My introduction to York Hospital was when I drove to the Sanford facility to fill out paperwork requesting medical records. My paperwork was never sent out so on the day of my appointment my medical records were not where they needed to be. The medical assistant on the day of my appointment did a search and wound up having to personally order my medical records on the day of my appointment. She was conscientious and caring and she made things go in the right direction. The building signs and directional postings on the York campus need work. On the day of my first appointment in the York facility I could feel my blood pressure rising when I could not find the right building where my appointment was scheduled and then inside the receptionist was not in her window: I heard her in the back office referring to me as elderly. Awkward! When she did finally come to the window she seemed indifferent and she gave me the wrong directives to get me to my appointment which by that time I was late for.. She did finally direct me to a volunteer who took me to the right reception area. The inside office staff in the specialists' offices are friendly. The specialist who I had the appointment with told me that everybody complains about the signage on the York campus. She said that she was going to relay that information about way finding again to the administration. I've had appointments with the lab and with several specialists York system, and each one has been wonderful. read more

This hospital is very unclear about their billing and will make you pay for THEIR mistakes. Recently my wife visited this hospital and needed an ultrasound. About two weeks later we visited her gynecologist to review the ultrasound, and found out it was unclear and she needed another one. After taking another one and finding out she had an ovarian cyst. She got the right hormones and eventually it went away. The issue is this. After each of these visits she was paying a 3rd party $200-400 for this work. But months after, we received calls from York Hospital saying we still owe $3,000. No receipts, no bills, just a call. We needed to ask for all these bills just to see what we owed. We owed $3,000 after her insurance already covered, and weirdly, that first ultrasound's bill was there. We attempted a dispute against that one bill, since the hospital didn't take a clear one and needed a second. But they denied our dispute, and their reasoning was ridiculous. "The first ultrasound concluded there needed to be a second." Probably because it wasn't clear enough? This hospital is damn near a scam I would never recommend going there. Care quality has lowered in quality the last few years. They have let good medical people go this summer. The new Cath Lab and offices have replaced patient care facilities. Walk-in care discontinued and x-ray stopped in Kittery. Long waits to get appointments on telephone. Patient care not a priority. My Emergency Care in Portsmouth Hospital was much better. York Hospital SUCKS! More specifically the business end. I received a small bill ($40.50) 18 months after date of service. I called to ask what this was for. No one was able to tell me. They said they'd check and get back to me. Nothing. They sent more bills, I made more calls. I just wanted to know what I was paying for. I decided to go online and just pay it. Low and behold, "No Balance Due". Little did I know, this was sent to Collections (Jan 2025)!! And Collections didn't call me until Nov 1! We are now in the process of changing all of our healthcare needs to Wentworth Douglass (Mass General. They are very professional and much easier to deal with than York Hospital. read more

My husband has total knee replacement and it's been a year. His knee swells & hurts & the surgeon doesn't care & won't address it. The office said they would make a follow-up call, then make an appt & they never did. Half the things they said they would do, they haven't. Very disappointed & also worried of something is wrong with the surgery. Oh, & don't forget about all the clicking & popping noises the knee makes. Terrible operation & service. No over night stay. sometimes you're on vacation your 2nd grader decides he's a dare devil and jumps off a climbing structure at the playground. and then you have to head to the local hospital and you are greeted by the warmest kindest staff. then your child turns into a wild honey badger because he realizes it's a hospital and not a regular doctors office and he doesn't believe you when you tell him he's not going to need a shot (smart kid cause I don't know). and the nurse keeps smiling (I didn't catch her name because it was hard to hear over the incessant screaming of said wild honey badger) and is patient despite the fact your kid has turned psychotic and is screaming because he's convinced the pulse oxometer is going to hurt. then dr Collin comes in and he's beyond kind and gentle. and juniper the xray tech comes in softly and explains everything so gently so the kid stops behaving like his arm has completely fallen off. then you get the xray results (broken foot) crutches and recommendations and you leave within 2 hours if your arrival. This hospital is dangerously understaffed on weekends and at night. My mother came here via ambulance with a severe heart emergency on a Friday night in the summertime. They only had ONE doctor in the entire hospital. And when they moved her from the ER to a room upstairs, they only had ONE nurse on the entire floor. It turns out that my mother was having a heart attack. It gets worse. They said they don't do any imaging on the weekends other than X-rays and CT scans. If you need an ultrasound or an echocardiogram or an MRI on the weekend, you're out of luck. Think of how important that is in the context of a possible heart attack or stroke: you can't afford to wait DAYS for those tests. To make matters worse, the doctors were cold, unkind, dismissive, and had communication skills ranging from mediocre to poor. You'll see the words "Loving Kindness" all over this hospital, but you'll only receive that from the nurses and CNAs (who were wonderful, albeit overworked and there were far too few of them). The doctors were HORRIBLE to my elderly mother, who was already terrified, and their interactions with her made it 10x worse. They were very rude and dismissive to me as well when I attempted, very politely, to advocate for my mother. On top of all that, numerous mistakes were made -- mistakes that could have been catastrophic or even fatal if I had not been there to catch them. This beautiful hospital is very charming and cozy, and it has awesome food. But if you or your loved one is having a heart attack or stroke, do you want a resort hotel, or do you want a fully-staffed hospital capable of doing everything to correctly diagnose and treat the condition? We had to take my daughter to the ER on a Sunday, two days into our vacation per the pediatricians recommendations. All the staff in the ER were beyond friendly and professional. We were in and out of the ER with a Bells Palsy diagnosis and a three dimensional approach to treat it. Ryan in the ER calmly answered all of our questions and had a great bedside manner with a young teenage girl. So grateful to all the staff. Very lucky to encounter such a peaceful, professional and friendly hospital. Very grateful to York Hospital ER. Don't waste your time going to any York Hospital walk-ins!! They don't do temperatures. The one in So Berwick doesn't do x-rays so they send you to Berwick location...no temperature taking. No x-rays...send you home. My mom ended up going to Wentworth Douglass Hospital ER and was diagnosed with pneumonia (they did all the tests, temps, xrays). Hello i had a resection operation on my prostate this was done by Arial Fredrick first i do not think it was necessary to begin with. The operation caused a old hernia to come back. This WAS NOT IDENTIFIED by Arial or her partner Douglass Bennet after looking at my now swollen scrotum ( the swelling was more then simply from the surgery) Douglas Bennet simply stated " this happens to a lot of guys" He did not offer any suggestions off how to remedy the situation. Both Arial and Douglass Bennet are AWFUL doctors !!!!!!!!!!! fortunately Ariel has retired however Douglass Bennet is practicing at York Hospital If your primary Doctor refers u to Douglas Bennet RUN THE OTHER WAY AND CROSS THE BORDER TO NH AND DR Hernan Altamar with Portsmouth regional hosp he diagnosed me right away and am going to have yet another surgery to fix the hernia. read more

