This was a wee night out to the lovely city of Stirling on an UYE visit to this fabulous restaurant…read morechosen and kindly organised by fellow Yelper Nicola C. She did a cracking job and it was a great introduction for a meal out in Stirling. I'm not a biggest fan of Mediterranean food but I do enjoy certain aspects to it and I'm always up for trying different flavours and foods. There was seven of us in total and I was unsure what to go for so an excellent mutual decision was made to go for the Chef's Selection for £14.95 each, which allowed you to try lots of options from their menu. This was a brilliant idea so if there was something I wasn't too keen on there was someone else happy to munch in, so nothing went to waste. There was so many courses, I forgot how many there was that it felt like a never ending amount of food came to our table. It was awesome! My favourite was the wee cheeky side order I had of halloumi but make sure you get the lutza halloumi as it comes with pork medallions. Yum! The chorizo was the best I've ever tasted, I'm not the greatest fan but the way it was cooked made it really tasty. We had falafel, chicken wings, lamb kofte, olives, hummus, lots of pita bread, Greek gyros and baba ghanoush. By the last course though I had to force myself, I think I may have had too many helpings of pita and hummus. Ooops! But is tasted so goooood. It's an alternative meal out with good quality food and the staff are lovely. We did have a few waits in between courses but then it's a popular restaurant but with good company and banter it didn't seem so bad. Thanks again to Nicola C. and look forward to the next Stirling UYE. Nudge nudge, wink wink! Hehe!

On top of this, the Merienda team have put a few extra precautions in place, all without impacting the dining experience! When we arrived at the restaurant we were encouraged to sanitize our hands, we had our temperature checked and we were asked to keep our face masks on whilst moving through the restaurant. Whether you're looking for a light meal or a full dining experience, the menu is served Mediterranean style with small plates based around 5 different sections; Merienda Staples, Fields and Gardens, Farms and Pastures, Rivers and Seas, and Sweetness. We decided to go for the full dining experience and ordered 6 plates each, plus a dessert to share. After grazing on so many delicious plates, it was difficult to choose a favourite, but if we had to pick 1, it would have to be the star of the show - the dessert - White chocolate & cranberry croissant butter pudding. Everything about the menu was incredibly fresh and it was interesting to know that all the ingredients are sourced locally throughout Scotland, served in their own style! The servers were extremely attentive and (personally for us) we enjoyed the pace in which all the dishes were served, as this allowed us to not rush our meal and appreciate the flavours the chef had put together for us. We walked-in for dinner just after opening around 5:30. Three tables were already taken and reservations are encouraged but we were accommodated with the condition of leaving by a certain time. We had hummus, lentil soup and chicken shish! The hummus had the perfect texture with a garlicky, tangy finish. The soup and chicken were good with very slight Turkish seasoning and fresh. We were presented the red "hot" sauce that was equivalent to a mild blended picco de gallo. (Minus the cilantro and onion) Overall an average meal at a very reasonable price.

Now, I absolutely love borek, after having it for breakfast in Albania- so I had some of that- it was lovely. Also baklava is one of my favourite things, so that happened too- also great. Top marks for the hummus too. I kind of wished we'd got loads of small plates and picked and shared, but my companion here isn't a sharer (I know, why are we still friends? I don't know either), so I had moussaka- which always risks being sloppy, but it wasn't at all. Lovely staff to boot too.

We loved this restaurant and enjoyed all our dishes. The good thing about small plates, at modest prices, is if a member of your party doesn't care for a dish it's no big deal. The salads, the kebabs, the dips, the seafood... everything was first rate as was the service. Only dish that faltered (and we had 10 among four of us) was the moussaka. Terrific meal! They need to pay more attention to their Yelp listing - there's a full bar, excellent cocktails, and they take credit cards - despite the Yelp listing.

As I get further into my twenties, I've found that restaurants have an increasing tendency to play their music very loud. I'm sorry, and call me old fashioned, but one of the main things about going out for dinner is that you are there to have a conversation with the person you are with. I'm not there to get my groove on. Anyway, I digress. I really enjoy Greek/Turkish and Middle Eastern Food which is what this place specialises in. We chose some mezze plates including the chicken souvlaki, soutzoukakia (meatballs), the Moroccan Chicken Tagine and the Loukaniko. It was mouth watering. It was great value too, the portion sizes were manageable and we left very happy customers.
