Now the bad--The fitness instructors need some improvement . I've had 3 interactions with them and ehhh much to be desired. The BB&T class instructor was very timid, hardly spoke except to say the move. Spin class was the least motivating class I've ever been to. The instructor (different from the first) said she was the director so I had high hopes. She started about 10 minutes late, looked at her phone almost the entire time (I think either watching the time or trying to find songs??) and again not motivating at all. Both of them would be better at being yoga instructors because that's the type of voice they used-- just calm, soft and not "high intensity." Now my last issue was yesterday when I was kicked off the treadmills. There are 2 rows of treadmills so probably 20 or so all together. There were 3 people on the treadmills who were all on one side and using the first 4 treadmills. I got on the very last treadmill in the first row. The HIIT instructor (who I figured out after) had a class going which I didn't realize and she asked me to stay off for the next 20 minutes. I thought she had people working in some intervals or something so I started on weights instead as I was watching, I noticed that no she only had those three people taking her class and did end up letting someone of her own ethnicity get on where I had been. So she shut down all the treads for her 3 people. Dumb.

I had tried before and it was a whole thing, so I was going to let it go to collections. A few days before I receive a text saying if I paid 36.99 they would waive all fees and allow me to cancel my membership. Ok cool, I paid it online. Over text, they asked if I wanted to keep my membership or cancel it. I said cancel and they replied with I had been successfully unsubscribed. I thought it was over. NOT. I got on today after seeing someone complaining about them online just to check behind them to see if they did what they said they would. Nope, they did not. In fact, they charged me another 36.99 on May 1st and have it scheduled to come out again on June 1st. I call. Conveniently, no manager available as per usual. I call corporate. It's an unmonitored phone line. So then I started digging online to see if I can figure out how to get the cancellation to go through. I figured it out....but they won't let me cancel without paying another 36.99 for June!!!!!! At this point, I just canceled my card and disputed the charge with my bank. I'm sure they'll be threatening me with collections again soon, but I have enough written proof to get it dropped. For anyone reading, just avoid the entire headache all together. If you sign up it's a vicious cycle you will never get out of.

Milas and the owner (I sadly didn't get her name!) were both so welcoming and friendly. We had great pre and post workout conversation, and Milas absolutely rocked it on the mic! What a great coaching voice. I even got to talk with some members over some friendly competition. I love going to OTFs when i travel and this one made me feel right at home. Huge floor space too which is a PLUS! Highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area!

If it is your first time taking a class, they require you to arrive early and become acquainted with the facility. You will be assigned an arm-based heart rate monitor. A calculation will determine your different heart rate zones. If you are a regular, the system can be recalibrated to you specifically since some people will naturally have higher/ lower heart rates. As it gets closer to class time, participants begin to arrive and congregate in the lobby. The instructor will explain the heart rate zones to you. Essentially, the more time you spend in the "orange" zone, the higher your EPOC or "afterburn," as they'll explain it, will be. Everyone does a progressive warm up on the row of treadmills, or rowers (I think. I was on a treadmill, so I am not sure what the people behind me were doing). I LOVE the Freemotion i109b reflex treadmills. These are great for this type of class format because they are easy to just jump on and immediately get going with individual buttons for the speed, and inclines. This way you avoid pressing the up button a bunch of times to get to your desired speed and the same goes for incline. I was able to run the fastest I have ever run on a treadmill because of the ease of reducing speed after the sprint. If you hit a max speed on a traditional treadmill, it is a safety hazard to press the down button and wait for the treadmill to get back to a lower speed. Overall, quality of equipment is on point. The class format on this day was a circuit in which the first time through there were 4 rounds, 3 rounds, 2 rounds, 1 round. The actual workout was 50 minutes. There was a 5-minute warm up and 5-minute cool down/ stretching. The "weight room" consists of TRX, bosu balls, mats, and some light dumbbells. It was during this portion of the circuit that I took some issue. Though the exercise was demonstrated up on the TV screen, I was slightly unclear at times how many reps I was supposed to be doing. Being an exercise professional myself, I am proficient with exercise form. My fellow classmates were struggling with form. Though they were told what exercise to do, there was very little instruction on form, and during the workout, the instructor did more motivating than form correction. This could lead to injuries down the road and just an overall less effective exercise. The class was mainly a cardio class despite the bit of strengthening that was incorporated. If you are a number driven person, this class will motivate you because you can see how much time you spent in the various heart rate zones. That said, if you're self-motivated, you could achieve the very same thing by purchasing your own personal heart rate monitor and working out to stay in the specific heart rate zones on your own.

My favorite part has been that there have been times where I couldn't be in studio due to my schedule, but still needed to tone up and shred some fat; she was able to successfully create macro plans for me that helped me do just that. I've never worked out with her or had a plan that I worked hard at, that didn't produce results.. and she was there cheering me on the whole way!

I visited a few "big box" gyms in Asheville and Black Mountain, then Ascending Fitness. I was immediately drawn to the small group cross training classes there (think physically safe, not like some other cross training places where injuries abound), but I doubted I could get as good a workout in a group vs. individually. Boy, was I wrong! After attending the group classes over a period of time, I realized I'd NEVER been stronger and in better shape (I'm a 62 yr. old woman, BTW), and the social aspect of a small group was fun and kept me motivated. I've been working out there 3 times a week ever since. The workouts are full body, including strength, balance, and aerobic. It's amazing how much Jim can work into 45 minutes. He also has a great library of online videos that use body weight and all kinds of household and hotel items to workout - very handy while we were all housebound due to Covid. If you're just starting out with a program, Jim also offers classes in balance and stability and "bridge" classes to transition from balance and stability to the full circuit training class. I can't say enough about the positive effects working out at Ascending Fitness brought/brings to me. All the creaky, sore joints and back are pain free now. 100% recommend this place!
