I've been to paint nights before and loved them. But unfortunately, I didn't love this one. This is my first time doing a paint night with YayMaker and I was super excited because the painting we had for Oct 4th looked beautiful. It was the "Rainbow Palm Tree". The paint night in particular was at the Hilton in Mission Valley. I'm not a fan of paying for parking especially when I'm already paying for other stuff on top of that unless it's a special occasion. This wasn't a special occasion for me, it was just an outing. So I parked in the street. Had I known that the people who parked in the self-parking had their parking covered, I would've parked there instead of in the street. Literally the instructor announced the parking situation at the end. I didn't see anything when signing up about it, but also I had the ticket sent to someone else's email because we were going together, so who knows, maybe they missed that email. But anyways we go inside and the lighting is soooo poor. I was confused as to how we were going to even see our colors blending, which we didn't. This resulted in me holding my phone for the whole two hours with the flashlight on in order to see my color scheme that was going on. It was honestly to the extent where you couldn't really even see what was going on in the front because of the poor lighting overall. Another reason I didn't like the experience was that there was toooo many people. I'm pretty sure it was around 50 people who attended, maybe even a bit more. With this many people you aren't able to get one-on-one time with the instructor which you are in other paint nights with diff companies that I've been to. With that many people there, it was also super squishy on the tables. I felt like I was a little tooooo close to my neighbors. This many people also led to not being able to see the canvas at the front well enough, since more people = more distance. You couldn't hear the instructor half the time with her microphone. And the paint night was literally in the lobby so it makes sense why you can't hear her. I'm not an artist, but the other paint nights I went to with other companies made me feel like one because of the pace that they go at and the one-on-one instruction between each step. The one thing I like about YayMaker is the raffle that they did. You pay $2 to enter a raffle to win a painting, and all proceeds go to an animal shelter in Oceanside. I came here to relax and destress but honestly walked out stressed and disappointed with how the whole paint night was set up. read more

This is for the paint night on Fri, Dec. 20, 2019 @ Mission Valley Hilton where we painted a Christmas tree dress. (This should be enough info for Yaymaker to identify the instructor to give her credit). I cannot remember the instructor's name right now but she was really good. Of the 5 paint nights I have done (both from Yaymaker and another company), she was the only one to tell us to always leave the paint brushes in water when not in use). She gave us detailed step by step instructions and gave us some technique on strokes for the tree. She gave us the option of just doing a tree instead of a tree dress. She often said to raise our hands if we needed help or had questions. She was approachable and encouraging. She had cheerful holiday music and regular music playing in the background. The venue was great--large tables set up on two sides with the instructor and 2 paintings in the middle--one finished and one being painted. We had good elbow room too. (We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant before hand so that was convenient). Parking was easy, plentiful, free, and just a few steps away. I will be coming back to this venue and to another Yaymaker event. I have done a total of 3 paint nights with Yaymaker. read more

