Located down a long alleyway in Islands Brygge is the brand new fitness studio, YO STUDIOS. YO…read moreSTUDIOS officially launched at the end of January 2017 and so far, they offer a wide variety of fitness classes (yoga, barre, cardio and dance) that will get the blood pumping and get you sweating. The studio is very modernly decorated with a clean Nordic minimalistic feel. The decor is not distracting and makes the studio feel very calm. They also have a little butik at the far end of the studio to showcase their YO branded active wear. My only problem with the studio and basically, my only problem with place itself, is its small size. I assume the owners wanted to start out small and then transition into another space once they've grown their clientele, which is absolutely fine. But for the more popular classes, they might want to re-examine the max. limit. It's really annoying when you're trying to focus on your form/movement but have to be constantly worried that you're gonna run into someone else because the class is so full. In addition, the changing room is also pretty small and easily gets crowded, especially when classes are changing. But I'm not sure there is an easy solution to that. But for me, the classes and instructors are what earns YO STUDIOS 5 stars. I could easily watch some work out videos in the comforts of my own home but having that in-person instructor and their energy to guide your work out is what makes it worth it to come to a studio. The vibe of the studio and instructors are very laidback, friendly and welcoming so you don't feel intimidated but when it comes to the workout, they will definitely kick your a** (but in the best way possible). I also like how they utilize an online system and mobile app to reserve spots for classes and for check in. It makes registering and checking out classes super convenient. They also have special deals for membership and a free, one time 'test' class to check out the studio. But I would definitely recommend taking advantage of their 1 month unlimited pass deal for 199kr. It's totally worth it.

The staff are awesome, though I've only ever worked with Shamir. He's patient and understanding, and he drives his classes hard (which is good). After class he'll sit and talk to people about their experiences and offer advice. I'm only giving it 3 stars because of the crowd, the pricing, and the cancellation policy. To be fair, I go to the Sunday afternoon class, but it's so crowded that you often touch the people next to you when you're doing a wide pose. It's nearly wall-to-wall people. Plus all the additional people make the room even hotter and more humid. I almost passed out last class and went through my entire 32oz water bottle. People were dropping out of the poses like flies. The costs are nuts. A drop-in class and towel/mat rental come to 275dkk... for an hour-long class. Maybe this is standard for hot yoga in Denmark, but it felt unreasonable to me. I signed up for the membership thinking it would be cheaper, per class. I see other reviews about a 14-day trial period, but I wasn't offered that. The once-per-week class is ~480 and I bought my own mat at Tiger. The mats they have there are expensive - I remember the towels they have running 400dkk but forget the mat purchase price. And lastly, the cancellation. I'm moving to another gym because work gives me a discount. There is a cancellation fee at HYC of 89dkk, AND you must pay for another month. I was not told this when I signed up for the membership, because I assumed they would be more customer-friendly. So it's almost the end of August, and I have to pay for all of September as well. I went back and asked for my membership to end at the end of August (since I didn't know if have to pay for an extra month), and the email reply was like "I'm sorry you were unaware of our cancellation policy." ...ARE you sorry? I feel like there's no technical reason for them to be unable to end my membership in August, right? I mean you just hit a key and it's done. They have it specifically built that you must wait a month. It's very frustrating. Either way, I suppose I'll ride out my month and keep sweating it out before I say goodbye.

Look, I just don't want to chant gibberish to connect with the universe, pray to Hindu gods or clench my butt chakra because the moon seems to be aligned favorably with the earth today. I just want to spend an hour stretching, strengthening and relaxing. Finally a place that does not give me the impression that I unwillingly joined a cult! The studio is clean and bright. The yoga room is heated to 38C with infrared panels, has big mirrors and does not have the sweaty smell that is present in some Bikram studios. The teachers are always so welcoming and friendly and try to remember everyone by their name. During the class you are guided through 33 postures. No nonsense - you bend down and they tell you what to do and how. The same postures are repeated each class. Personally, I like that a lot as there is always something that can be worked on and it feels awesome when you finally nail a difficult posture. As a bonus they offer a shot of freshly pressed vegetable juice after each class: exactly what I need after leaving all the water and electrolytes previously contained in my body on the floor in the yoga room! 400 DKK/month unlimited yoga for students (450 DKK/month for real grown ups) is a steal compared to other hot yoga/Bikram studios around town. One problem is that they only have 1-2 classes/day Monday-Thursday and 1 class/day Friday-Sunday. Hopefully that will change as they gain more members. I'm digging it!

This place is kind of newly established, it is close to my friends apartment, so we thought to try it out so we signed up for our first free class. Before showing up we received an email from the studio with short questions about where we have heard about the place etc. That was a detail I liked because when we showed up the instructor had an idea who we were. The staff is very kind, nice and very welcoming. You can rent a mat and towel for the sweaty workout for almost no money, but if you have your own mat it's a good idea to bring it. There are no lockers in the dressing room, but they have small lockers in the entry where you can lock off your private stuff. Other than that they are very precautious regarding safety, so during yoga class the place is locked. They have showers in the dressing room which is very nice considering the fact that you are completely wet. What I like about this place is that you do not sign up for a class and reserve a spot, you just show up. We did yoga, it was hot and you sweat in places you never thought was possible. After performing yoga the instructor handed out little shots of healthy-kale-juice to the yogis for refreshment, which was really needed and nice. The place is so down to earth and not uptight in any way. You feel very welcome and very relaxed before, during and after class. I am going to be a member of the studio today and I am looking forward performing a lot of hot yoga in the future there :) What you need to know about hot yoga is that it is HOT (of course) and very sweaty. You should be prepared for the heat and humidity in the studio and a good thing is to hydrate a lot before performing it.

