Don't go in expecting the Whole Foods expected up Broad Street later this year. Do expect to find your basic groceries at a fair price, plus some interesting surprises here and there as this store also tries to serve a very diverse neighborhood. Looking for "African American Chicken Treats"? Check the freezer, near the sausage. Halvah? Yep. Sauzón Goya? No prob. Frozen veg section better than many much larger grocery stores' because they prioritize veggies over the higher-margin veg-with-sauce that's come to replace veggies at the A&P. They even have a baby deli in there. And they deliver?!? Good place to know if you're working nearby, or especially if you live nearby.

My wife and I stopped in for a quick bite and ordered two 6" subs -- the Italian sub and the Vodka…read moreChicken Parmesan subwich. We split both to try them, and honestly, they were way better than expected. The Italian had that classic combo of cold cuts, shredded lettuce, tomato, and just the right amount of oil and vinegar -- no onion, and nothing was soggy or falling apart. Everything was tucked in perfectly and easy to eat. The Vodka Chicken Parmesan sub was the real surprise. The chicken was tender, the breading wasn't soggy, and the vodka sauce had great flavor without overpowering the sandwich. The melted cheese pulled it all together. Definitely not your average gas station sub -- this one had care. The same lady made both sandwiches -- and she did it fast and with precision. Usually these can be hit or miss (either overloaded or falling apart), but she nailed the balance and did it quickly without cutting corners. The bathroom and some areas were a bit messy, but we saw another employee actively cleaning. For just two staff members running the whole place, they were doing a solid job. This QuickChek is a reliable stop for sandwiches, gas, snacks, and essentials. We'll definitely be back -- and next time, probably for another Vodka Parm.

A dear friend wanted to get me something special for my birthday. She said the small package would…read morearrive Wednesday or Thursday. Wednesday, I checked. There was nothing at my front door. When I got up early Thursday, there was a Sprouts bag with two high end chocolate bars, some special looking pure peanut butter plus three containers of TreeLine cashew cheese and a tray of spicy tuna sushi. The last items require refrigeration. But there wasn't any. No chemical ice packages. The bag was sitting in the sun. It was 74 degrees. There had been no notice that the bag arrived. How long had the food been out in the sun? I wasn't certain. Since the sushi and the cheese might have gone bad, I wasn't going to eat them. Instead, I called the nearest Sprouts store in Avenel, New Jersey. Melisha Webber, the head cashier, answered. From her first words, she was understanding. It was clear she wanted to help. Even though Instacart had made the errors - no refrigeration and lack of notice - she wanted to make it right. "Tell me what you had,": she said. "Please come here and we'll give you fresh items." She didn't know me. She didn't ask for proof. She just wanted to do the right thing. During a break in my schedule, I drove to Sprouts. When I asked for Melisha, two clerks already knew my name. "You must be Ron," one said with a smile. "We have some items for you in the refrigerator." Melisha took the items from me and immediately threw them away. She wasn't taking any chances. "Let me get you the fresh items," she said. "I hope you don't mind. I gave you two orders of sushi." This is what true customer service is. A person who doesn't look for blame. She just works on a solution. It was an honor to meet her.

That was my first day in New Jersey and I was happy to browse through things at this supermarket. Everything you need is here. The produce is very fresh. We bought some clams, snails, octopus, salmon to make a hot pot, and when we wanted to have a few more snails, they opened the bag and put some more in without weighing it again. The staff was so friendly and nice. They helped me find everything I was looking for. The watercress and vegetables were fresh. I bought some sweet potatoes and casavas which were both so delicious when I steamed them. They displayed everything so neatly here. The only suggestion I have is to please raise the temperature in the supermarket a few degrees. It was freezing cold. Other than that, all good. Thanks to this supermarket, my friend and I had a delicious steaming boat as our first dinner at this Airbnb in Elizabeth city.
