I am extremely disappointed with my daughter's experience at during her senior year…read more My daughter was an AP student throughout high school and worked incredibly hard academically. During her senior year, our lives changed overnight when she suffered a heart attack at home due to a heart condition we did not know she had been born with. Paramedics had to revive her, and she remained unconscious in the hospital for several days. Her recovery took months. Throughout this time, I stayed in contact with the school and informed her teachers and counselors about her condition and hospitalization. Most of her teachers were kind, supportive, and understanding, and I will always appreciate that. Unfortunately, one teacher treated my daughter in a way that was completely unacceptable. Despite knowing what my daughter had gone through, this teacher refused to allow her to make up missed assignments from the time she was hospitalized. My daughter was only half a credit away from graduating, and if she had been allowed to complete the work, she would have graduated and walked with her class. Instead, the teacher failed my daughter. She accused her of lying about her medical condition, dismissed both me and my daughter when we tried to speak with her, and even ignored the counselor who fought for my daughter because she knew everything our family had been through. Because of this, my daughter did not get to walk at graduation after surviving a life-threatening medical emergency. As a mother, that still hurts me deeply to this day. Watching her classmates graduate while she was denied that moment over what ultimately became just one day of summer school was heartbreaking and unnecessary. Thankfully, my daughter eventually completed summer school and graduated during the summer, but the emotional damage from how this situation was handled never left us. No student recovering from a traumatic medical emergency should ever be treated with such lack of compassion, empathy, or humanity. I hope this school takes situations like this more seriously in the future and ensures that no other family has to experience what we went through. By the way, the teacher that didn't allow her to make up her missing assignment while at the hospital was her reading teacher.She started off with the male reading teacher and that he was really helpful. But he was transferred to the ninth grade center, so she ended up with a female reading teacher and this female reading teacher discriminated needed my daughter because of her race, she says she was hard on her.
