to give their personal style a boost. Let me preface this by saying, never, in my years since, did I think I'd find myself getting help with my wardrobe after the age of eight. I became certain at the time that I had ascended beyond those days once I convinced Mom to stop with the Corduroy OshKosh B'gosh Dungarees. Then along came Miss Leah. She was referred to me from another of her fortunate patrons. Initially, I was very skeptical to embark even upon a conversation about the topic of my fashion sense (or rather lack thereof), but right away Leah's pleasant tone and disarming nature quickly subdued all apprehension. Leah has been helping dress me for 5 years now and honestly, I don't know what I'd do without her. We don't go shopping very often, maybe every 18-24 months but when we do, it's a whopper. I always thought I was reasonably fashionable. But when confronted with a sale rack or an entire department of say, Bloomies, I could never figure out where to start. Leah has it nailed down. I gave her an idea and some guidance ahead of time, told her a few brands I liked, my sizes and she went to work. She took a two prong approach - because she knew a sale was coming up at Bloomingdales (she knew they had many of the brands I liked) she did a little online shopping for me first. She compiled a list on Pinterest and then shared it with me to get an even better idea of what I liked and didn't. I ended up buying at least half of it, because she was right on about my tastes. Then we met in the city, after she had power shopped ahead of time and pulled many things she knew I would like (off the sale rack no less). When I arrived there was a large dressing room set aside for me with all the things in it she thought I might like. She has a great eye. Not only did she pick things that looked great together and would work for my job and for going out with some accessories modifications...but she picked things I would not have picked but that I ended up loving. And like the online shopping Pinterest board, I bought a lot of the in store stuff she scoped out, as well. She has a great way of gently pushing you to try something you might not otherwise - because she knows it will look good. And it does! She has a gift, I'm telling you. I've been working with Leah for several years but this last session with her was special because it was 5 months post partum. Many of you mommies can relate that bland colors, loose fitting clothes are your best friend BUT it certainly doesn't make you feel confident and your husband probably doesn't like it either. I hate shopping and can never find anything that fits. However, I accepted a new job that required formal dress, so some shopping was required. I was dreading it! But Leah saved the day! My daughter-in-law gave me time with Leah as a birthday gift and no, she wasn't saying I needed styling (at least I don't think so!) but worded it well, she had enjoyed her time with Leah so much and thought I would too. I was thrilled with the gift, I had seen what Leah did for my daughter-in-law's closet and it was wonderful. That said, I have to admit that I was also a little worried, how was this going to work? My home is far from San Francisco and I'm probably a lot older than most of Leah's clients. I shouldn't have worried, my time with Leah was fabulous, from start to finish. She sent me a questionnaire that asked all the right questions to get me thinking and her started. By the time I met her in Bloomingdales she had two racks full of clothes for me to try on. She had translated my questionnaire answers into lots of fun and useful pieces and found both end-of-season bargains and new season staples. Her approach was great, never pushy, but definitely gentle nudges outside my comfort zone. The result was a suitcase full of clothes that I love and so does my husband. And that wasn't the end of it, after my session Leah sent emails with great ideas for accessories and complimentary pieces. My only regret? I'm posting an updated review to rave about Leah's help getting me fashionably ready for my brother's wedding. I'd never been in a wedding party before and, with the bride, my mom, and other party members being on the east coast and in the midwest, finding the perfect dress was an intimidating task. I couldn't have done it without Leah. She battled changing requirements from the bride and a challenging theme color without batting an eye. Turning 30 this year made me rethink my wardrobe and want to make changes so that I can walk into my closet, pull something out in 10 seconds, and love how I look and feel in it. When I didn't automatically love it, she gently helped me decide and sometimes I just needed a downright straight answer and she gave that too (in a hilarious way :) It was a lot of fun working with her and I never felt pressured in any way. Leah is a wonderful combination of professional, intuitive, down to earth, and creative. She has a real gift for this and it shows. Leah completely honored my wish to only buy sale items and stick to a certain budget and boy did I get the best deals ever. Quality/designer clothes at marginal prices. I would highly recommend Leah's services if you're like me and are paralyzed by indecision when you shop and end up buying something off the sale rack just because it's cheap and "ok", instead of because you love how it makes you feel and is great quality. Having never met with a fashion stylist before I had know idea what to expect when my awesome boyfriend made me an appointment with You Look So Fine. I had a tight deadline, a relatively modest budget and frankly no idea what to wear to an upcoming holiday party. Even before my appointment my mind was immediately put to ease after I received a thoughtful questionnaire Leah had put together to learn about my personal style. By answering her detailed questions the wheels started turning and I began to feel I could articulate my sense of style and what makes me feel beautiful.
