Dynamics provides two different group classes. An introduction/ beginner class that is 45 minutes long and a regular class for an hour. They have a ton of different classes throughout the day to accommodate people working. The classes usually begin with a warm up and stretching and then they lead into a few different circuit workouts. Every time a go there is always a new work out or a it has been modified so you are not working out the same part of your body. You will do a lot of things using your own body weight which is a lot harder than it seems. The instructors are very nice and will motivate you and not in a condescending way. $7.50 for one class or 6 dollars a class (60 dollars) if you purchase the 10 class pass which is a steal, cash or check only, no cards taken. Bring a water bottle and change of shoes if you can. The first time walking threw the door is the hardest part. Embrace it! They want you to succeed there and so do you.

Every class is different and you won't be bored. The Scarborough location is a little bigger than the Portland location, and from my experience tends to be less crowded. I am a regular at the 6am Tuesday/Thursday class with trainer Jaime, who is kind, motivating, organized and really just all around great! Their website has their schedule with all of the boot camp classes. They rarely cancel unless there are extreme weather conditions. I have noticed that a lot of other gyms/trainers cancel boot camps last-minute so I really appreciate this about Dynamics. They have regular boot camps which last an hour, and basic boot camps which are 45 minutes. Boot camp goes like this: A 10 minute warm up with drills like butt-kicks, lateral squats, skips, and ending with bear-crawls. Dynamic stretch is next followed by resistance band-work to strengthen your butt and hips. Then comes the circuits which work out your whole body and keep your heart-rate elevated. Sometimes there is back and forth partner work, and sometimes stations with TRX, KetlleBells, Medicine Balls, Body Weight, Fitness Bands, etc... Examples include TRX Rows, Push ups, Tricep presses, medicine ball shuffles, kettle bell swings, sprinter sit ups, squat jumps, dead lifts... etc.. You can always modify any exercise. There is usually a finisher which includes something awful like Burpees :) After a quick stretch, you are out the door having accomplished an awesome work out! There is water for sale for $1 but I always bring a full water bottle and towel. You can go at your own pace and everyone in the class is kind and encouraging. For first timers, try the basic boot camp and work your way up. You won't be disappointed!

I submitted an inquiry about learning more about Beacon and heard back within the same day and was able to meet the owner and get an assessment scheduled quickly. After the assessment, I jumped right into classes and loved it. Well out-fitted, a great community of friendly and motivating members, and awesome coaches -- Beacon has it all! I think what I appreciated the most about Beacon is the team's attitude towards fitness; fitness can enrich your life and make living your life easier and better. After doing CrossFit for years at a previous box, I was so used to a culture of just wanting to throw around as much weight as possible with no regard to form and listening to my body. At Beacon, I felt supported to really focus on how to properly move my body, how to best challenge my body, and really how to have fun with CrossFit again. Absolutely one of the best gyms/fitness centers I've ever visited. I'm currently enrolled in small…read moregroup training and we are working on deadlifts, back squats, pull ups and ring rows, as well as classic CrossFit cardio-based moves (rowing, assault bike, running, etc.). My coach/trainer, Seth, is amazingly helpful and patient in teaching me how to do handstands against the wall (and eventually without the wall). He has a very supportive, encouraging, easy-going personality that really motivates me to do my best. He routinely asks me what moves I want to work on, and we have already covered rope climbs and handstand preps, to name a few. I really enjoy the small group vibe as it gives us a chance to get to know each other better, and we have more time with our coach than we would in a regular CrossFit class. Seth has helped me get to the point where I feel like I can just jump into a regular CrossFit class whenever I want. I'm already almost up to a PR in deadlifts and it has only been a few months (and I took over a year off). It is a bit pricey (I'm paying $240 for 8 classes a month), but I still think it is worth it. You really are getting a lot of time with the coach, even in the small group setting. Highly recommended.

There's an outdoor deck/patio that you can sit and relax on too if you want to take a break from your workout. Although the bouldering section is relatively smaller (compared to the Portsmouth location which is entirely bouldering), there is a good variety of problems and wall angles, plus an additional smaller wall on the upper level. Price wise, I'd say it's a little steep especially if you only want to boulder (or only ropes- I wish gyms offered discounts for one type of climbing but I understand that would be difficult to track/enforce). And amenities are a little older/dated, but they do have showers, foot rinse stations etc. And a nice retail/merch section of front. For first time visitors - I know every gym has its standards/procedures, but the entire mandatory walkthrough and explanation of all classes/events offered is a bit overkill in my opinion. I think that is something that should be announced/posted on flyers and elaborated on in person on a case-by-case basis. All in all though, I do enjoy this facility and try to make it out at least once during my annual beach vacation in Maine. @azfitfoodfun

I joined mainly for the hot tub, which has been closed with no solution for much of that time. While here, I was recruited by multiple staff to work here. When I applied, simply to help with pool closures and not because I needed a job, I never heard back. I didn't really use my membership over the summer, and returned to find a hot tub that was still closed and a basketball court that is half closed, with a very slow timeline for repair. Also, the basketball court area has no air flow and is dangerous for use. Have had issues with staff and their lack of communication the whole time. When I raised my concerns and cited my reasons for canceling my membership, their coo sent an email before having his first cup of coffee in the morning, or so it seemed, showing zero effort to resolve issues. I wish them the best and hope they find experienced and skilled staff that can lead them in the right direction. I won't be back and don't recommend it, but you can check it out. Value wise, it is significantly more expensive than other options in the area, especially with so many of their amenities out of commission. It is probably also worth mentioning that I sponsored their March Madness Pizza Party and Mini Golf/Ice Cream field trip.

On their balance beams, trampolines, bars, ball pit and on and on, the kids have a blast and the staff keeps the energy and bouncy music high. Off to one side is a separate personal training area for adults tho there are some classes that are integrated for both children and parents. We have attended for the open gym days, a 5-week session of gymnastics and birthday parties (one we hosted). As someone who could never make it to the top of the rope at a traditional gymnastic venue as a kid, I adore this introduction to tumbling for my toddlers. Safe, fun, clean, reasonable and the friendliest staff around. I look forward to checking out one of the parent/child classes soon!

One of the owners Todd is there frequently and very nice. They're not too pricy, for pilates at least. There's also childcare available during some classes! It's not disruptive at all either. You can't leave class without being a little shaky, and you can definitely feel if you are reaping the benefits of the classes. I've only been a member for a month now, and Im excited to continue on!