I went to York for detoxification from alcohol. All the staff were so supportive, kind and passionate..I had a private room and the staff were considerate while we slept, very prompt if I rand the buzzer..gladly offering anything you need with a smile. All the nursing staff, financial advisers and continuing treatment( The Recovery Center) made my plan for sobriety seamless.Dr.Trevor Bradon was lovely and personable..He is genuine! These guys were amazing. My husband had previously been diagnosed with pancreatitis and the previous hospital assumed he was an alcoholic no matter how we tried to explain he wasn't. Dr Brayden listened to us and ran some tests. He determined his overall health was not consistent with an alcoholic lifestyle. Even though the cat scan didn't show gall stones he did a sonogram and found gall stones. Dr Buzdon removed the gall bladder the next day and his recovery has been amazing. Doctors and nurses were professional, thorough, and personable. They hospital was very careful because of CoVid but allowed me to see my husband. He was released after four days and is doing amazing. Wouldn't recommend coming here for any emergencies, not a busy night and my mother has been sitting here for 4 hours with no sign of a doctor after getting X-rays done. My father was the only visitor allowed although he has Parkinson's disease and shouldn't be making decisions or being alone for that long. A company probably shouldn't boast a position of "Loving Kindness if their employees can't deliver on it. I was admitted to their ER because I had a stroke and needed to do a CAT scan and an MRI. After lying in bed for several hours I decided to walk the hall a little bit. I saw my nurse sitting in a room and I decided to ask her a question when another nurse exclaimed that I was not supposed to be in the "'Nurses station" so I started to move to the door. On the way out I passed my nurse who was sitting by the door and asked her when we could expect to see my test results when the nurse who exclaimed "you're not supposed to be in the Nurses station grabbed me by the throat and pushed me out the door. I called the Hospital Administrator's office and told them that I had been harassed by one of their nurses. The Nurse Administrator came to my room and said she would investigate. She came back after speaking to Abby, the nurse who physically pushed me out of the Nurses Station and my Nurse who witnessed it, She concluded that harasment hadn't occurred because it wasn't Abby's intent. Well, it may not have been her intent but the facts are not disputed - she put her hands on my neck and physically pushed me out of the door. Fortunately I had to be transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland because York doesn't have a Neurologist on staff. The people in the lab in Kittery are completely incompetent. I have a heart condition and need to have my blood checked regularly for different things. Twice I have gone and later found out they either forgot to test for what I was there for or tested for the wrong thing. This is my life they are playing with. Do not go here for mental health reasons. I was signed in against my will, held for five days and not told anything. I never knew if it was day or night or what time it was. No clock in the ER room. I was not told I could not leave until I tried to go. I asked repeatedly for my clothes and purse. They were not given to me and nurses only told me, " I'll see." I walked out in my gown, no choice, and the police were called. I was dragged back in on my knees, put in restraints and shot up with something to put me out. Not good when you need knee replacements. I found their lack of communication and treatment did not fit any loving kindness motto. They should call it, we will treat you worse than an animal for a motto.You check in and cannot check out. I was never asked if I did anything to end up there and was falsely accused of statements I never made. I have never returned to this hell-hole and never will. I give it minus five stars. read more

