I dislike leaving negative reviews for a business, as I realize it can impact its success or failure. But as someone who formerly frequented this establishment's cafe numerous times as well as having attended a music-related event there, I felt it important to relate my first (and last) experience of attempting to get accommodations there during the Creek Fire, which led to thousands of people being evacuated from their homes. I had always wanted to stay at the Bug as a guest, so I thought what better opportunity than an evacuation to see if they had a vacancy and to potentially enjoy my evacuation time as best as possible. On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 8th, I phoned to see what was available. A seemingly kind woman took my call and explained that they did indeed have vacancies and that it would be alright if I brought my cat, which I was transporting in a carrier. She even said that if I stayed through the weekend (which I planned on doing) they would waive the bump in rates for me. After the phone discussion, I informed the nice lady I would see her within the hour. I drove up from Oakhurst, stopped at the local supermarket in Mariposa for a few things to take to the room, and headed up to Midpines. I should mention that I am partially disabled from a spine condition and was beyond exhausted by the time I made it to the front desk of the bug. I hobbled in on my cane, very glad to finally see an end to my roaming about looking for a place to stay. The "nice lady" to whom I spoke on the phone was nowhere to be found, and I instead was coldly greeted by a young girl and a man, both of whom behaved as if someone had peed in their corn flakes that morning. I was advised that there would be a $200 deposit for my cat (I was not told this on the phone), but was informed it would be returned if there were no damages incurred. This brief exchange was almost hostile on the part of the man, and the man and the younger woman behind the desk continued to regard me as if I had a third eye. There was certainly no warmth to be found, to say nothing of any sympathy for my predicament. I realized that access to some of the rooms is had only by making one's way up very steep flights of steps, and with my condition, I inquired if I could get something a little more easily accessed. The answer was yes, but that the rate would go up by nearly $75. Again, no empathy, no "sorry for your predicament," and continued cold stares. Following this exchange, I decided I did not want to stay at the Bug after all and walked out, with nary a word said by either person who had glowered at me from behind the desk this entire time. About five minutes into my drive back to Mariposa, I decided to call and let them know exactly how I felt about what had transpired. Again, there was no form of an apology or anything -- just silence on the other end of the line. Thus, I feel this review is the only way I can make known what happened to an exhausted and handicapped evacuee at the Bug Hostel. As I explained to the person on the phone when I called back (likely the young woman behind the counter), I will never set foot on their property again and would make sure anyone who wanted to go there, but had not, would hear this tale. read more

We had our wedding at The Bug in October. It could not have been more perfect. Having lodging, catering (food and alcohol), and the venue all in one made it so easy. Caroline was great to work with, so attentive and helpful. All of our guests (even the skeptics who didn't want to "camp" for a wedding) were floored by the quality of the cabins and food, and many said they want to make more trips to The Bug now that they know it's there. Having a wedding at The Bug was like having a village of all our friends for a weekend. It was so much fun, I wish we could do it all again. I cannot recommend The Bug highly enough; I'm sure we'll be back many times in the future. read more

At appointment time one tells us the guy didn't show up to fill it I'm sorry why wouldn't they have checked instead of chatting?! After 20mins I asked where my food was and they didn't even have the ticket anymore. they didn't offer anything for the mistake and just said she couldn't hear me even though she did and wrote my order down. Booked a two-night stay here for a last-minute trip to Yosemite in April. Lodging was comfortable, and each of the cabins have a unique theme. Do note that the picture you see on the website of the cabin you book may not be the cabin that will be assigned to you at check-in. We booked a cabin that we thought was craftsman in style and instead got a cabin that looked like Grandma's house...lace and rose patterned wallpaper. Not something I would have chosen. When we asked about this after seeing the cabin, the response was "yeah...the cabin theme that you booked doesn't even exist anymore". We were able to switch cabins the second night, and got a fun Steampunk themed cabin. I think they should play up the unique themed cabins and update their website to reflect current offerings as we felt this is what made the place stand out from the standard hotel offerings nearby. There is a communal kitchen if you want to bring your own food, or you can choose to dine at their on-site restaurant - which was wonderful! The menu was inventive for what you would expect of the area, and changes daily. Portions were HUGE. read more