This was my very first painting class and I had a lot of fun. I forgot the instructors name but she was nice and did a good job. You can sign up on the website and pick what day and painting you like. The locations are different. The canvas, paint brushes and apron is provided for you. I booked a class to make a bonsai tree and it was really fun! The area was a little weird - it was at Protecter Brewery which because I don't drink I thought was okay. Also it was kind of a dark spot with not great lighting which just seems the case for breweries! My friends have asked me several times to paint with them, I've declined every time up until now. I'm more of a pencil and eraser kinda girl. Paint is jut so permanent. Shalini found a painting labeled "easy" the I liked, so I signed up. I was very apprehensive to say the least lol! Mike was an awesome instructor. The painting is broken down in stages and he walked us through every single one. As we painted, he walked around giving us pointers and help as we needed it. I am not an artist; can't even draw a stick figure, but when I saw the Living Social deal I thought it would be fun to do with my BF. This was completely out of my comfort zone, but I went anyway. The event we picked was at 1:00 at Broken Yolk in Oceanside and the painting was deemed "easy." We arrived early to check in. We got aprons and found two seats next to each other. They handed out drink menus with drink specials. Our easels, canvases, water cups, paint brushes, and paint were already set up for us. Mike was our instructor and he gave us our intro, explained how the afternoon would go, turned on some music and away we went. He was great about explaining the brushes, the paint, the strokes, etc. As we were painting, Broken Yolk had servers coming by to take our drink orders. We were able to put both our drinks on the same tab and pay by credit card. Thank god for drinks....it definitely helped my anxiety of trying to paint a masterpiece. HA! About halfway through we got a 10 minute break which was mostly to allow the canvas to dry. Mike also did a raffle for a few of the previous paintings that had been done. I think the money was going to a charity, but I honestly wasn't paying attention. Several people took creative license with their work and changed it up a bit from what the guided work was (i.e. instead of orange leaves they did pink; One guy actually had aliens coming down from the sky) so you can absolutely make this your own. Since I prefer color by numbers I followed Mike's lead. We went step by step so it wasn't overwhelming at all. If I had to take a blank canvas and create the finished product that was on display it would have never happened. I wouldn't have known where to begin. Only complaint was that some of the medium brushes had been used so much previously that they were "venus fly traps" so they weren't able to do the thinner strokes that we needed. It's not like my work was going in the museum so I wasn't too concerned with it. If you are a perfectionist though, it could be frustrating. After we were done with our canvas, we took pictures, cleaned up and we were on our way. Overall it was about 2 hours. Mike did say our class was quieter than most. My feeling is that it's because it was a Saturday afternoon. I would imagine evening classes are a little more wild since people are probably more apt to drink later in the day. I would anticipate it running longer in the evening too if the instructor has to get people back on track. As we were cleaning up I noticed a tip jar at the front of the room. I would have brought cash to tip if I had known that. So BRING CASH. Fun and different experience. My canvas wasn't terrible and looks fairly decent from a distance. Although the middle of the painting is a red road and my mom said my red bird looks great....soo..... Definitely recommend Paint Nite. It was an interesting experience. You could even do it solo if you were looking for something to do. The venue itself was good. Broken Yolk has a private room. Only criticism is that it was HOT in there, but as soon as I asked them to adjust the AC, it was totally comfortable. read more

This is SUCH a fun activity for a girls night. I still wonder what everybody does with their paintings... no one really hangs these up in their house, do they? but gosh is it fun! I did one in Carlsbad at Fresco with my mom for Mothers Day. I definitely wouldn't give Fresco five stars - they upsold us on a bottle of wine, telling us it was cheaper than happy hour by the glass, and then charged us like double the price on the receipt. When I pointed it out, they reduced the price down to the happy hour rate, but I still don't see how that makes it CHEAPER than happy hour. Basically they just conned us into buying a whole bottle of wine... which now that I think about it... no complaints there. The instructor... her name escapes me... was outstanding and gave just the right amount of nudging in the right direction while letting us do our thing. Our event was during the day - 4pm I think - but I could see this being even more fun if you did one around 7pm and had a livelier crowd. The advantage to doing it at 4pm is that you get happy hour... Anyway, overall a really fun experience that I hope to repeat! read more

