This is by far my favorite library in/near New York City. PROS This library is accessible via public transportation and there's street parking. Multiple Westchester Bee lines stop within a 5-10 minute walk to the library. Metronorth stops across the street from the library. Street parking is metered. There is no free street parking in the area. So bring your quarters. I don't know how's parking during the week, but on the weekends you can always find a spot. The location is great because you get some amazing views of the Hudson River from the third and fourth floors of the library. It's really relaxing to look up from my books or laptop and see nothing but greenery and a ship cruising on the water. It makes my work/study sessions here very relaxing and thus more productive. The building is very clean. The exterior and lobby are always litter free. The interior of the library is very nice and clean. They offer a wealth of free stuff -- from study rooms and meeting rooms (by the way no library in NYC offers this. :-( ) to computers. Oh, and there's a ton of books. This library is huge, so they have a lot of everything. They even have a space for teens to play video games for free. In the lobby, they post their events for the day. I haven't been to any of their events, but they seem to offer a lot of events daily, at least 8. I found the staff here very accommodating. I usually visit weekend mornings/early afternoons, and I noticed that the staff (from security to the librarians) are very nice and professional. CONS The WiFi is spotty. Sometimes that's a good thing because it forces me to write my reports for work without the distraction of YouTube or Google. Why do I goggle the weirdest stuff when I'm working -- like "how high can cats jump?" and "what's the best pokemon?" Any who, I digress. So, the WiFi is spotty at the Riverfront library, so I can't research or pull up my Google Drive documents while I'm here. I have to do my reports very old-school -- on Microsoft Word. SMH.

Ask the Community - Yonkers Public Library: Riverfront Library

How is the neighborhood is it safe and is there parking near the library?

Yes. The neighborhood is safe. They've revamped the entire waterfront and continue to improve on the area. There is ample street parking that always seems to be filled up but if you want close parking, just sit in your car for a few minutes and a… Read more

It has 4 floors, but in the 3rd and 4th floor you are able to see great views of the Palisades and new luxury apartments.

Been coming here since the early 1980's and whether I worked at a desk inside or borrowed a book, they always had what I needed - I have to admit that, even though at the time (as a kid) I despised the library. Came here intermittently now and then to look for a book here and there, but did notice this place did give itself a facelift internally more than once over the years. Looks much better in both the adult and the children section than it did when my young(ER) self inhabited here. Been coming here a lot more recently so my son can take books out for his daily reading assignments from school. They have most of what he has been looking for and despite the area being a children's section, it's decently maintained. The kid's area has computers for them to use and even a play area for the toddlers. It's not as quiet as it used to be when I was told to "shhhhhhh" long ago. Times have changed. They have music and dvds (for both child and parent) you can borrow if you choose to - kind of reminds me of the decade ago and beyond movie rental business. Of course the books for both are plentiful. Staff has been friendly and helpful. They do have plenty of parking, but at certain times - especially after the 5pm hour - they have gatherings or classes here and the parking lot becomes massively full. For the parents who like to blame the library for not having a book that the local school assigned to their child - blame the school since they assigned 1 book title for over 30 kids. That's happened before and I usually just save myself the trouble and buy the book. Last year I heard a parent yelling at someone in there for not having the book - not the library's fault if someone else got there first and checked it out. Overall a great library in the area. Certainly worth your time.

I take my granddaughter for story time every Tuesday morning. She is 20 months old and she loves it! The staff aims to please. After enrolling my granddaughter for story time, they called me the night before it was due to start to remind us.

With a great…read moresupport system of friends (many of them) who genuinely cared about me, I had an awesome time. And, Butler Library added to the positive experience in that first year of school. With tons to study for on continuous exams that had no end except when the semester ended, Butler library definitely came in handy. My typical routine after class and clinical rotation at a New York hospital was to pack my belongings from my room, change into comfy clothes, and get on the subway from 168th where I headed down to 116th intentionally for Butler library. Then, as I entered into the library and passed the security guard, I routinely went into the Cafe and loaded up on either a hot tea or coffee and plenty of fruit and food to prepare for an evening of studying. Thanks to those hours of studying on a day-to-day basis during the school week, I ACED my exams in 5 weeks of the Childbearing rotation. Had I stayed for another 5 weeks for the Medical-Surgical rotation, rather than taking a LOA, I might have performed just as well on the exams. I didn't get to stay, though, and I had an abrupt leave from the school. My digressions isn't what is most important. What is most important out of my story as a first year student at the beautiful Columbia University campus is that I discovered Butler library at some point in the school year and studying at the library was so instrumental in helping me do well on my school exams.

The space is beautiful, but since I've been here last, they have started pumping some of sort "air…read morefreshener" through the HVAC. If you are sensitive to chemicals and fragrances, I guess you're screwed. Left with a stink in my clothes. I can't believe that students are okay with this imposed pollution.