Love this place! We decided to stay in a tent cabin right after the first snowfall last week... We brought a space heater and there were down comforters in the unheated tent cabin. We also brought our sleeping bags. A little chilly in the morning and when you went to bed but other than that it was great! The June bug café was darling and we had all our dinners there. Great selection of food. Community showers and restrooms were clean. They have done a nice job with COVID-19 restrictions. I would absolutely stay here again. read more

It is precisely COVID-19 concerns that that have me debating between 2 and 3 stars, and here is my dilemma. The room I stayed in has a very comfortable bed and presents very nicely, until you pull the sheet back. I say sheet like it's a thing. It isn't. The bed is made with two bottom sheets and a down comforter. No top sheet. So this is worrisome. The 3 star optimist says they use two bottom sheets to protect the excellent memory foam mattress. The cynic thinks they turn the room around by removing one of the bottom sheets. The optimist thinks they must wash this down comforter between every guest. The cynic lies awake at night wondering how many people have alternately roasted and froze directly beneath the powerful AC unit, perspiring into this same comforter. The optimist says to himself "this is Covid times, of course they are extra diligent in deep cleaning- a sentiment no doubt echoed by the front desk / management. The cynic, however has had to remove a toothbrush and case from the drawer and dispose of it. Disgusting. And worrisome because it becomes obvious that there is greater cause for cynicism based on this discovery. In normal times, the optimist finds it easy to dismiss stuff like this. In these times, the cynic is headed for a COVID test. If you stay here, you should too. Or should I say "two". read more

super uneven. Service at desk was fine, service in the restaurant very uneven - to the point of rude. Sitting outside at the tables for customers, only to have staff come out to smoke their cigarettes right next to us. Smoking also a challenge at my room - the next door occupant was a heavy smoker which meant I couldn't leave my door open to let fresh air in and couldn't get the windows open. The lay-out of the place makes it hard to designate smoking areas, but that is really what needs to happen so those who actually want to breath the fresh air can. Food was fine - lots of it, and vegetarian & vegan options - kinda pricey for what it was, but captive audience, and equivalent to prices in town. The sack lunches are a good option, and beer/wine prices reasonable. They have different decor for the rooms which ranges from mildly charming to downright weird. Wi-fi is an issue, but seemed most consistent in the restaurant. Ditto what others have said about the inverse ratio of rooms/beds to parking and the overflow parking being ridiculously located especially if you arrive at night. I thought it was strange that the beds did not have a top sheet, possibly they change the comforter cover with each guest, but this definitely gave me pause. And then I got mysterious bites on my foot and torso and they couldn't be bothered to even apologize to hear that in the email. Just "our housekeeping will check." So here it is for all of you to decide if it's worth your $. The Bug Loop trail around the property is nice, however it definitely has some steep and uneven parts, and the map and trail signage make it not so simple to navigate at points. I wouldn't recommend it for young children or people who are looking for a short easy loop. Lots of international travelers here, so obviously it's a draw for its ease of access to Yosemite and non-car transportation. It really has an old campground feel to it - good and bad. I know that it's really tough to keep places like this going with the challenges of seasonality, fires, floods, etc. So it's not the worst place, it's not the best place - if you go just set your expectations appropriately and you'll be fine. read more