Bought a livingsocial deal for me and my bf and it was worth it. Initially, we bought an event that took place at Maloney's downtown. Good thing I checked the website the day of the event cos I saw there it was canceled. I just got lucky I did that. They should have contacted us to say the event was canceled cos I wouldn't have been happy if we drove all the way DT just to know it was canceled. Anyways, we rebooked and it took place at Players Sports Bar. It was actually a lot of fun. I'd suggest getting there early so that you can get the happy hour deals before the class starts. Went to my second Paint Nite event and I LOVED the painting! The venue however was awful :( It was at Q's Sports Bar in Vista and the food was horrible and the setup had some of the students with their backs to the instructor. I attended the location in Vista at 50 barrel winery and we painted Van Gogh's Iris'. This was a very basic class with not too much instruction. I would probably not take a class from this company again, as I am too advanced for that level of instruction (not to toot my own horn or anything). Additionally, the painting they advertised on their website was pretty darn different than the one the instructor wanted to teach us, this was disappointing. I was really looking forward to painting the classic picture with iris in it. Also they only allow for 2 hours, which is not really enough time to complete a good painting. And they don't even give you green or brown or purple, you have to mix all these colors constantly, seems kind of cheap to me. Considering this was a time sensitive gift, we were not able to attend an event any time soon. We attempted to contact Yaymaker for a refund considering it was a last minute cancellation and they were difficult to contact. Eventually they did grant us our refund. About a year ago, I began going to PaintNite with a friend and eventually brought family into the fold. I didn't think I could paint at all, but Stephanie Chambers showed me I can paint with good results and having fun while doing it. With Stephanie's direction, I have completed many paintings with varying degrees of difficulty. I think I'm on 35 paintings give or take. I do most of my paintings with Stephanie because she makes it fun, has a great sense of humor and encourages her students at every step. I have taken classes with other PaintNite artists and haven't been disappointed with them either. I love the PaintNite concept. I love Stephanie Chambers. I think the number of paintings I've completed expresses my enthusiasm for PaintNite events and especially for Stephanie as an instructor. It's not often you find someone like Stephanie. She is someone who lifts her students up and helps them when struggling. More importantly, Stephanie encourages students to express themselves by adding to a painting, or to try different colors, or do something completely different. I attended the Paint Night at Belching Beaver with Lexi as our guide. This was not my first rodeo so I knew ahead of time that alcohol consumption is key. Lexi was so much fun, playful, and funny! She will let you know ahead of time what the painting schedule. She will also provide a confidence boost by reassuring yours will be individually different. I am not a artist by any means and came strictly for the experience. Lexi made it a great one! If at any point you have painters block you can ask her to lend a hand. Some advice would be if you're having trouble seeing your vision you should take a photo of your painting. Looking it from a different perspective is key. My daughter did this for me for Mothers Day. We had a really good time and it was at an amazing placed called Pesto Italian Kitchen. I will be back there again. There were 20 of us with plenty of space to work and teacher was so nice and helpful. I really feel the class should have been 3 not 2 hours as I felt we really didn't finish. People showed up late which meant a late start. My other big complaint was the brushes were terrible and I mean terrible. When I mentioned that to the teacher she agree and said she had been requesting new ones for months. I had a good time and would do this again. read more

Lexi greeted our group who already had our canvas saved and with some fun intros we got just the tip of our paintbrushes wet with the liquid acrylic and started placing those fine bristles on the bumpy emptiness on our canvas. I did the Paint Nite event at 100 Wines in Hillcrest, but it looks like it was the same company as this one so I'll write my review here. A few of my friends and I signed up for the deal through Groupon. We checked out the Paint Nite website and picked an easy painting since none of us have painted since grade school. The website was very easy to navigate and had lots of great info such as: the painting you would be replicating, the level of difficulty of the painting, the location, and the instructor. The day of our event we received a reminder e-mail letting us know to show up early if we want to sit together, not to wear our fanciest clothes, etc. Our instructor Jessica was upbeat, fun and great at explaining and demonstrating things for us. She was there with another girl and they constantly walked around to check on us. All of our paintings turned out better than we expected. All in all a GREAT night read more

I am not new to this kind of painting experience - and usually use a living social. I paid full price for this one - so that is kind of an ouch. Stephanie was the instructor for this particular class held at Fifty Barrels Urban Winery (I reviewed them separately). I noticed instantly that the class set up was two long tables with easels close together. I hoped I would not get a left-handed person next to me and whaddaya know, it happens. She was all over my space. Not her fault. Some thought needs to be given to the left hand/right hand dilemma being that these painting spaces are SO CLOSE to accommodate so many people. The instructor provided adequate instruction (actually she dumbed it down a bit - I would have been interested in learning a bit more for the money I was paying). She played some 80s music along with some other popular tunes. Not bad music choice. She swore during her microphone time, which actually turned me off a bit. Now. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm pretty comfortable in areas where the sun don't shine... and my frequent attendance at drag shows is a testament to my love for all things hilariously crude. The difference is I expect that kind of content at a drag show. I don't really expect it at a painting event - yes, even one where wine is consumed. It isn't that it offended my "virgin" ears (those ears are long gone). It's just that I didn't find it professional - and I "noticed" it - because it didn't fit. Her choice to instruct that way, but I lost some respect. I also did not feel that I could get up and get more paint. That was not announced if it was possible. I felt bad about needing more paint, and tried to make what I had work, but I wasn't happy with my background as a result. The one thing that turned me off the most was the size of the class and the lack of space. Too large of a class. Too little paint space. It got loud - a bit annoying. Sure, maybe if I drank more, it wouldn't have been an issue... but I was driving so I couldn't drink more than a couple glasses. The class also went over on time due to the time it took to dry the canvas. It seemed like such a basic painting, but felt like it took forever. I will probably stick with The Paint Barrel in Temecula. I prefer their format to this class. read more