July 1 , my son sprained or fractured his ankle. Went to emergency room, got x-rays and had it checked out. They said they couldn't be sure if it was sprained or if there was a break . They gave him some kind of air cast or something like that. He asked about the pain, they told him take an aspirin. My wife asked later and they nastily said , I told him take an aspirin. In summary, they couldn't read the X-rays, they offered no comfort or relief from pain. The visit was a total waste of time, money and medical attention. read more

The food is awful. There are not many vegan/vegetarian options. They are extremely understaffed. I was admitted and waited more than 3 hours for my discharge to be processed. I would recommend not going there for mental reasons. They are not fully equipped for mental patients. Hospital is very loud at night and workers are very unprofessional. My experiences have been with YH Women's Health Clinic(Wells&York locations) and their labs. Upon first impression, all staff(reception, nurses, and Dr's) were welcoming and informative. However, after several appointments, I've had more issues than positive experiences. I've been blessed with an easy, healthy pregnancy besides for one hiccup(blood disorder). This blood disorder is hereditary, which I brought up at my first appointment knowing that pregnancy could put me at risk of clots. First round of blood tests was performed after this appointment, including testing for blood disorder, which I didn't receive results for with positive diagnosis until my next appointment(1 month later). I was referred to a Neonatal specialist while at my 2nd monthly appointment to figure out how best to treat diagnosis. The Neonatologist was with Maine Med (that took my Dr's staff over a MONTH to set, and wasn't successfully scheduled until after my 3rd monthly appointment because it had been forgotten). The specialist in Portland was excellent; he sent an order for further blood testing back to my Dr. with YH. This testing wasn't done until after my 4th appointment. YH Dr said they would order testing by fax and I could stop by lab to do anytime, which he forgot to order so when I arrived at the lab I ended up waiting an hour just for the order to arrive, and come to find out he had ordered the wrong tests- they tested for my original diagnosis again instead of the additional blood clotting deficiency tests needed. I never received a call with the results, so I assumed all was negative, and this mistake wasn't noticed or addressed until my 5th appointment. Also, this appointment was scheduled in Wells(written by receptionist on appt. card) and when I arrived in Wells, they told ME that I had made the mistake somehow and was supposed to be in York, so I would have to drive over immediately to be seen by a different doctor(which I ended up waiting forever to see.) I've also had a recurring infection detected by urine screen that I never receive results for until my next appointment which require antibiotics for treatment. There is absolutely no communication between staff members which really creates potentials for error considering the fact that you have to see all doctors part of the practice in case yours isn't available for delivery. The fact that I haven't received a single call about any lab results is not only troublesome, but dangerous! Whenever I have tried to call in to get results/answers, nobody has any information for me. Honestly, it doesn't seem like they can get much of anything right at this point. I've decided to transfer to Mercy Hospital, and after requesting to have my medical records released and faxed so I can resume care with Back Cove, I'm still waiting 2 weeks later for something that supposedly would be addressed within 48 hours. Trying to call and get an answer about the status is next to impossible because the reception in York transfers you to any answering service possible(triage, prescription refills) before even hearing out your questions. I honestly didn't anticipate prenatal care being this difficult for someone that has minimal needs. I would highly encourage you to seek out a different medical practice and avoid the frustration. read more

I brought my daughter to the York Emergency Department because she was emotionally distraught due to issues at school. As we sat in the waiting room, I looked around at the waterfall, the children's play house, the support columns designed to look like trees, and those magnificent, loving, sculptured hands that met us when we first walked in and thought, "Who's paying for all this?" Then we were called in to see the triage nurse. We were met by a gruff, insensitive individual who was rude and very much in a rush. Again, I looked around - I couldn't find the "Loving Kindness" anywhere. The ED looked like a child's fantasy with rooms that looked like cottages and clouds painted on the ceiling. We were shown to a room and the nurse told my daughter to give up her clothing, including her shoes, and, "Put this on". She then left the room. We had no idea what was going on and my daughter was in a panic because she thought she had to stay in the hospital. Who runs the show here, Walt Disney? Oh, and about the smiles and all the compassion, we didn't see any of it. It was a horrible experience. I wouldn't go back for a bandaid. LC read more

We love york hospital, I gave birth to my son there and had a great experience, my OBGYN is through them. I have been admitted to the hospital a few times we love most of the ER docs!! I felt I am cared for well better then when we lived in CT and we had to deal with there horrible hospital care. Both my son and I have been to the ER or walk in clinic. Time to time you have a long wait time in the ER but now that they have opened up the walk in clinics in York and a few years ago the one in Kittery it has cut that time down. We also use many other specialist/ doctors associated with YH and love them all! We also get all our prescriptions from York Hospital apothecary and we love Chuck the Pharmacists, he is always putting smiles on everyone's face. The food is great, sometimes I stop in for lunch because it's so good, the kitchen staff is kind and friendly. If your looking for a good hospital with great doctors and nurses you have found it so look no further. read more