Yosemite Bug is pretty sweet. We paid about $50 per night on Labor Day weekend to stay in a four-person tent cabin. It was just the two of us and our dog, so we had plenty of room. Staying in a tent cabin, you *will* get dusty. But for crying out loud, people, you're supposed to be pretending to camp!! The dirt is part of the ruse... The Bug provides sheets, pillows, warm blankets and towels. The cabins all have one electric socket and a light. You have to walk to a common co-ed shower/laundry area if you choose the cabin option. OR... (I'll let you in on a little secret)... you can pay $10 for a whole day at the spa and use their luxurious showers (complete with bath products) instead. The spa is really, really nice! The restaurant plays many roles: 1. Cheap hot breakfast cafe 2. Cold lunch bar 3. Moderately nice dinner restaurant with a limited menu of meals made with local ingredients, and a selection of wine/beer and desserts The cafe is lovely--it has a fireplace, a creekside room, internet and board games available, and a social (but not too social) atmosphere. If you've never been to Yosemite and you don't like the idea of driving for 2+ hours each day to get to and from the park, I recommend staying inside the park (if you can get a coveted reservation). But for budget travelers and returnees, I highly recommend The Bug! read more

Pros: great common kitchen space, we had an awesome dinner, the beds were comfortable, and the blankets were actually warm enough for me! Most neighbors are very kind and friendly. This place is cute and quaint! Very rustic! The tent cabins are clean and nice. The food at the grill is pretty good too. Bathrooms are very nice and a/c in there is cool. The staff at the office is not friendly they seemed disgruntled anytime we asked questions. I asked for the closest water source like a river, they mentioned some hike to "the hornets nest" but didn't mention THE MERCED RIVER half an hours drive from the resort!!! We had to downgrade to a smaller cabin for our last night. The staff kept telling us different things: first we were told we could check out of our tent cabin and move to the new tent cabin at 10 am but when we checked out they said we had to wait until 3 pm that afternoon. They told us the shuttle to Yosemite was 45 minutes it was closer to 1.5 hours each way. Side note: Sometimes the YARTS shuttle a/c breaks down so check before boarding if you care on the way back from the park (no choice on the way there due to limited shuttles). It was unbearably hot at the resort we are talking 90s-100s Yosemite was 90 at the hottest with nice breezes and cooler temps at higher elevations. At the bug we had to downgrade to a smaller tent cabin the last night of our stay because they were "booked" but the tent cabin next to us the first two nights was empty. (Perhaps needed maintenance?). The Yosemite tent cabins are the closest to the bathrooms but, right next to a junk storage area visible from the cabins. The lower tent cabins Nevada Falls were faaaar from the bathrooms. This site is nice all in all it was fine for what it was. Just disappointed by the office staff. read more

Shared kitchen is legit AF, three gas stove/ovens, two microwaves, plenty of prep space. Depending on construction traffic 35-60 min to Yosemite front gate. Can't go wrong here. read more

There is a lot of different options - from cheap beds in shared dorm rooms to a little more expensive (but still very affordable) private rooms with private bathrooms. The rooms are beautifully decorated, very clean and well kept, the beds are comfortable. The whole resort is spread over a hillside, it's beautiful and peaceful. The cafe serves great food. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It's a 45 minute drive to Yosemite Valley. So if you'r planning a trip to Yosemite - this is the place to stay! read more

I never write reviews, but needed to for this resort. Driving in at night was dangerous as the roads were narrow on a hillside and not lit. The breakfast buffet was lacking, The pillows were like concrete, our shower was the worst!!! The water pressure was so bad I opted not to wash my hair or I'd be in there forever! When the shower was running there was a strange clanking/banging sound under our cabin. And during the night there was a loud generator sound outside our bedroom window. The third day we were there the power and water shut off all day. So we had to cook everything we had left in the shared kitchen so our food would spoil. The only positives I have were the trails around the resort. And our cabin had a great view. Lastly not the resorts fault. But there was a rockslide down the road. So instead of what should have been an hour to Yosemite, turned into over a 3 hr trip to Yosemite read more

We stayed here in July 2012. It did take us a while to be able to check in and the girl checking us in was not the most outgoing. My wife and I had the tent cabin up the hill. BEWARE---huge climb up the stairs if you stay here. This was difficult with luggage. The food at and service at the Cafe were marvellous! We would eat here again in a heartbeat. Overall quiet, friendly family centered. Next time we would stay at one of the lower more accessible cabins. We found the price to be great for the cabin. It's about a thirty minute drive back to the park though which seems long after a full day but can't beat the price. Eat at the Cafe! read more