When entering, it is fairly clear that one should remove their shoes. There are plenty of places to put them. The woman at the front desk was wonderful and helped me get settled and sign the waivers. Once I was squared away, I went into the locker room to put my things down. The studio provides a space with open showers and body soap that smells wonderful. In the past I have not done much yoga nor has it been something that I've really enjoyed when I have done it. However, as a dancer, I thought this would give me a great opportunity to try something new and stretch out. Before entering the studio, the instructor, Markus, has a quick conversation with me and my friend. Since we were both doing bikram for our first time, he gave has a heads up on what to expect and what we should do should we feel unwell in any way. We entered the studio a few minutes before class to get settled in. Immediately, when I entered the studio, I was taken aback by the horrendous smell. Still, excited, I found a place in the second row alongside my friend. (It was a small class tonight--just 6 of us plus the instructor). Markus had a good balance between being demanding, giving corrections, and keeping the class on track. I do think, however, that he could do a better job making his yoga class calming while maintaining the rigor. His quick and repetitive way of speaking--although effective for teaching--was not at all relaxing. I would consider returning and trying bikram again sometime in the semi-near future.

There is a sauna available to yogis as well (though I dont know who in their right mind would leave a 90 minute extrenuous class in a 105 degree room to seek refuge in another equally hot room).... highly reccomended studio!

Seriously, this place used to be a church, and it's got the coolest vibe! They also have a small boutique with some props, mats and occasionally, cool t-shirts. All with the level of instruction you can expect from a very experienced team of Iyengar teachers. If you have never been to an Iyengar Yoga class, you can expect a very precise practice with emphasis on correct alignment. Also, Iyengar instructors go through the lengthiest and most rigorous process to get certified, and that alone is a guarantee of their level of professionalism and involvement. If you are new to yoga, you owe it to yoursel to try this place. Their beginner's classes are some of the most accessible I've come across (specially Claus's, who is truly a talented teacher). All classes are either bilingual or held 100% in English, which is very appreciated by this girl who doesn't yet speak enough Danish. P.S. This place was the best gym out of the ~12 I've been to (in the states) over the last few years. The equipment was all very high quality, with multiple stations of the typical stuff -- benches, deadlift platforms, squat racks, etc. There were also a wide variety of machines, many of which I've rarely, if at all, seen before. Again, all were great and modern quality. There's a long turf area, with everything you could imagine as far as cross-training gear near said turf. Essentially just a huge variety and amount of very modern equipment. In my experience, gyms either have quality OR variety. This place has both. The employee at the front desk (who I later learned was one of the owners) was very friendly, and especially welcoming when I mentioned that I was new in town. As he made me a banana + protein shake after my workout (which is also an amazing perk -- delicious with a bunch of options), he gave me helpful suggestions for things to do in town. I will definitely be going back!

It is THE PERFECT GYM! That means a lot to me, as someone who has visited many gyms around the world, always trying to find the perfect one. Vesterbronx is friendly to powerlifters, weightlifters, CrossFitters, Strongman, bodybuilders, and multi-sport athletes alike. It is located in a very trendy area in Copenhagen called Vesterbro. There are a lot of restaurants around. The closest metro station, Forum, is about a 20 minute walk away, but there are buses which pick up much closer to the gym. The gym is on the 2nd floor which you can climb up to using the staircase or use the elevator. When you enter, you will be greeted by someone who is manning the coffee / espresso / protein shake café. Do note that this gym is cash only. So if you want to purchase a t-shirt, walk-in for a day pass, or purchase a food or café item, you will need to have some Danish Krone on you. The gym itself is clean and filled with everything a serious athlete could possibly need. The gym is equipped with many speciality bars (an SSB squat bar, football bar, log press, Eleiko weightlifting bars, a trap bar, and fat bars) and at least 5 power racks, 2 combination racks, and several competition benches with spotting platforms. There are many power bars including Ohio Power Bars and Eleiko Power Bars. Here is some more equipment this awesome gym has: chains, bands of all tensions, TRX, row machines, GHR, cable machines, full dumbbell stack, rings, ropes, reverse hyper, hyperextension, sissy squat, kettlebells, a turf, prowler sleds, plenty of machines, and a POMMEL HORSE (I thought that was so cool)! So you can come here to get a coffee, lounge, eat, relax, and train. They even have an "Arnold Lounge" which is a bodybuilding room that feels like an Arnold Schwarzenegger man cave. What a great environment. And not only that, there were a lot of strong people in there. I love training in an environment where others are pushing themselves really hard. It makes you push yourself harder. Finally, the staff were nothing short of wonderful. I got to meet René who actually let my brother borrow his shorts (he wasn't planning to train). How awesome! If I lived in Copenhagen, this would absolutely be my home gym.