My BFF flew in from out of state for a weekend of fun in S.D. and I thought painting would be a great way for us to enjoy it. We had a blast! We realized how different our styles were in how the same picture looked different on our canvases. The wine flowed and our paint brushes got busy to create a sunset over the ocean with mountains and cliffs. Turns out we were equally mediocre, and were actually able to create paintings that didn't look too far off from the original we were copying. The event was fun and it was enjoyable to leisurely paint while enjoying drinks. The tables were a bit crammed but we had just enough room for our canvases, supplies, and a drink. The event was well organized and painting started promptly at the scheduled time. While I didn't paint a masterpiece, I was pleasantly surprised that my "art" turned out way better than I would have expected--I hadn't picked up a paintbrush in years! Paint Nite is a fun concept, it was an easy and inexpensive way (thanks Groupon!) to do something crafty with friends for a change. CAUTION! I purchased a 2 class Groupon. I scheduled both of my classes right away. Within the first week, my 1st class got canceled and needed to be re-scheduled for another time. Bummer since I really liked the paining class I had chosen... Found another paining I liked... booked that class....canceled again! That was the first class... The second class I booked was a wood painting class....canceled.... booked another wood painting class... rescheduled me for some random day two weeks later.... BUT ENDED UP BEING CANCELED AGAIN! I contacted Yaymaker and of course there is nothing they can do and I need to contact Groupon. The link Yaymaker sent me for Groupon dosen't even work! So I went to my first paint nite last night and I have mixed feelings. It was fun, I want to do it again, but hopefully the negatives were a one time occurrence. Note: I understand that my review also applies to the venue, however I feel like the coordinator (paint nite) also is responsible for our experience. Onto my review. I understand that the point is it's supposed to be a fun night around art and alcohol and I am certainty not a prude. However, I was surprised at how incredibly intoxicated some of the guests were. Like, beyond drunk. You are in very tight quarters, which makes the drunk and disorderly extremely disruptive to the whole event. We went with 6 women and all lined up on a long table. There were 4 or 5 women directly in front of us that were so drunk. They were loud, disruptive, and incredibly rude. It totally took away from our experience. They kept complaining that the music wasn't loud enough so they put their phone music on and blasted it. When we asked them to turn it off they refused, and were super confrontational. I actually thought there was going to be a physical altercation with these women. They were yelling at people, yelling at the instructor, etc. Halfway through one of them knocked over their paint/water cup and it spilled all over me. I was soaking wet, all over my paints, in my shoes, everywhere. No apology from the drunkers, and I got to spend the last half of my event in wet/paint soaked clothes. The reason I hold Paint Nite accountable is because the instructor saw them being disruptive, even joked to cut them off. But did nothing to actually stop their behavior. He was super nice, and I felt for him...but ultimately it did ruin our night. Someone should have stepped in and got them under control as we were unable to without it escalating. I have to reiterate these women were fall down, pass out drunk. I noticed many women who seemed to really be drinking heavily, and then they were sent on their way to drive and the whole thing made me a little uncomfortable. Maybe a drink limit is appropriate. I had 2 glasses of wine, one for the first half, then I grabbed another during the break for the second half. I think 2 drinks in a two hour period is plenty to be sending people out on the road. We all discussed wanting to try it again, but I think we would choose another night (other than Friday) next time to see if we can get a mellower crowd. It was shocking how rowdy people were at a painting/wine event. read more

I went to a 7pm event. Walked in, friendly woman greeted us and led us right to our seats. Everything was setup and shortly after the instructor laid everything out it was smooth sailing from there. I am by no means an artist, but I was pleased to learn that her instructions were very easy to follow. The instructor was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was great also. She played awesome music and kept everyone in a good mood. I would definitely recommend!!! read more

Had a really fun time at this past paint nite at Vin de Syrah on 12/7. It was my first paint nite event and I bought the Living Social deal which is a good deal for the event. I don't think I would go and pay full price of $45/ticket. I am not an artist by any means and just like to do events like this for fun.