Jessica has checked me in twice and she is friendly, gives great directions to find my cabin and highlights all the needed info. Including the kitchen code.The Lodge has great food, yet the Hostel has a functional kitchen if you want to do it yourself with large kitchen coolers and shelves to place your food. Yosemite park is a beautiful hour drive from the Hostel, the YART, a local bus stop at the entrance is also available. One more thing...there is more...a great massage and hot tub experience is available...its a miracle I remembered to go to the park! read more

I really like this place. We stayed in a cabin on stilts with a bathroom and a swamp cooler. Beds we comfy like a cruise ship bed. It has hostel set ups that are really cool. We utilized the kitchen and it is set up nice. There is a large firepit that you can get some smores going. Each night family groups had one raging. Look. This place isn't brand new, but it gets it right in the right places. Oh, by the way, the food is amazing! It's not cheap, but it is way better food than you think when you roll in. Went there with a friend. We were out hiking most of the time so I couldn't say much about the services or the functions per se. However, during our checkout, we found out (unfortunately for us) that the lady at the front desk was quick to lose her temper. She started yelling to my friend for no reason, perhaps since she was swamped by whatever else she was trying to deal with. Upon asking her to calm down, she told me to get out. Really, to get out, for asking her to calm down? I haven't seen anyone with worse temper when they're not drunk. Love this place! It's so charming and the lodging was rugged, but just enough glam where you can shower and have some luxuries of being home. As avid backpackers and campers my husband and I definitely appreciate when we stay in places where we can have that harmony of both. The cafe is delicious and extremely convenient to grab a coffee/breakfast burrito before driving to the park, and then a late dinner once returning. 10/10 recommend especially to the backpacker ending their trip and needing something a little more cozy than a tent. read more

This place will definitely receive my return business for future vacations. I've had nothing but the best service here. The staff is a great bunch of people here, no angry looks or bad attitudes as some would describe in earlier reviews. Sleeping accommodations: I stayed in the hostel portion of the resort. If you have never stayed in one by yourself or with your mates, its an experience on its own. Here you get to meet people traveling from all over the world, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, France. Truly amazing people to have a beer and dinner with. Though the cleaning staff disregarded one time to provide me with a new dry towel, its not enough to bring this whole place down. Bunk beds are comfortable and warm, and even if they weren't, you would not mind after a long ass day at the national park, hiking the Upper Yosemite Falls. Food/amenities: Coming the cafe was a better part of my day. The dinner menu changes according to the amount of people staying at the resort but the food is overall great. Cooked to perfection and according to order, the breakfast menu is great getting ready for that long trial hike. I chose the American breakfast every time and it did not let me down. Best pumpkin pie I've had. The kitchen staff takes pride in their food and it shows. This place reminds me of homestyle cooking. If Aspen is on for the dinner shift, be very nice to her. Great person and is the definition of customer service as is everyone else. She even helped me out with getting the firepit started. Harold in the spa was nothing but kind and generous. $12 for an entire day pass for the hot tub was a great way to relax after a tiring hike. Come here to get away from life in the city, enjoy the company of traveling and local personalities, and take the solitude all in. I will not be forgetting my first time here. As a local, I say stay away from this place. Spa isn't very hot. If the jets aren't on, you can see dead skin floating around. The restrooms are absolutely disgusting. It's $12 until 10PM, so if you show up after work at 6PM, that $12 will get you 4 hours. Show up at 10AM, you'll get 12 hours for the same price. The restaurant food I found bland, yet very expensive. Parking is very limited Employees sitting in the hot tub, cussing about and mouthing their liberal views. When I wrote a check for here, I was barked at by the front office saying "We don't take checks. Especially from locals like you" Whoever owns this hell hole, treat the locals good. I have since recommended many other places to tourists, your establishment is no longer one of them :) read more

