Camp Kirkwood is no camp for a child or a teenager. It is based around the comfort of the counselors and not the children. When I attended camp there was a lice outbreak, and as the counselors checked us for lice, they did not change their utensil or gloves to prevent reinfestation. The food is foul to put it nicely... Well the camper food. Our food came in bulk, from a crate. One day the counselors had to stare at the food for minutes before being able to discern what we were consuming that day. The prepackaged food was not tasteful in anyway, shape or form. While we were eating this distasteful food, the counselors got fresh home cooked meals and desserts they consumed in front of us. While I attended this camp, I saw the way the LIT's or Leaders in Training were treated. Though they did ever job the counselors did and were expected too, they were treated with disrespect, forced to eat the gross pre packed food, meanwhile doing the counselors jobs. The LIT's are 14 and 15 year olds that take over the responsibility of 5-12 year olds throughout the duration of the 8 hour day. At one point, a young child accidentally pooped her pants in the pool, while the counselors went on with their day a fellow LIT was sent to clean this poor girl up. I was an LIT and throughout this camp, I made a friend who happened to be a junior counselor, whom was a 16 year old boy. When the camp director found out we had become friends, he told the junior counselor he could not have any affiliation with me, but we were just friends. Meanwhile, two counselors are in a relationship and nothing is said. In the dining hall, I've seen multiple birds, flying around while we eat, to me this is extremely unsanitary, but then again the floor is also covered in trash, old food crumbs and the ceiling covered in dust and cobwebs. The first day I attended camp Kirkwood a used condom was found in one of the cabins and yet again an LIT had to remove it. This was my experience at camp Kirkwood. read more
