Have you tried climbing? Would you like that feeling of soreness and satisfaction? How about when your brain tells you to do something, but your body won't let it? That was how I felt after my climbing session last night. I was PUMPED, like jello arms pumped. It was glorious! I loved, loved, loved this gym. It was just what the climber in me, who hasn't climbed regularly in over a year, needed to become reinvigorated in the sport. It's a mindset, to want to climb, to feel the urge to be strong and confident. To understand your body mechanics, to remember to breathe. All of these things are addictive and climbing, as a sport, gets in your blood. It makes you want... NO... need, to climb. At this point, I would say I am a veteran climber. I have been in the game for almost a decade, have taught kids and adults how to belay, worked in a rock gym for over 5 years, and gone on the quintessential western climbing/camping trip. I would call myself a climber. Am I the best? Nope. Do I trad climb? No, but I'll clean your route. Do I love projecting routes? You bet! When I walked into Salt Pump, I was immediately greeted by the employees who asked a few questions to gauge our climbing experience. They were non-judgemental and really gave us the time to check in, then gave us a quick tour. The facility is beautiful! It's open, but no so open it feels overwhelming. It's got a really great vibe, which immediately made me feel at ease. The route setting was solid. Lots of variety, literally something for everyone. They have bouldering, top roping, auto belays, a lead wall, and a few nice cracks throughout the gym. This is a real climber's gym. I can tell that that is their audience and that that is who should frequent this locale. It doesn't feel commercial, industrial, or corporate. And, to top it off, they have a pond off their back deck where you can fish and you access to a grill to cook food after your climbing session. I am completely sold and you should be too. Of the two gyms in the area, this one will happily give my money to:

Another great climbing gym in the area! The people are great and the routes are fantastic. Which is better.... I bet there is ALWAYS going to be that question... The answer is simple. Go to whichever feels right and is in the location you want! I love the routes at SP and especially the staff. Having trouble with a route? There's always another climber or a staff member willing to help you learn and become a better climber. The location is a bit secluded but that offers a little pond to play on, a bigger floor space and big windows with great views! A rock-star kinda place (*groan*)

This is an awesome rock gym! There are tons of bouldering problems, top rope routes, and lead climbs for all ability levels. I came once with a friend and was hooked. Now we all have memberships and couldn't be happier! The staff is super nice and helpful. Memberships are a little pricey but definitely worth it. They come with a lot of cool discounts and benefits.

Dynamics provides two different group classes. An introduction/ beginner class that is 45 minutes long and a regular class for an hour. They have a ton of different classes throughout the day to accommodate people working. The classes usually begin with a warm up and stretching and then they lead into a few different circuit workouts. Every time a go there is always a new work out or a it has been modified so you are not working out the same part of your body. You will do a lot of things using your own body weight which is a lot harder than it seems. The instructors are very nice and will motivate you and not in a condescending way. $7.50 for one class or 6 dollars a class (60 dollars) if you purchase the 10 class pass which is a steal, cash or check only, no cards taken. Bring a water bottle and change of shoes if you can. The first time walking threw the door is the hardest part. Embrace it! They want you to succeed there and so do you.

Every class is different and you won't be bored. The Scarborough location is a little bigger than the Portland location, and from my experience tends to be less crowded. I am a regular at the 6am Tuesday/Thursday class with trainer Jaime, who is kind, motivating, organized and really just all around great! Their website has their schedule with all of the boot camp classes. They rarely cancel unless there are extreme weather conditions. I have noticed that a lot of other gyms/trainers cancel boot camps last-minute so I really appreciate this about Dynamics. They have regular boot camps which last an hour, and basic boot camps which are 45 minutes. Boot camp goes like this: A 10 minute warm up with drills like butt-kicks, lateral squats, skips, and ending with bear-crawls. Dynamic stretch is next followed by resistance band-work to strengthen your butt and hips. Then comes the circuits which work out your whole body and keep your heart-rate elevated. Sometimes there is back and forth partner work, and sometimes stations with TRX, KetlleBells, Medicine Balls, Body Weight, Fitness Bands, etc... Examples include TRX Rows, Push ups, Tricep presses, medicine ball shuffles, kettle bell swings, sprinter sit ups, squat jumps, dead lifts... etc.. You can always modify any exercise. There is usually a finisher which includes something awful like Burpees :) After a quick stretch, you are out the door having accomplished an awesome work out! There is water for sale for $1 but I always bring a full water bottle and towel. You can go at your own pace and everyone in the class is kind and encouraging. For first timers, try the basic boot camp and work your way up. You won't be disappointed!

In fact, I forgot the last time I saw a gym, especially in a major city, for that little per month. After my "gym tour" with the one of their very kind staff members, I knew I had found my new local spot for workouts. The gym itself is quite big. It has two levels, with most cardio machines being on the first floor and the weights/dumbbells on the second level. I've been going for a few months now, and these are some of my favorite things: - Always clean - Lots of locker space - All machines have been working flawlessly - They follow Covid-19 protocols, so certain machines are blocked off - 24 hour access (!!!!) - Lots of machines, so I never have to wait around to use a tread, for example - Doesn't get too crowded even during peak hours For $15, I get a LOT more than what I expected. I can cancel at anytime and I didn't even have to pay a fee upfront. They do charge you a $39 one-time fee during the first 30 days of signing up, which apparently locks in your membership price in case of any increases in the future. You can also upgrade your membership to their "premium" version which includes tanning, access to the Theragun and a few other perks.