I have frequented this establishment for many years now. I have always loved the spa, the restaurant, and the hiking trails. I hike first, then I would go to the spa (when it was open) and eat at the awesome restaurant. The staff is always very nice to me. This past week while heading to the 3rd upper parking lot for one of my 2 weekly hikes I encountered the rudest land owner ever. I was told if I didn't pay for a room I wasn't welcome on the trails. He let his dog go after my ankle and threatened me with tresapassing charges. My family and I have lived in this area for 14 years and in all of our time here we have never encountered anyone so pompous and rude. I haven't ever been kicked off of a hiking trail while living here either. read more

Have been going here for 5 years now, and always a great stay. They offer spa services, which are great after a day of hiking in the Yosemite valley. Everybody is so easy going, helpful, and friendly. Amazing food! They offer youth hostel, but the cabins are quite charming, and the furniture is placed with loving care. It is very quite, so quite, you might want to bring a fan, or whit noise machine. Very limited wifi access, understand, this is a place to unplug! It's about a very scenic 35 minute drive to the side entrance to Yosemite. read more

Place is okay, not much activities to do especially for kids. Cafeteria's staff are okay except for my experience last June 22-23(Saturdayand Sunday) dinner time, the person taking the orders was sarcastic and a bit rude! Need to be trained on customer service. Food was okay. Coffee was not great at all. Food were served timely. Need to have more soup variations. Front desk( guy) was not so friendly though I have to complement Sos who really provide good customer service Need more parking space. My boyfriend and I were here over Thanksgiving weekend, and we loved it! We stayed one night in an uninsulated tent cabin which was cold but comfortable, and two nights in the Wawona cabin which really was a romantic treat. (There was no TV, by the way, and that suited us just fine.) Some people staying in the tent cabins might be put off by the mixed-gender shared bathroom with concrete floor. (It wasn't a problem for us, but we appreciated having a nice private bathroom after we upgraded.) The Bug publishes an inexpensive Yosemite guide which we found to be very useful. Kudos to the kitchen staff for creating healthy and delicious meals with excellent vegetarian and vegan choices, with numerous puzzles and games available. We also enjoyed the spa with its hot tub (no nudity allowed) and a fantastic yoga class on Sunday evening, and we appreciated that no one seemed the least disturbed by our possibly-too-obvious gayness. read more

Seems like most reviews are for the private rooms, which do seem nice. We stayed two nights in a heated tent cabin, which was perfectly comfortable. What was not comfortable was the shared bathroom, which was first of all located quite far from our cabin, and second of all contained only one toilet, sink and shower for four cabins! What was honestly unhygienic was the sign to "only flush when necessary." Fine I get it, we're in a drought here in California and all that, and maybe it's fine in a private bathroom you share with your family, but in a shared bathroom with only one stall between 10+ people you are encouraging people to leave their business unflushed? Disgusting. (And don't even get me started on the lack of toilet seat covers in a shared bathroom...) The husband and I were unpleasantly surprised on our first morning to find that the shower did not have hot water at 5am. We both took icy showers, and proceeded to walk back to our cabin (all 500 feet) in 30something degree weather. You'd better believe that we didn't shower there again, despite being tired, achy and sweaty after taking a day long hike in the park the next day. Another issue was with the cafe, where we picked up a lunch to go on our first day. We were rushing to get to Yosemite to meet our friends and take a hike before we lost the light and didn't want to waste time eating when we got there so we thought it might be a good idea to pick up a trail lunch. This was a sack lunch where the sandwich items were packed separately so as to not get soggy. Good idea in concept, and something I would think they would make ahead of time so it could be a grab and go thing for their customers. But instead we waited over 30 min for it to be prepared, the amount of time it would have taken to eat a quick pizza at the curry village cafe. A waste of our time, and a failure of the concept frankly. I was hoping to give the bug a rave review. The cafe, the amenities (Spa, live music, etc) all seemed great on paper but at our price point and for our requirements (a comfortable place to stay in close proximity to Yosemite National Park, our actual destination) we'd have much rather taken up a tent cabin in curry village, where the facilities are better and we could have spent much more time in the park itself.
